Katz By Katz G. Boersma SOLD Katz was one of the first artists to return to figurative painting following Abstract art’s dominance at midcentury. Katz’s simplification of forms and elimination of detail relates to hard-edged Color-Field painting and to Pop Art’s emulation of commercial graphics—two early 1960s styles that influenced him. Katz began concentrating on casual portraiture of family and friends in the late 1950s. Self-portraits appear periodically throughout his career. Never one to dwell on inner psychology, I wonder what my figure makes of this self portrait. Op Art G. Boersma SOLD Victor Vasarely was a French-Hungarian artist credited as the father of the Op Art movement, short for Optical Art. Utilizing geometric shapes and colorful graphics, the artist created compelling illusions of spatial depth, as seen in this work my figure is enjoying in a museum. Although I'm happy with the results, painting this small study was quite a drag. The checker board kept on dancing before my eyes and I had to take regular breaks and rub my eyes for a minute. Hunters In The Snow G. Boersma My figure is enjoying Hunters In The Snow by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The painting from 1565 shows a wintry scene in which three hunters are returning from an expedition accompanied by their dogs. This Northern Renaissance work is one of a series of works, five of which still survive, that depict different times of the year. The overall visual impression is one of a calm, cold, overcast day; the colors are muted whites and grays, the trees are bare of leaves, and wood smoke hangs in the air. Several adults and a child prepare food at an inn with an outside fire. Of interest are the jagged mountain peaks which do not exist in Belgium or Holland. Black Hat G. Boersma SOLD The woman on my small study is enjoying a painting from Alex Katz’s 'Black Hat' series. Katz is known for his images that are typically flat in color and form and for his depictions of daily life and leisure. I like the differences and similarities between Katz's sitter and my own. The figure by Katz is shielded by a black hat and sunglasses. Mine doesn't wear anything like that, but she isn't revealing herself either. I like this layer of detachment together with the depiction of daily life and leisure.
