Get Together woman enjoying a work of art in the Kunsthalle, Hamburg
G. Boersma acrylics on masonite 6" x 6" or 15 x 15 cm 2011 SOLD
One thing I definitely like about painting museum scenes is the fact that time doesn't seem to exist. What I mean is that past and present come together in just one painting. This is especially made clear when the museum piece has people in it, like todays painting. A giant leap between then and now.

Front Row woman admiring The Vintage Festival by Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema
G. Boersma acrylics on masonite 6" x 6" or 15 x 15 cm 2011 SOLD
From pop art back to Victorian Age painting. The woman on my painting is admiring The Vintage Festival by Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema.
Alma Tadema was born in a small village near my hometown Leeuwarden. At a young age he lived here too, later in his life he became one of the highest paid artists in England. After his death in 1912 he was soon forgotten, but there's something of a revival going on. Last year one of his painting sold at Sotheby's for about 34 million dollars. That's saying something!

In the Hamburger Kunsthalle I saw this guy trying to make a drawing of the lovely paintings displayed by Felix Valloton. There actually was a whole class scattered over the exhibition making drawings, but this guy caught my eye because of his red shirt against the red in the painting. It works quite well.
Have a great weekend!

You might be wondering why todays painting is entitled 'Alligator'. Well, if you look closely on the painting the woman is looking at you see a naked man fighting of an alligator, while an young lady is looking at the scene. This lovely painting is by Felix Vallotton as seen in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg. Today I also got some very good news! I cannot say much about it for now, I wish I could, but it has something to do with an artfair and believe me it's huge! More info soon! kind regards, Gerard Boersma Alligator G. While painting Sideways I thought it would be a great idea to zoom out more and show you more of the room in the museum. I don't know all the artists of the paintings, but I know the one behind the lady is by Alma Tadema. The scene is situated at the Kunsthalle in Hamburg. kind regards, Gerard Boersma Salon G. I really have a lot of inspiration in making these paintings of people looking at art lately. On my painting you see a lady looking the other way while it looks like the young girl on the painting is trying to grab her attention. I thought it was a great motif for todays painting. kind regards, Gerard Boersma Attention G. Boersma acrylics on masonite 6" x 6", 15 x 15 cm 2008 SOLD

With the heavy subject matter of yesterdays painting, I felt like doing a lighter one for todays. On the painting you see an older woman looking at a painting by impressionist Corinth in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg. On Corinths painting you see a young woman brushing her hair, while a man is standing behind her watching. The young woman on the painting will stay like this forever, while the woman looking at her is getting older by the minute with all the difficulties that come with age, as the cain clearly shows. Still she's enjoying herself and simple has a good time! If you would like to have this blog painting just click on the link beneath the painting to place your bid. The auction only lasts for 10 days and you can expect the painting within a week to 10 days after the auction ends. kind regards, Gerard Boersma Youth G. This may come as a surprise to you, but even though I'm a realist I'm still a huge fan of expressionism. I love the loose brushstrokes, the intense colours and well, just the way those artist express themselves. I could never paint like that, it just doesn't feel right to do myself. Anyway, the woman on my painting is looking at a painting by Kirchner in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg.

Not only has the Kunsthalle in Hamburg an impressive selection of modern art, they also have a lot of art from the middle ages. Usually I'm not really attracted to those type of paintings, but the panels on my painting caught my attention. The large panels were standing on bars and you can actually walk around them. At first I thought they were painted on both sides, but that wasn't the case. I found it kind of interesting to see the back of the panels, but front wasn't bad to look at either, haha. Anyway, I sure hope you enjoy this little gem! New paintings are up for auction on ebay. Starting bids are low, so make sure you don't miss it. While painting todays painting I thought the horses could storm at me any minute from now, that's why I entitled this piece The Storm. If those horses were real I sure wouldn't want to stand where this lovely lady on my painting stands. The painting she's looking at is by Renoir and is called 'A Morning Ride in the Bois de Boulogne'. You can see it in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg. kind regards, Gerard Boersma The Storm G. I've been busy painting still lifes these last few days, but as I said I didn't give up painting humans at all as todays painting clealry demonstrates. I love how the figures are sitting/ standing in a circle. They connected to each other, but are still enjoying art in their own way. The lovely painting on the back is by Felix Vallotton as seen in the Hamburger Kunsthalle. In other news my birthday is coming up this friday and I got a special action in the decks! More details will follow this week, so hold tight! kind regards, Gerard Boersma The Circle G. Boersma acrylics on masonite 9.9" x 8.7", 25,2 x 22 cm 2008

While I visited the Kunsthalle in Hamburg a while ago there was some kind of art class going on. The woman on my painting participated in this class and is trying to copy a painting by Felix Vallotton. This painting The Abduction of Europe has a mythological theme. The naked lady is Europe who's been seduced by Zeus transformed into a bull. As the story goes he dragged Europe into the sea and brought her to Crete where she became the first queen of that island. Ultimately the whole continent got named after her. I don't know if the woman on my painting finished her version of the painting, but of course I did so. I love the blue and purple colours, it makes the painting by Vallotton really pop out. kind regards, Gerard Boersma The Bull G. Boersma acrylics on masonite 9.9" x 8.7", 25,2 x 22 cm 2008

If you have been following my blog you might remember my painting called 'Nude'. On this piece a woman was looking at a painting by Felix Vallotton in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg. I promised you a little series about this relatively unknown painter and today I finally live up to that promise. The unusual panel size follows the unusual hanging of the painting, but it works quite well! kind regards, Gerard Boersma Up High G. Boersma acrylics on masonite 9" x 6.1", 23 x 15,5 cm 2008 SOLD

Today an article about me appeared in Zakenspiegel, a prestigious magazine for business people in my region. Of course I'm very pleased with this as you can imagine! I haven't seen the article yet myself, but I heard it's spread over two pages, complete with pictures. Cannot wait to see it! The article is written by Anne Feddema, a fellow artist from my hometown Leeuwarden whom I greatly respect. When Anne saw my blogpaintings of people in museums he immediately commisioned me to paint todays painting. This piece is one of my most surrealist works up to date. You see the wanderer from the painting by Casper David Friedrich looking at his own painting. I thought the effect of this is quite funny, I sure hope you agree! kind regards, Gerard Boersma Wanderer for his Painting G. Boersma acrylics on masonite 6" x 6", 15 x 15 cm 2008

When I said yesterday that I have a lot of small paintings waiting to be painted in a larger sized version I didn't mean that I don't have other subjects to paint as well. Todays painting 'The Statue' is an example of this. The woman on the painting is looking at a fabulous painting by Renoir in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg. This painting will be part of my show in the Amstelkerk in Amsterdam. The show opens tomorrow at 17:00h and of course you're cordially invited to come!

I'm glad I told you guys last friday that at this point I'm focussing more on my larger sized paintings and temporarily not have to deal with the pressure of finishing a painting daily, because since this weekend I quit smoking. Things are going well, haven't touched one sigarette since, but at times everything just flashes in front of my eyes and I'm having trouble concentrating. Then I know it's time for one my very tasty nicotine chewing gums, which helps a bit. I hope todays painting and the paintings ahead don't look too shaky. Please forgive me if they do, but I defenitely want to kick my nasty habit to the curb once and for all! kind regards, Gerard Boersma The Bridge G. When mister Klemm from New York saw my daily painting The Icon he immediately asked me if I could paint a larger sized version of it. I changed the composition a bit showing more of the great portraits of Marilyn Monroe by Warhol. I'm very satisfied with the results as is mister Klemm and I just wanted to share it with you. Right opposite of the Kunsthalle I saw this lady enjoying the view. That day a marathon was going on and all the runners were just passing by below. Can you imagine people running 42 kilometres just for fun? That's quite an achievement and I got great respect for that. I tried running myself once after quitting playing soccer. That was not a succes, I immediately thought: 'Why am I doing this again?' So I soon quite sports alltogether and got serious about painting. That's quite an achievement too, isn't it?

In the Kunsthalle in Hamburg I visited an exhibition showing the works of Felix Vallotton. I hadn't heard of him before I must admit, but that guy sure can paint! This French painter was closely associated with the Nabis group, which also included artists like Pierre Bonnard and Eduard Vuilard amongst others. In his day and age, late 19th and early 20th century, his painting were thought of as highly provocatve, because of the many nudes and unsettling way of how he painted them. His paintings seem cool and controlled, leaving out details which makes his art so unsettling. I will make a little series of this great painter, starting of with todays painting 'Nude". kind regards, Gerard Boersma Nude G. Boersma acrylics on masonite 6" x 6", 15 x 15 cm 2008
