and age is quite interesting.
The double-portrait I promised to put online is coming soon, probably tomorrow!

31.3.08The Dance
In the Van Gogh Museum I saw this man watching a painting by Millais. I'm not sure if you can see it, but on the Millais' painting people are dancing. I thought the contrast between the dancing people against the individual entertainment of our day
and age is quite interesting. The double-portrait I promised to put online is coming soon, probably tomorrow! kind regards, Gerard Boersma
30.3.08The Exit
I don't know what it is, but I always love to paint people in public spaces. This time I went for a scene in the New York subway, 57 street to be exact. Two people are waiting for their train to show up. I had great fun with the contrast between the reds and the greens which I feel work really well here.

29.3.08The Sunflowers
Just because it is saturday I got a larger sized painting for you. As you can see it is from my series of paintings about people in museums. The two man are looking at the famous painting 'Sunflowers' by Van Gogh. Of course this painting belongs to the permanent collection of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. As a painter I cannot get enough of these museum scenes, they're so much fun to do. I hope you share my enthousiasm!
kind regards, Gerard Boersma
28.3.08Bestsellers
Recently I heard a writer say on television that reading is a good thing, because it allows you to see things from another persons perspective. I can only agree with this point of view and I'm sure the woman on my painting does as well.
In cooperation with gallery Van Den Berg 4 of my paintings will be shown at the SG company in Emmen. More info soon! kind regards, Gerard Boersma
27.3.08The Crows
No strange things happening in my studio today, but I do got this great museum scene with one of the eeriest paintings by Van Gogh. 'Wheatfield with Crows' is my personal favourite and probably the one most subject to speculation. It was executed in July 1890, in the last weeks of Van Gogh’s life. To me the dramatic, cloudy sky filled with crows and the cut-off path symbolizes his psyche at the time. You could see them as signs of his coming end and many claimed it was his last painting. However there's no real proof for it. Fortunately my figures are in a completely differtent state of mind and are simply enjoying themselves!

26.3.08The Studio
Yesterdays radio interview at Omrop Fryslan inspired me for todays painting. You see host Annelies van der Goot talking live on the radio. The big mic on the foreground was the one I talked into during the interview.
Talking about studio's, I heard the strangest story about my own studio. My studio in the former militairy hospital stood empty for over one year and I often wondered why. I thought it had something to do with the rent price, but I obviously thought wrong. Today my girlfriend handed me an article published in the Leeuwarder Courant in 2004. In this article artists were interviewed about the studio's. A lot of them had experienced very strange things. Paintings fell spontaneously off the wall, bloodstains appeared and dissappeared just as quickly, footsteps were heard when nobody was there, lights went on and off, just closed windows suddenly stood open again and even a lady was heard singing at the same spot over and over again. It was obvious the artists thought the former militairy hospital was haunted. That's why my studio was empty all this time! Fortunately I haven't experienced any of this yet and I sure hope I don't in the future! kind regards, Gerard Boersma

25.3.08The Reflection
Okay, yesterdays painting ought to show 'Milkmaid' by Vermeer, but you could hardly see it. Today I thought let's use the same painting again, but more visible. I took the liberty to change the background colour into a smooth red, I feel it works well here. I hope you like the results!
This afternoon I was interviewed about my daily paintings on radio Omrop Fryslan. It was a very nice interview and I would like to thank everybody at Omrop Fryslan! kind regards, Gerard Boersma
24.3.08The Observers
I had a nice slow painting day. All because it's Eastern I slept in till late, had a huge breakfast with eggs of course and then went to my studio. I still feel blessed everytime I'm there. Todays scene is taken from a visit to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. It's not allowed in Dutch museums to take pictures, but I sneaked my camera in, dodged the security I managed to take some. I'm glad I did, the museum series are so much fun to make. On the painting you see two figures observing the worldfamous painting 'Milkmaid' by Vermeer. You can hardly see it though, I guess you just have to take my word for it!
kind regards, Gerard Boersma
23.3.08The Ladder
Happy Eastern! I've had about enough eggs for today and decided to paint something that has nothing to do with eastern at all. On the painting you see two fellows standing on a ladder in front of the Holland Casino in Amsterdam. They're not cleaning the windows, but are fixing some problem with the sign.

22.3.08The Bus-Stop
The weather is quite bad over here, lots of rain and wet snow, but at times the sun breaks through. And when it does you get these great scenes like this woman waiting for her bus to show up. I just had to paint it!
I also finished a commissioned double portrait today. I cannot tell you right now by who it was commissioned or which persons I painted. It will spoil the surprise when the couple receive their portraits tomorrow. I cannot wait to hear their reaction and I will put the portrait online as soon as I can! kind regards, Gerard Boersma
21.3.08Together
The figures on my painting are watching the famous painting 'Ophelia' by Millais now on view at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. For those that have never heard of Ophelia, she is a character from Shakespeares play Hamlet. She becomes insane after Hamlet murdered her father and by him leaving her. Ophelia finally kills herself by drowning. Fortunately the people on my painting don't have to go through all of that. They're close together enjoying the painting.
kind regards, Gerard Boersma
20.3.08The Literature
I just started to make a painting a day and I must say I just love to do it. Todays painting is one of my favourite subjects lately, the bookstore. Readers always look so peaceful and at the same time I feel it's really meaningful in some way. Like painting I cannot get enough of it. This time I spotted this lady sitting down for some good reading in one of the local bookstores.
In other news Omrop Fryslan called. This broadcaster will interview me on the radio about my daily paintings this tuesday. If you happen to be in the province Friesland in the Netherlands you can hear it about 11.30h. kind regards, Gerard Boersma

19.3.08The Gym
Last years painting 'Narcissus' of a man working out in the gym inspired me for todays painting. The woman is standing on one of those walking machines. I guess it's hard work trying to look good. I'm not a sportsman myself, but I do like to paint it. It's way easier.

18.3.08The Textmessage
Everywhere you look nowadays you see at least one person holding his or hers mobile phone. In Amsterdam I saw that this man had found a perfect place to send a textmessage, little did he know that he was about to be immortalized. The scene is taken in front of the municipal theatre at the Leidseplein.

17.3.08The Clothing Store, a painting every single day
As I told you recently I just became a new member of the Daily Painters Gallery. Likewise my new studio it really inspires me and I decided to become a real daily painter. This means that from now on I will post a new painting every single day. Yes, every single day, including the weekends!
For starters here's todays painting 'The Clothing Store'. I hope you enjoy the painting as much as I did painting it and I hope to see you again tomorrow! kind regards, Gerard Boersma
15.3.08The Museum
I could easily get addicted to making these paintings about people in museums. They're so much fun to do! First of all it's great to paint people who are looking at something beautiful and if I did a good job later on people in real life are doing exactly the same thing. Also the lighting in museums is just magnificant and I get to copy some of the greatest artists ever lived, which makes me a better painter I believe.
Todays painting is taken from a visit to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. The people are looking at a painting by Millais. Friends from Amsterdam bought it on the spot alongside The Generations, but I defenitely wanted to share it with you all. More to come! kind regards, Gerard Boersma
12.3.08The Generations
Last friday I went to Amsterdam to take some pictures for my paintings. The Generations is the first of a new series of paintings about people in museums. On the painting you see an young woman holding her child. She's looking at some famous paintings by Rembrandt. The scene is taken from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
kind regards, Gerard Boersma
11.3.08The Lecture
After a week of full of painting I decided to treat myself to a new book. I didn't know what to get, but I decided to see what one the local bookstores had to offer. Inside there was this lecture going on by some famous author I didn't seem to recognize, but the audience clung to every word he said. I thought it would be a great motif for todays painting!

8.3.08The Hunt
Yesterday I went to Amsterdam. I visited some museums and I took a lot of pictures for my paintings, so you can expect a new series about Amsterdam soon. The aftermath of me moving into my new studio is finally wearing off and I'm getting back to my normal working schedule. Thank God! Todays painting is selfportrait of me standing in front of an ATM in New York. I hope you enjoy it and I wish you all a good weekend!

5.3.08The Store
I was walking into a store in my hometown when I spotted this lady who was working there. She looked at something I couldn't identify, but the scene stroke me at once. I love the warm tones and the cool color of the computer screen. It is my first painting with the size 5.9" x 5.9" or 15 x 15 cm. and I'm definitely going to make more on this size.
kind regards, Gerard Boersma
3.3.08The Mason
Meet the neighbours! I just moved into my new studio and this mason is my new neighbour. Well temporarely of course. The masons are building some kind of building right in front of my window, I'm not sure what it is, but I believe it is a theatre. Don't feel sorry, it really sounds worse than it is. I still have a nice view of the small river Dokkumer Ee. Of course I couldn't resist the temptation painting my new view and say hello to my new neighbour!
