The Biblical story of the Tower of Babel serves as a cautionary tale about human pride, disobedience, and the pursuit of self-glory. Humanity, speaking one language, tried to build a tower to heaven to make a name for themselves, but God confused their speech so they couldn't understand each other. I see this painting of a 5G tower as somewhat of a modern version of the Tower of Babel.

My first larger scaled still life painting of this year shows a bookshelf filled with books on art, most notably of course the book with Picasso's portrait on it. It's a variation of my art within art theme.

The painting invites you to fantasize about the content of the books, but to me personally I love the fact that different mediums are at play all at once. There's books of course, but also photography and portraiture. Then again none of them are real as they're all painted. As Picasso would have liked it I guess.

This is especially made clear when the museum piece has people in it, like todays painting. A giant leap between then and now.

The painting shows a clothing store where 2 ladies are looking to buy some new killer outfit. I had great fun painting all those different shades of reds and yellows. The colors also give the painting such a warm feeling.

It took me some weeks to complete, but here it is: my painting of workers taking telephone bids at an art auction at Christie's. You might recognize some figures from previous daily paintings. The painting being auctioned is of course by Rothko. It actually is an image of it projected against the wall. I like how it towers above the workers of Christie's. To me it symbolizes that art is above money. The art business is about art first!

Tic Tac Toe

This looks like an ordinary museum scene with a couple of Mondriaan paintings, but actually I made up the entire scene. The museum doesn't exist and the Mondriaans cannot be seen together. Victory Boogie Woogie, the painting on the right hangs in the Netherlands while the one on the left can be seen in London.

The painting in the middle looks like it's by Mondriaan, but it's a fake. I designed it myself. If you take a closer look at my design, you might recognize it as a finished game of Tic Tac Toe. I can go into great detail about what this all means, but to be short it's just my crummy way of trying to be funny. You can laugh now or not.

Cartman - painting of glass

Last year I painted a still life of a glass showing Kenny of Southpark and now I felt like making one with Cartman. His catchfrase 'I'm not fat, I'm big boned' is right beneath his feet. The funny thing about painting cartoons this way is that all of a sudden they become realistic, I kind of like this strange contrast.

Bakery - painting of couple at bakery on central station Amsterdam

On todays painting you see a couple looking for some nice treat at a bakery on central station in Amsterdam. I always love to paint those shops down at the station, the colors are usually stunning with all the glass and steel going on. Quite an unnatural environment, still the couple on my painting don't mind at all, they're just thinking about the joy of sharing something sweet together.

The Ikea - Man looking for 'art' at Ikea store 6" x 6"

A man is looking for some 'art' at the Ikea-store. Of course the art he's looking at isn't real art, they're just prints on canvas not even limited in edition. Thousands of the same image are in circulation and many have them in their homes. To be honest with you I cannot stand these type of images. Ah well, what can you do about it? Not much, but I sure can make a painting of just that and that's what I did. Hope you enjoy it!

Abstract

A while ago I visited a mall in my hometown and when I went up with an escalator I saw this scene. With all the architecture and many lines going on the whole scene seems to be abstract. In fact it's not, what else could you expect from a realist painter, if you look closely you see a woman in the center of the painting looking at clothes.

The New Religion

During my visit to Amsterdam I took the escalator in the Magna Plaze Mall. While looking down I saw this lady admiring a red dress in a shop-window. The dummy is bathing in light and the whole scene reminded me of statues you see in churches. Perhaps the woman is even saying prayer to get her husband buying her that dress, finally!

Oddment - The Avero Tower

I love to take a walk at night after a hard day of work.
On one of my walks I saw this big giant rising up against
the skyline in my hometown Leeuwarden. Of course I saw
the Avero Tower before, you have to be blind not to see it.
In fact on a clear day the whole province can actually see it,
but I never saw it in this light. I'm usually not a landscape
painter, but this view I couldn't resist. I just love the
lights and the reflections in the water. For people who have
been to my hometown, the view is taking from across the park
Prinsentuin near the statue of Us Mem. It's the first oddment
painting on this blog and I hope you enjoy it as much as I
did painting it. Have a nice weekend!
