Measuring 30 x 30 cm, this work depicts a man entirely immersed in Monkey Detonator (often referred to as Detonating Monkey), a creation by the anonymous street artist-provocateur Banksy.

Known for his sharp socio-political undercurrents and irreverent wit, Banksy’s iconic artwork depicts a cheerful chimpanzee mid-leap, hands grasped around a TNT plunger moments away from triggering an explosion.

The viewer doesn't back down, but stands fixed before the canvas, presenting a striking contrast between the ticking tension of the explosive image and the serene, frozen stillness of human contemplation.

For me, the title Bridge takes on a literal visual meaning through a hidden detail. Noland used yellow and blue across his piece. If you mix those colors you get green, the color of the shirt of my viewer. His presence acts as a physical and symbolic bridge—linking the human world directly to the canvas on the wall or, in art terms, linking realism to abstract painting.

The woman on my painting is totally immersed in Banksy’s Queen Ziggy (or Lizzy Stardust). It features Queen Elizabeth II in black and white wearing her crown and pearls, with David Bowie’s iconic red and blue Ziggy Stardust lightning bolt painted across her face.

The artwork merges two titans of British culture who represent opposite worlds—the rigid, traditional power of the royal establishment and the fluid, rebellious, counter-culture energy of glam rock. My figure represents the common folk, you could say.

Some viewers view the piece as a playful, celebratory nod to the Queen, turning the monarch into a pop-art icon. Others interpret it as a subtle critique or satirical jab, questioning the outdated nature of the monarchy and how society blindly idolizes famous figures. Personally, I see it as a way to show that underneath all the fame, rebellion, and status, we're all just human.

One quiet evening at home, I was unwinding in front of the television when I stumbled upon Lingo, a classic game show where two teams try to guess a word within 5 turns. This painting captures Team 1, featuring candidates Maarten and Wessel, as they attempt to solve a 5-letter word starting with the letter "P."

I felt inspired to freeze this fleeting moment of television broadcasting and preserve it through the slow, deliberate medium of painting. By transferring a fleeting TV reality into a permanent painted reality, a lighthearted game show transforms into a profound space for quiet observation.

The scene brought to mind the poignant words of social critic Neil Postman, who once warned that "a culture fully dedicated to entertainment becomes a trivial culture," and added that "the problem isn't that we're laughing instead of thinking, but that we don't know what we're laughing about and why we stopped thinking."

Through this lens, I view the painting as a quiet warning against the dangers of excessive entertainment, which risks reducing society to passivity and detachment. It serves as a reminder to cherish our shared moments of joy, while quietly inviting us to look a little deeper at the modern media that shapes our everyday lives.

I painted it twenty years ago, after watching the news one evening and wondering what I was actually looking at.

I decided to take a photo of my television screen (one of those TVs with a bulky back) to freeze time and use it as a starting point for a painting.

As it turned out what I was watching was a candy-colored setting with a big ol' tank in it.

In Luchtalarm, I depart from my signature, quiet museum interiors to present a minimalist modern still life. The composition is deceptively simple: a mechanical air raid siren cutting sharply into a brilliant, cloudless blue sky.

The primary symbolic tension in Luchtalarm lies in its forced duality. To me, the serene blue sky represents peace, freedom, and the calmness of everyday life, while the siren is a symbol of latent vulnerability—a reminder of how quickly peace can be shattered by geopolitical instability, climate catastrophes, or modern conflict.

The painting operates much like Schrödinger's cat; it is simultaneously calm and anxious. Because we cannot see sound, the siren might actually be blaring right now, trapping the viewer in that tense space of not knowing which one it is.

The man on my painting is enjoying a painting by Fernand Léger. His Divers (or Les Plongeurs) is a celebrated series of paintings and drawings initiated in the 1940s that depicts entangled human bodies in mid-motion.

The initial inspiration came to Léger in 1940 when watching divers in Marseille and, later, a crowded swimming pool in the United States.

The chaotic, tangled mass of limbs was his way of capturing the aggressive speed, motion, and overwhelming sensory experience of modern life.
