Detail Milkmaid

I don't know what it is about the Milkmaid by Vermeer, I just love that painting! The lighting, composition, subject matter, it all speaks to me. He was just an amazing painter!

Not to toot my own horn, but I'm quite satisfied with my version as well. It was pretty tricky to get the painting by Vermeer straight, especially since it's so small. It's only about 1- 1.5" or 3-4 cm in length. The head of the Milkmaid is only one fith of an ince or half a centimeter high. So yeah, that's small! You can imagine how great it felt when I actually finished that part. Hope you enjoy this one as well!

kind regards, Gerard

See-Through

I had so much fun painting the Bride I couldn't help to paint another small museum scene. This time a woman is looking at the Love Letter by Vermeer as seen in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Bride - man looking at Jewish Bride by Rembrandt

I was working on a medium sized painting today and I just completed it when I felt like doing a really small one for a change. I haven't made any in a long time. On the painting you a see man looking at the Jewish Bride by Rembrandt, as seen in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. It was quite difficult to get the heads of the figures straight, my panel being so small and all, but I think I pulled it off.

Tomorrow is a big day by the way. I don't really have to do anything, but my paintings will be shipped to Los Angeles for the LA Art Show. Very exciting! I said earlier that 12 paintings are included in the art fair, but we finally settled on 15 larger scaled paintings and 10 smaller ones. Quite a lot!

Dutch Masters

I didn't try the Kentucky Fried Chicken yesterday, but settled for some chicken shoarma instead, way better. Anyway, on todays painting you see an elderly couple studying some Dutch masters in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Besides wearing a round tummy the man is also wearing headphones for the audiotour, in case you were wondering what that thing on his head is.

The Observers Two

If this scene looks familiar to you, you're right. The painting is a second version of my blogpainting The Observers, 15 x 15 cm. Usually when I make another version I choose to make it larger, but in this case I wanted to see if I could pull it off on a smaller size. I think it works quite well. The scene is siutated at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and although the painting is mostly covered the couple is looking at the Milkmaid by Vermeer.

Observers Two will be shown at my open studio next weekend. Tomorrow I will continue the preview!

The Window

One of the nicest things about old paintings is that they offer a view into the past. They show us the world of our forefathers, which I find very interesting. On my painting you see a young couple taking such a view in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The painting though mostly covered by the figures is The Letter by Vermeer.

The Flavour

For us it's quite normal to get a close look at a painting in a museum, but Rembrandt made his paintings in a style best viewed at a small distance. He used to say that his paintings are there to look at and not to smell them, meaning people shouldn't get so close that they can smell it. On my painting you see a man doing this. The painting hangs near The Milkmaid and The Letter by Vermeer, but I completely forgot who painted this one. If you happen to know the answer I would love to hear it!

I decided not to sell yesterdays painting of my dad looking at my great-grandfather. The painting is just too personal and besides that my dad's birthday is coming up in may. I think it makes a great birthday present. My dad doesn't own a computer, let alone that he knows how to get on the internet, but if you happen to see him, please don't say a word! It will be our little secret!

The Best Men

The painting the two young men are looking at is the worldfamous The Jewish Bride by Rembrandt. The figures on Rembrandts painting probably aren't Jewish at all, most likely they're posing as the biblical figures Isaac and Rebecca. An artdealer in the 19th century though saw in this painting a Jewish father giving his daughter a necklace for her marriage. Since then it was known as The Jewish Bride. It doesn't really matter, my figures are still best men!

The Reflection

Okay, yesterdays painting ought to show 'Milkmaid' by Vermeer, but you could hardly see it. Today I thought let's use the same painting again, but more visible. I took the liberty to change the background colour into a smooth red, I feel it works well here. I hope you like the results!

This afternoon I was interviewed about my daily paintings on radio Omrop Fryslan. It was a very nice interview and I would like to thank everybody at Omrop Fryslan!

The Observers

I had a nice slow painting day. All because it's Eastern I slept in till late, had a huge breakfast with eggs of course and then went to my studio. I still feel blessed everytime I'm there. Todays scene is taken from a visit to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. It's not allowed in Dutch museums to take pictures, but I sneaked my camera in, dodged the security I managed to take some. I'm glad I did, the museum series are so much fun to make. On the painting you see two figures observing the worldfamous painting 'Milkmaid' by Vermeer. You can hardly see it though, I guess you just have to take my word for it!
