The Reader

I love to read, so it’s no wonder that you can find me at the library quite often. I love to read literature classics, some books about philosophy and of course I love to read about art. One day I saw this lady sitting with her book. The whole scene looked so peaceful and at the same time meaningful.

Have a nice weekend!

kind regards, Gerard Boersma

The Highway (Going Home)

Me and a friend recently visited a close friend of ours. The weather was bad. It had been raining all day and it still did when we decided to head back to our city. Although I had a good time at my friends house I was feeling kind of tired and I couldn't wait to get home. I guess it was the wetter. When we stopped at a traffic-light I saw this view which expressed exactly how I felt at the time and right there and then I decided to paint it.

I also got my hand on some pictures of the opening last sunday, you can see those here.

The Traffic-Light at night

Just like my other blog painting The Traffic-Light this painting is situated in New York. It has the same meaning too, but I decided to paint another one at night. The lighting and atmosphere make the scene more dramatic and I simply love it.

I enjoyed the opening at Galerie Help U Zelven in Winterswijk yesterday. I like to thank everybody who showed up, it was nice talking to all of you! The responses where great and I'm convinced that we put a great show together that's really worth seeing. You can do so untill jan 19 2008. I'm hoping to get my hands on some pictures soon!

The Traffic-Light

This traffic-light is situated in New York. I forgot the exact place, but it's somewhere near Wallstreet. For me red traffic-lights symbolize somebody telling me that I cannot make it as an artist. It may not be easy, but I know at some point the light has to turn green and I can reach the otherside safely. One could say the painting is really about persistance and waiting your turn.

Update Leeuwarder Courant Christmas Special

I'm currently working on the commission by the Leeuwarder Courant for their Christmas Special which I mentioned earlier. I found it kind of hard to come up with a good idea around the theme 'exception'. A lot of ideas where just too simple, but I finally got one which I'm really satisfied with. I'm painting it as we speak. Due to our agreement I cannot tell you that much about it, it will spoil the surprise when published, but it has something to do with an old lady. I'm also working on my daily paintings as well, so you guys don't have to be affraid about me not posting anything new!

The Toy

I recently became an uncle again! My brother Frank and his girlfriend Dinah are the proud parents of a beautiful baby boy called Lars.

I was in a toy-shop looking to buy a present for my new born nephew when I saw this gun. I couldn't believe how real it looked. I remember saying to myself: 'Do we really want our children to play with guns?' I don't know if it's right for children or not, but then again I wish more adults would pick up guns like these to play with. My nephew got a good old teddy bear by the way!

Show at Galerie Help U Zelven

Last summer Galerie Help U Zelven from Winterswijk asked me to design a table-cloth together with Louise Cohen. After some hard work we finally got the design together a couple of weeks ago and it's looking pretty good! The table-cloth is actually a game you can play with your friends.

It’s made by the Dutch Textile Museum and will be shown at Galerie Help U Zelven from nov. 25 till jan. 19. It will be available in a limited edition of only 5. All 5 have different colors with matching napkins. Besides the table-cloth Louise will show her latest designs and I will show my paintings. You’re cordially invited to grand opening this sunday from 12.00 - 17.00h. Love to see you there!

Tomorrow I will post another daily painting!

The Children

I'm back from my vacation in Valencia, Spain! Me and my girlfriend Esther enjoyed all the good stuff the city has to offer. I especially liked the Spanish cuisine and the city of art and science. This masterpiece of architecture by Valencians own Calatrava are a must see when you visit the city! Ah well, it's back to painting again.

The Children started out as a study for a larger sized painting, but I liked it so much that I decided to finish it. It reminded me of my own childhood when nothing was more important than a couple of blocks with wheels on it. As you grow older you get all these responsibilities and things aren't always that easy. The painting shows it can be that simple at times.

The Lover

Yes I know I told all of you that I wouldn't post any new paintings this week due to my vacation, but I had some time left and I just couldn't help myself.

I always wanted to make a painting of somebody looking at art, I finally did so. The painting expresses my love for art and of course the rose is a symbol for this. The lovely lady is looking at a painting by Piet Hein van Asperen, a not so well known Frisian painter but a very good one. I had a great time painting this one and I think I'll make a larger sized painting of it as well.

Tomorrow I'm going on vacation to Valencia Spain which I'm really looking forward to. I'll be back next week!

Oddment - The Oldehove

Pisa isn't the only town with a crooked tower, my hometown Leeuwarden has one too! It's called the Oldehove and stands about 40 m. tall and about 1.69 m. crooked. Construction started in 1529 but was soon abanded when the tower started to sink in the ground. The people of Leeuwarden were left behind with an unfinished tower.

As a painter from Leeuwarden you just have to paint our landmark at least once. I decided to go for a night scene. The little building on the left is one of the entrances of the newly build car park beneath the ground.

Next week I won't be able to post any new paintings. I'm going on vacation to Valencia, Spain for a couple of days! I'll be back in business on november 19.

The Ticket Machine

I often like to paint things where other painters turn up their noses at. This time I saw this car park ticket machine. Everything gets automated nowadays and we depend heavily on our machinery. Those darn things can still look beautiful though!

Leeuwarder Courant Christmas Special

The Leeuwarder Courant has asked me to paint the cover for their annual christmas special! For those who have never heard of the Leeuwarder Courant, it's the largest newspaper in my region with more than 100.000 readers. As you can imagine I'm very honored that they have asked me.

The theme for their christmas special will be 'Exception' and it's also the theme for my painting. Other than that I'm totally free to paint what I like. As an exception (pun intended..) the Leeuwarder Courant also offers a limited number of giclées of the painting. This is a very high quality fine art print, in this case on paper. The giclées will be numbered and signed. I'm very excited about this and cannot wait to get started!

Tomorrow I will post a new blog painting!

The Electronic Shop

Nowadays almost everybody has a mobile phone. The man on the painting is looking to buy a new one. I often wonder why we need a new phone every other year or so. Is it because those damn things seem to fall apart after a year or do we all want to have the latest thing? I don't know, but I do know the man on the painting has soon one that works and is hip at the same time.

The Containers

Our society is aimed at youth I often feel that old folks don't really count in our society. To symbolize this I painted them next to a trash-can, the place where you put stuff you don't longer need. For me the elderly are also a container, not of trash but of wisdom, knowledge or at least life experience. And that's something we youngsters could use, isn't it? That's why I called the painting The Containers, there's more than one of it on the painting.
