Publishing - Painting of bookshelf 6" x 6"

When I first started making still lives earlier this year, I didn't know that it was so much fun. I just love making them! Today I painted this bookshelf filled with books about publishing as seen in a local bookstore. While painting this one it reminded me of Mondriaan, because of all the lines. Funny how something realistic can be similar to something abstract. I'm thinking about making a larger still life one of these days, but I'm not sure yet.

The Ikea - Man looking for 'art' at Ikea store 6" x 6"

A man is looking for some 'art' at the Ikea-store. Of course the art he's looking at isn't real art, they're just prints on canvas not even limited in edition. Thousands of the same image are in circulation and many have them in their homes. To be honest with you I cannot stand these type of images. Ah well, what can you do about it? Not much, but I sure can make a painting of just that and that's what I did. Hope you enjoy it!

kind regards, Gerard Boersma

Subway Platform

It's completed! Today I made the last much needed adjustments to Subway Platform and now I'm completely satisfied with it. The middle part between the train and the tiles was still a little tricky, but I blended it all together by putting a transparant layer of reddish black. It works well. Tomorrow I will post a smaller sized painting as you're used from me!

Subway Platform - Painting in progress part 2

Subway Platform - a painting in progress

Part 2 of the subway painting in progress. The painting is coming along just great! Compared to yesterday a lot of things have changed today. I concentrated mostly on the lower part of the painting, worked a couple of hours on the tiles as well as the part between the tiles and the train. That part looks quite easy, but believe me it's not. The browns, reds and blacks are so close in color, that it becomes quite a drag to get it right. I'm still not satisfied with it. Apart from the lower part I also continued working on the upper part. The train got some extra layers of paint and certain parts have more light in it now. The window right still needs to be worked on. Ah well, I continue working on it next week!

Today an article about me appeared on New York City Mag, highlighting a couple of my paintings from my New York-series, including the smaller version of Subway Platform and my painting of Ground Zero, The Attraction. You can read the article here. The article is written in French! Enjoy and have a great weekend!

Subway Platform - Painting in progress

Yesterday after completing Hot Dog Vendor I started to work on a larger scaled painting of Subway Platform on a masonite panel 0f 51,8 x 44 cm (20.4" x 17.3"). I continued working on it today and I thought it might be a good idea to show you the progress and a glimpse on how I work.

Subway Platform - painting in progress

I always start with a drawing directly done on the panel, getting everything in place and getting the proportions straight. I use a normal pencil for this. After the drawing is complete I erase superfluous lines and start blocking in basic color. Usually I begin with black (mixed myself), then adding other colors in no particular order. You'll notice that this first layer of paint is still very transparant. I'll keep on adding layers untill a solid underground is reached. With strong colors like yellow and red at least 5 or 6 layers are needed. I then begin blending the colors untill the effect I want starts appearing. Usually starting in the upper part of the painting. By lunch the painting looks something like the picture on the above right.

Started to work on the portrait and contnued adding layers

While blending the colors I use several brushes at the same time, each one has it's own color. I mix the colors on my palette (an old lid of a bucket of latex paint) or directly on the painting itself. I often wind up using my fingers for blending as well. As you can see I mainly focused on the train today and didn't worry much about the portrait of the man untill later this afternoon. At this point I consider nothing finished yet, but for now it will do. Tomorrow I will continue working on Subway Platform, focussing on the tiles and floor. Hope to see you then!

Hot Dog Vendor - Painting of Hotdog Vendor New York

If you have been following my blog you probably know I'm not that fond on fastfood, but somehow I love to paint it. Today I finished this painting of a Hot Dog Vendor in New York. I know from experience New York can get mighty chilly at times and I'm just glad I don't have to stand outside everyday like the vendor on my painting.

Young Ladies - Painting of woman looking at art 9.9" x 8.7"

This morning I felt like doing another museum scene for todays painting. The young woman is looking at 'Young ladies on the beach' by Théo Rysselberghe (1862-1926) . This Belgium painter is one of the most important figures in the field of Neo-impressionism and introduced the pointillist technique of Seurat and Signac in Belgium. It was quite a challenge for me to paint an impressionist painting, the colors are completely different from what I usually use! I thought the contrast between young ladies early 20th century and a young lady from our day and age is quite interesting. The painting is situated at The Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels.

Alligator - Painting of woman looking at art 6 x 6"

You might be wondering why todays painting is entitled 'Alligator'. Well, if you look closely on the painting the woman is looking at you see a naked man fighting of an alligator, while an young lady is looking at the scene. This lovely painting is by Felix Vallotton as seen in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg.

Today I also got some very good news! I cannot say much about it for now, I wish I could, but it has something to do with an artfair and believe me it's huge! More info soon!

Connexxion - Painting of people in citybus 6 x 6"

The short break from my daily paintings last week worked well for me. I'm full of inspiriation and I'm seeing things fresh again, like todays painting of one of our citybuses owned by a company called Connexxion. I really like the scene through the windows, it makes a wonderful composition. Glass is always quite hard to paint, but I do believe I'm getting the hang of it now, putting one transparant layer over the other.

I recently made a profile on Linkedin as well as on Facebook. If you happen to have have a profile there too, I sure would love it if we could connect there!

Surfing - Painting of woman behind computer 6 x 6"

Last week the Noordelijk Filmfestival took place in my hometown Leeuwarden. The festival is about movies, movies and more movies. Usually they show alternative movies, you know those which aren't made in Hollywood, but this year there were a lot of documentaries too. I visited the festival last saturday and I saw a real bad one. Luckily I also saw this scene of a lady taking a break from the movies and checking the internet. She traded the big screen for a smalller one.

As you probably know already I auction my paintings here on my blog, but I decided to run them a little bit longer than one day. Starting now the auction will last for a week.

Park Place - Subway painting New York 6 x 6"

It feels good to be working on my daily paintings again! Today I returned to one of my favourite subjects of all time: the subway of New York. Usually I paint the people riding the metro, but I now focused more on the carriage itself. The chrome metal being the one thing that attracts me most. It's great fun to paint shiny things like that.

Today I also finished the larger scale painting I mentioned yesterday. I'm going to do the over night test, just to make sure it's really finished. I think I'll post the painting the day after tomorrow.

Dirk

I'm back! I had a nice slow week after my open studio. Well slow isn't really the word for it, all I had was a break from my daily paintings. I worked on a larger scale painting all week. It's nearing completion and with a bit of luck I can show it to you this week. It's been a while since I last worked a whole week on just one painting, it felt really good, but after just a couple of days I started to miss my daily paintings and I'm more than happy to start again.

On todays painting you see a couple of muslim women waiting for the tram to show up at the Central Station in Amsterdam. One of the women is wearing a burka. She's also carrying a shopping bag which says Dirk. This is the name of a well-known chain of supermarkets in The Netherlands. It hardly gets more Dutch than that. I thought the contrast with the muslim women is quite interesting.

While working on the larger scale painting last week I also had some time to re-think my weblog. I decided to go at it a little different than you're used to. Starting now my daily paintings will be auctioned on my blog. The auctions will only last for one day. If you see a painting of your interest you can easily place your bid by email. All bids are collected untill 8pm (local time Leeuwarden, The Netherlands) the following day. Please check out 'More information about the auction' for full details. Please note that spread payments in 2 terms are now possible too. If you have any questions or remarks please feel free to contact me anytime. I would be more than happy to answer them personally!

Open studio

This weekend was crazy! During my open studio last weekend I had the honour to welcome over 200 guests. I enjoyed talking to them and answering all their questions, believe me there were a lot! By the end of the weekend I was completely worn out and sold a couple of paintings too.

It has been so busy, that I decided to take it easy on myself this week. I am painting, but taking my time with it. I'm not sure how many times I will update my blog this week, but I will be back in full effect next week for sure!
