One day in 2004 I went to visit Amsterdam with my good friend Erik. As I didn't have a car nor a driver license back then we took the train. I believe we went to an opening of one of my shows, but I'm not sure. I remember taking a photograph which I later used as a starting point for this painting.

Later in 2005 Omrop Fryslan aired a short documentary of about 25 minutes about my show in New York. Featured in it was this painting.

A neighbor of my parents ran into my mom and dad the day after and mentioned how much he enjoyed the documentary and my work. He especially liked that painting of a no good bum riding the train.

He meant of course my friend Erik. I don't know what made him think that, but the four day old beard or so might have something to do with it. That no good bum is now the proud owner of this painting.

Still later knowing that my folks didn't subscribe to a particular newspaper another neighbor dropped a newspaper clipping about my work in my parents mailbox. I thought that was so kind. Stuff like that makes me really miss my old hometown Makkum.

kind regards, Gerard

Night Train

Something completely different than Obama, but more up my alley I guess. One evening I took a stroll down to the trainstation here in Leeuwarden. I saw a train ready to departure with a beautiful view trhough the windows of the car. Just had to paint that!

Graffiti Train

Todays painting is the larger sized version of my daily painting Graffiti Train I did a while ago. The painting shows a woman waiting for her train at the central station of Zwolle. In the background you see a train covered with graffiti. Being an artist I always like to see trains like that. Imagine one of my artworks up there riding cross country through the Netherlands, that sure would be something!

It seems I'm getting back into my larger sized painting modus. I don't know why, but somehow it just feels good to do right now. I'm close to finishing a new one soon any day now!

Central Station - painting of central station at night

I still travel by train every now and then. Recently I came back late at night from a trip to Groningen. Usually the central station is quite busy, but at night there's hardly anyone. It makes the place look a little bit eerie, but still comfortable to me, because I was almost home. Todays painting gives a good sense of what I felt when I stepped out of the train.

The opening last saturday of the show Nieuwe Uitleenschatten in Groningen was huge succes. Although it was really warm that day a lot, and I mean a lot, of people showed up. The show itself was a pleasure to visit, great selection of work by great artists. If you haven't seen the show yet, you can do so until aug 28.

kind regards, Gerard Boersma

Graffiti Train

Not a lot of people know this, but I used to be a graffiti artist. Well, only did legal walls of course. If I spraypainted something illegal in the village I grew up in, the only cop there knew exactly who to turn to, so that was out of the question. Soon I moved on from graffiti to realistic painting, because I felt I could express myself way better that way. But whenever I see something related to graffiti it always grabs my attention as is the case with todays painting. The woman just happened to stand in the way;)

kind regards, Gerard

ps my shoulder is still stiff, but is doing way better than yesterday luckily!

Hokuto Express

I've been mad busy cleaning out my old studio. Today I moved all my paintings to my new studio, which was quite some work. I still found the time to paint this view of a Japanese train with two of their employees. The woman is writing down something while the man is looking at something we cannot see. I had great fun with the lighting. The scene is taking from a ride of the Hokuto Express. Many thanks goes to Photopass Japan

The Platform

I just recently got my driving license, but I still find myself riding the train quite often. Old habits are hard to kill I guess. One night I arrived in my hometown very late. This was after the grand opening of my show at ICO, centre for art and culture in Assen. It took me almost 3 hours to get home and I was feeling kind of tired and sleepy, but at the same I was pleased about how the show went. I finally stepped out, looked back and saw this beautiful view of the train I was just in. Right there and then I decided to paint it and I'm pretty satisfied about the results!
