I sometimes use my small daily paintings as studies for my larger works, you know, just to see how it looks or just to try out something. Todays painting is just that, a study for my larger sized piece The Product I did a couple of weeks ago.

Before I started working on the larger sized piece I wanted to practice a little with all those different types of people on the escalator. Besides that I experimented with the composition. I like how you don't really see the escalator here, but after going back and forth I eventually went for a wider shot for my larger sized painting.

During my lunchbreak today I noticed Ray Bradbury's book Fahrenheit 451 lying around on my table. To be honest, it's the only book I ever read by him and I don't know much about the man. So during my lunchbreak I checked youtube if there was any info about the author who's book I enjoyed so tremendously. I happened to stumble upon a couple of very interesting and inspirational clips.

In one of them he said: 'If we listened to our intellect we'd never have a love affair. We'd never have a friendship. We'd never go in business because we'd be cynical: "It's gonna go wrong." Or, "She's going to hurt me." Or,"I've had a couple of bad love affairs, so therefore . . ." Well, that's nonsense. You're going to miss life. You've got to jump off the cliff all the time and build your wings on the way down.'

After hearing him say that I looked at my painting I just finished and sort of felt sorry for the figures on my painting. Yes, they seem to be happy with all the new products they just bought, but they weren't jumping off any cliff, they're taking the escalator for God's sake. Sure hope that they have other inspirational things to do as well, because leaving the Ikea at the back of the store on a escalator sure isn't one of them, is it?

Escalator

In downtown Los Angeles I hung around the Ernst and Young Plaza for a while. The plaza is almost like a big hole in the ground, but it's nice to visit though. A lot of business men and woman grab a bite there during lunchtime at one of the many lunchrooms. The way to get there is by one of many escalators. On one of them I spotted this young lady, going up to leave again. I thought it would make a lovely theme for todays painting.

Bullseye

Last year I made a daily painting of a muslim girl taking an escalator. Ever since I wanted to do a larger scale painting of it, but never got to it. I finally did so and I'm very satisfied with the results. The scene was kind of tricky to paint with the unusual perspective and all. Very confusing at times and I had to make several corrections while painting, but I finally managed it. Bullseye will be shown for the first time during my open studio.

Going Up

Knowing that I'm going to move soon to my new studio gives my quite a boost in energy lately. I'm feeling good and I've got a lot of inspiration. Today I painted this scene of two young women taking an escalator in the Magna Plaza, Amsterdam. The women couldn't be further apart in backgrounds, but they're going to the next level together. I wish more people did.

The Escalator

I’m not a huge fan of shopping but whenever I have to go to a mall I always have a great time just watching people. Just recently I saw this woman taking the escalator. Through the odd perspective we cannot see where she’s going or if she knows the woman in the upperleft corner. Maybe she does and there’s a crowd cheering for them downstairs, who knows!

The Bullseye

While visiting Amsterdam the otherday I saw this muslima girl going up with the escalator in the Magna Plaza Mall. Somehow her spotless red clothing and the architecture reminded me of a dartboard, hence the title.

The Lookalike

After delivering my work for my show at the ICO in Assen I saw this lady coming down on the escalator. She had a blue shirt on and I suddenly saw the similarity between her and the dummy beneath her. They could have been twins to me!
