A while ago the library in my hometown approached me for a commissioned painting for one of their collegues who was leaving. She had worked at the music department for years and they wanted something special for her. I came up with the idea of painting her favourite cd's with the library as background. You might recognise covers by artists such as Fats Domino, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and Ray Charles. Kind of hard to do on such a small scale, but very satisfying as well. The painting was well received!
Right now I'm working on another commissioned painting. I cannot tell much about it yet as this painting will be surprise as well. It will take the latter of the week to complete it.
My shoulder is still not what it used to be unfortunately. I went to the physiotherapist this morning and will do so again on wednesday. He reassured me that is was nothing that serious and it will only take about two visits to get things back to normal. It's kind of drag to have a constant burning pain, so I sure hope he's right!
kind regards, Gerard

Graffiti Train
Not a lot of people know this, but I used to be a graffiti artist. Well, only did legal walls of course. If I spraypainted something illegal in the village I grew up in, the only cop there knew exactly who to turn to, so that was out of the question. Soon I moved on from graffiti to realistic painting, because I felt I could express myself way better that way. But whenever I see something related to graffiti it always grabs my attention as is the case with todays painting. The woman just happened to stand in the way;)

Obama Books Two
A while ago I painted a still life of books about Obama. I actually had another one in mind, but didn't started to work on that untill yesterday. I thought I could finish it in one day easily, but boy what I was wrong.
I already had a slow start, because the art commission of Isala hospital from Zwolle paid me a visit on monday evenening which was great. As from now on my painting Subway Platform is part of their impressive collection of art!
Of course I celebrated and went to bed late. But when I did woke up, my shoulder was hurting, must have slept on it wrong, making it difficult to lift my left arm. Of course that's the one I paint with. Nonetheless I started working on Obama Books Two, but the details were too much to finish in one session, especially with a shoulder like that. Started to work on it again today, my shoulder even worse. But I managed to finish the painting, sure hope you enjoy it!

Escalator
In downtown Los Angeles I hung around the Ernst and Young Plaza for a while. The plaza is almost like a big hole in the ground, but it's nice to visit though. A lot of business men and woman grab a bite there during lunchtime at one of the many lunchrooms. The way to get there is by one of many escalators. On one of them I spotted this young lady, going up to leave again. I thought it would make a lovely theme for todays painting.

Hats- man looking at Rembrandt Getty Center
As I told you tuesday the attendant was guarding some paintings by Rembrandt. On todays painting you see a guy looking at those paintings. On Rembrandts painting the man portraited wears a funny looking hat, I'm not sure what kind of hat is really. My figure also wears a hat, well a baseball cap to be exact. Makes me wonder how a common thing like a baseball cap will look outdated a couple of 100 years from now.

It doesn't matter which great museum you visit, they're bound to have a couple of old Dutch master paintings hanging there. Being a Dutchman and painter myself that always makes me proud. The Getty Center in Los Angeles is no exception to the rule. It has loads of Dutch master paintings. On my painting you see a lovely landscape by Hobbema on the left and in the background a painting by Rembrandt, all guarded by an attendant of the museum. I tried a different colour scheme as I used to, which works quite well. Also worked for a change with many underlayers in different colours, especially at the walls. It gives them more structure and subtle colour changes.

Entombment - museum tour in Getty Center in front of Rubens
Yesterday I completed this larger sized painting of a tour right in front of a couple of paintings by Peter Paul Rubens in the Getty Center in Los Angeles. I wanted it to show you show the painting then, but I couldn't get a good picture, I'm still not completely satisfied with it, but it will do.
In any case the painting is just perfect for Eastern, because the tourguide is talking about Rubens painting Entombment from about 1612. The painting depicts the moment after the Crucifixion and before the Resurrection when Christ is placed into the tomb. The Entombment was meant to make the viewer's religious experience personal and encourage the faithful to imagine the physical horror of Christ's Crucifixion. The painting left shows a small part of Rubens The Calydonian Boar Hunt from about the same year as Entombment.
While painting I suddenly realized that I was competing against one of the great masters of the past. I just had to get the paintings right or else my whole painting would fail. This made me a little nervous I can tell you, but the part which eventually gave me the most trouble was the green background. Go figure, not having any troubles with the Rubens, but with the plain backgrond! In any case I'm really satisfied with the results and feel it's one of the best paintings from my museum series yet. Happy Eastern!

Self Improvement - painting of bookshelf
I know I said I would pick up my daily painting as you're used to, but the thing is I'm currently working on a larger sized painting which is nearing completion. Eastern is coming up too and the larger sized painting is just perfect for it. So instead of picking up my dailies I first want to finish this painting. I'm not going to tell you what's on it, you just have to wait and see! In the meantime I hope you enjoy Self Improvement!

Mare
It seems I'm heavy on the portraits this week. Today I've got a portrait for you of Mare, the new born baby of close friends of mine. The painting was commissioned by the parents of the mother as a gift. On the portrait Mare is just one day old. Imagine that, being portraited on the day you were born.
I'll be picking up my dailies next week like I used to. Have a great weekend!

I recently visited the music library in my hometown Leeuwarden. The guy that works there really knows his stuff, he's a walking encyclopiia. I asked him if wanted to pose for me and he kindly obliged. So here it is, the music library.
