And were back in NYC. You got to love how my figures have chosen their seats. Both sitting at the far end leaving a colorful red/orange gap in the center. Just perfect for a painting!

How I love to paint scenes of the New York subway. I'm attracted to the colors and all the reflections which seem to pop up everywhere. But most of all I'm interested in the people riding the subway.

They all have their own story to tell and it shows on their faces. Hardly anybody talks though, they all retire within their own minds and I can help but wonder what they're thinking about.

This painting makes want to visit New York again soon, maybe I will!

Subway Seats

I've been painting a lot of larger scaled paintings these last couple of weeks and I felt like doing a smaller one for change. The painting shows one of my favourite subjects: the subway of New York. You see 2 seats of the car and through the open door you have a direct view of what's going on on the platform.

Subway Platform

It's completed! Today I made the last much needed adjustments to Subway Platform and now I'm completely satisfied with it. The middle part between the train and the tiles was still a little tricky, but I blended it all together by putting a transparant layer of reddish black. It works well. Tomorrow I will post a smaller sized painting as you're used from me!

Subway Platform

Todays painting may look a bit grimy, but that just how it is at places in the New York underground. Of course that's also something that made me paint this one in the first place. I love the dark and grey colours against the white, they make a lovely contrast.

Yesterday I talked about the financial crisis and how the bank that holds my savings has gone bankrupt. Last night our minister of finances assured that everybody gets his money back. That's something, but I'm afraid it's going to be a long wait. The Financial Newspaper in Holland is going to publish a picture of The Show this monday. Have a great weekend!

Lexington Ave

I had so much fun painting the subways scenes again that I couldn't resist the temptation to paint another one. This one was a little tricky, because of the amount of detail involved. I'm particular fond of the shiny floor, although the picture really doesn't do it any justice. You just have to take my word for it I guess. Anyway I hope you enjoy this painting as much as I did painting it!

In other news an article about the studio complex I work in appeared in the Leeuwarder Courant this week. I haven't read it myself yet, but I know it's accompied with a nice picture of me working on yesterdays painting The Call. As soon as I get my hands on a copy of it I let you know!

23rd Street

This is one of the stations I traveled to from yesterdays subway station. Of course there were others as well, but this one caught my eye because of the arrangement of the people. The view from the platform across trough all the black beams make the scene complete for me.

Besides my daily painting I just completed a larger size one as well today. Well that is to say I think I did. I'm going to do the overnight test, you know let it rest for a while and then see if there's any adjusting to do. It's a great scene with children, but you see that soon enough!

Carriage

I woke up kind of sleepy this morning. That's because I had a long day yesterday, I worked untill midnight. Besides painting I'm busy making a book of my blogpaintings. The book has 40 pages and about 50 full colour images. The measurements are 8.3" x 8.3" or 21 x 21 cm complete with hardcover. The book will be published by myself and at first for my own enjoyment. If the results are good I'm thinking about making more. Of course I'm very excited about this and cannot wait to see it!

I'm also very excited about todays painting of a subway carriage. Usually the carriages are loaded with people, but here there's nobody insight. You can feel the presence of humans however and it could be soon before the carriage is loaded with people again.

The Doors

The subway is one of my favourite things to paint, especially the one in New York. On my painting you see the train about to close its doors and ready to leave. If you look closely you can see a couple of people standing in the train. I wish you could see it in real life, the painting has many subtle brushwork, which you somehow cannot see now. I really enjoyed painting this one and I sure do hope you share my enthousiasm!

In other news, I'm going away this friday for a short springbreak. Me and my girlfriend are going to spend some time in Hamburg, Germany. Besides that there are a lot of festivities coming up here, including my dad's birthday. If you have been following my blog you know what that means. So no paintings next week, but untill friday I am painting as usual!

The Underground

One thing that attracts me about the subway is that is a completely different world beneath the busy streets of a large city. Usually the subway is just as busy, but on my painting you see one man taking a ride in the metro of New York. I really like painting these scenes, the lighting and the whole atmosphere really appeals to me. I hope you enjoy this painting as much as I did painting it!

The Subway

After the cab disaster in New York I took the subway instead. Way easier and besides that more inspirational for me as a painter. I forgot which line this was, but judging by the arrangement of the seats I'm guessing it's the one from Manhattan to Brooklyn. Correct when I'm wrong. Have a great weekend!

The Exit

I don't know what it is, but I always love to paint people in public spaces. This time I went for a scene in the New York subway, 57 street to be exact. Two people are waiting for their train to show up. I had great fun with the contrast between the reds and the greens which I feel work really well here.

The Book

As you might have noticed I started to paint on slightly larger scale as well, 30,6 x 35 cm or 13.8" x 12". I really love this size, because it allows me to paint just a little more detail. Todays painting is on this new size and shows a woman reading while riding the subway of New York. She's completely taken by her book and doesn't seem to notice her surroundings at all. It makes you wonder what the book is about and what wonderful story unfolds in her mind.

The Subway

Thank you all for all your nice comments on the cover of the Leeuwarder Courant! As promised here's todays painting!

While I was in New York for my show in Soho I often took the subway to get around town. While waiting for my own train I saw this scene right in front of me. The train is about to close its doors and is almost ready to leave. People are getting aboard in the nick of time and as always the train is crowded. It always intriques me when people are put together in places with other people they don’t know. I often wonder what they're thinking of, especially the Asian woman in the middle.

Due to the holidays this is the only painting I'm putting online this week. I'll be back next week. Merry Christmas and a happy newyear!
