Tic Tac Toe
The painting in the middle looks like it's by Mondriaan, but it's a fake. I designed it myself. If you take a closer look at my design, you might recognize it as a finished game of Tic Tac Toe. I can go into great detail about what this all means, but to be short it's just my crummy way of trying to be funny. You can laugh now or not.

The Mona Lisa Curse
In this film art critic Hughes traces the rise of the commercial art market back to 1963, when Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous portrait was exhibited in New York. The Mona Lisa, says Hughes, was treated 'as thought it were a film star. People came not to look at it, but to say that they’d seen it.' He then goes on explaining why high prices being paid for contemporary art has to do with promotion and publicity and not with the quality of the works themselves.
I don't necessarily agree with all Hughes had to say, but I found the movie very interesting. Judge for yourself by watching part 1 of 12 below.

The Attraction is one of my paintings in the book Famous Frisians in America. It shows ground zero only a couple of years after 9/11. I was stunned how people turned it into a tourist attraction, people were smiling and taking pictures. On my painting you see a couple making a movie for friends back home. It's hard to see on the image, but the dark spot above shows the names of people killed during the attacks. It hangs as a dark cloud above my figures.

The Auction - Painting Of Art Auction At Christie's
Instead of showing the actual painting being auctioned you now see the lot number with conversions to other valuta in the background. Painting all those letters and numbers was quite hard to do I might add, it made me dizzy from time to time! The image shows them a little bit crooked, I haven't got a clue why, but believe me they're straighter than 6'o clock.
I like that the action takes place outside the painting, we cannot see who's actually bidding, we only see the auctioneer and some audience members looking at something outside the painting. The dramatic lighting really adds to this mystery.
If you take a closer look though, you'll probably notice that something is off. I'm going to be a tease right now not telling you what it is! But, if you're the first who guesses it right, I'll give you a free signed postcard with a painting of mine on it. Feel free to post your guesses in the comments!

The Art Bubble - Painting Of Art Auction Sotheby's
Record prices are being paid for contemporary art everywhere and some people say this is a bubble about to burst if it hasn't already. On my painting you see this bubble quite literally, the auctioned painting is one of a young girl blowing bubbles. Then again, the painting is well executed, so why shouldn't it fetch a high price?

In other news I had a blast at the recent opening of my solo show at Artemisia. Peter de Haan, editor of the book Famous Frisians in America had a great talk about my art and even collected comments about my art from all over the world! People from Senegal, China, South Africa, India, America, France and other countries all responded positively to my works which was really flattering. Peter even stressed the fact that somebody should organize an duo-exhibition of me and Edward Hopper. How about that!
In addition to my solo show my works will be represented by Amstel Gallery at the Afordable Art Fair from oct 29 - nov 1 at Gashouder, Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam. For more information about the fair please click here

Killah - painting of shopwindow at night
This past week I painted Killah, a painting showing a shopwindow of a clothing store at night. I thought the name of the store was quite odd, Killah is slang for Killer if I understand American slang correctly. I remember standing in front of the shopwindow wondering about this, when I saw that the dummies were already killed so to speak. They all lost their heads, but at least they still looked nice.
This saturday my solo-show at Artemisia will open. Today we decorated the gallery and it really turned out great. A sneak preview of the show can be seen on the website of Artemisia. The show will be opened this saturday at 16.00 h (4 pm) by Peter de Haan, editor of the book Famous Frisians in America. I'm looking forward to the show and I hope to greet you as my guest!

Famous Frisian in America and Obama Superman
The presentation began with a nice breakfast, followed by a word of welcome by the commisioner of the Queen. After that a couple of speakers took center stage giving a lot of background info on a selection of people in the book. Very interesting to listen to. It was quite crowded too, over 100 people attended. During the presentation images were projected on a large screen, including some of my paintings! Later I spoke to the author and I got my own copy. The book is not only published in Dutch, but in English as well. On 12 september the first copy of the English version will be presented to topmodel Doutzen Kroes on Governor's Island in New York during the Hudson 400 festivities. More info on the book can be found here
In the spirit of today I give you Obama Superman. I had this idea for a while and just now finished it. At first I didn't want to publish it, because it's so out of character, but then again I couldn't think of a painting more appropriate for today then this one!

The Writer
At the same time it was an excellent occasion for me to finally create something with an artist friend of mine Klaas Lageweg. He's greatly influenced by graffiti and we've been talking about creating something together for a while now. Never really got around in actually doing so, but we finally did so now.
Since I was really rusty whith the spraycan we decided to go for a design by Klaas. While working I thought the commisioned door was also a perfect theme for a daily. On todays painting you see Klaas working on the door we did together. It turned out quite colorful! The second picture shows the finished door.

Adonis holding his spear is ready to leave his beloved Venus to be off to the hunt. Venus, the goddess of love, touches his shoulder, imploring him not to go. My attendant is guarding this scene and in doing so he's the guardian of love as well.
For now I'm going to keep up the painting a week method I seem to have developed these last couple of weeks. Not sure if that's wise financially, but I'm having way too much fun painting these scenes. Have a great weekend!

Slow Traffic
Petra of Amstel Gallery told me on the phone she had a special location arranged for this show, not that far from the gallery itself. At first I didn't thought much of it, but when I walked in it really blew me away! The space is truly amazing and the art is well, just topnotch! It kind of reminded me of the large galleries you see in New York.
A huge crowd showed up when the show was about to open. Manuela Kemp did an excellent job opening it. I enjoyed talking to everybody and we ended a perfect evening with a couple of sales. The show still runs untill the end of this week. If you have a change to visit the show please don't hesitate to do so. I never say this, but this one truly is a must see!
In other news in september I got a show coming up in New York. At this point I cannot tell you much about it, but it's going to be really special. Todays painting Slow Traffic is going to be part of it. It's the larger sized version of a daily painting I did a while ago. I take the rest of the week to paint another larger sized painting, also for the NY show. With a bit of luck I can finish this one friday.

It's museum-weekend, which means a lot of museums in the Netherlands are open for free this saturday and sunday. Today I went to the museum of my relative Jopie Huisman with my father and mother. Walking through the museum brought back a lot of memories to my dad. I heard stories I haven't heard before. It's also very strange that so many visitors come to see the portraits by Jopie of my great grandfather and mother. It makes me very proud and I think there are a couple of paintings coming up situated at the Jopie Huisman Museum.
