I decided to call my extremely tiny paintings oddments again like I used to in the very beginning of my blogging days. These paintings are about 2.3" x 2.8" or 6 x 7.3 cm in size and usually done on left over pieces from larger sized panels.

Todays oddment shows a close up of a woman enjoying Vincent Van Gogh's Wheatfield With Crows. Rumor has it that this is the last piece painted by Van Gogh right before he went insane and committed suicide. This isn't true according to art historians, but I can clearly see why people like to think so.

Wheatfield With Crows really is an eery painting with the vibrant darkblue sky and the crows flying directly towards you. It might not be the final painting done by Van Gogh, but is sure is symbolic for the nearing end. It definitely is my favourite piece by him!

My larger sized painting I keep talking about is finally completed after more than 2 months of hard labour. I'm now thinking about how to present this work the best way I can.

Although I spent most of my time working on my larger sized painting I did find time to paint this scene from the Vincent van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam as well. The woman is looking at Van Gogh's worldfamous Sunflowers. It looks like the girl is alone, but you can tell by the shadows on the wall there's actually quite a crowd behind her, you as an observer are one of them. I like the fact that the shadows look like a vase themself.

Today I also bought my largest panels in a very long time. As a matter of fact one is just a monster and will be the largest painting I've ever done once finished. Its measurements are a whooping 41.2 x 54.6" or 104,7 x 138,8 cm. I was flipping through a book about Hopper when I suddenly got inspired to paint big, really big.

It was kind of tricky getting the panels back to my studio in one piece on my bicycle. Yeah I know, why not take my car instead, but I was afraid it wouldn't fit. Luckily one of the employees at the store helped getting the panels safely packaged on one of my pedals. Quite a ride I can tell you.

Anyway, I already have some idea for the painting and I cannot wait to get started. If you're an artist yourself you know about that tingly feeling you get before starting a new work. But first I want to finish that other large painting and let's not forget about my dailies as well!

Art Bookshelf

Today I completed the large still life painting I spoke about yesterday. On the painting you see a couple of art books as seen in a local bookstore, easy recognizable are Botticelli's Birth of Venus and a selfportrait by Van Gogh. I spend the latter of last week painting it.

I didn't think it would be that hard to complete, but boy did I forget how difficult it is to get the lettering straight. It really takes a lot of concentration, especially when the books are the same, as in the upper right corner. If you wonder where I signed the painting, well take a good look at the 3 books in the center below. That's right, I signed it 3 times:)

The Admirers 3

If you have been following my blog lately you know that I'm currently working on larger sized paintings. I got so much smaller paintings which are screaming for a larger sized version and I feel the need to address to that for the time being. The Admirers is one of them. It actually is a commisioned painting by a collector of mine from California. The figures are looking at a painting by Van Gogh in the Van Gogh Musuem in Amsterdam.

The Crows

No strange things happening in my studio today, but I do got this great museum scene with one of the eeriest paintings by Van Gogh. 'Wheatfield with Crows' is my personal favourite and probably the one most subject to speculation. It was executed in July 1890, in the last weeks of Van Gogh’s life. To me the dramatic, cloudy sky filled with crows and the cut-off path symbolizes his psyche at the time. You could see them as signs of his coming end and many claimed it was his last painting. However there's no real proof for it. Fortunately my figures are in a completely differtent state of mind and are simply enjoying themselves!

The Museum

I could easily get addicted to making these paintings about people in museums. They're so much fun to do! First of all it's great to paint people who are looking at something beautiful and if I did a good job later on people in real life are doing exactly the same thing. Also the lighting in museums is just magnificant and I get to copy some of the greatest artists ever lived, which makes me a better painter I believe.

Todays painting is taken from a visit to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. The people are looking at a painting by Millais. Friends from Amsterdam bought it on the spot alongside The Generations, but I defenitely wanted to share it with you all. More to come!
