30.9.08The Bookshelf
I'm still enjoying experimenting with still lifes, for todays painting I traded my glasses for books, one of my other favourite subjects The painting shows a bookshelf, but I'm not going to tell you which books you're looking at, I leave that totally up to your own imagination!

29.9.08The Corner
Well here it is, the larger sized painting I talked about last week. It took me about a month to complete. The scene reminded me of my own childhood when nothing was more important than a couple of blocks with wheels on it. As you grow older you get all these responsibilities and things aren't always that easy. The painting shows it can be that simple at times. The scene is situated at the Ikea-store.

The larger sized painting I talked about yesterday will have to wait for monday I'm afraid, there are still a few things that need some work. Nothing big, but I know they're going to irritate me if I don't work on it some more. In the meantime I sure hope you enjoy todays painting. The painting the little girl is looking at is by Chagall. The scene is situated in the MOMA in New York.

25.9.0823rd Street
This is one of the stations I traveled to from yesterdays subway station. Of course there were others as well, but this one caught my eye because of the arrangement of the people. The view from the platform across trough all the black beams make the scene complete for me.
Besides my daily painting I just completed a larger size one as well today. Well that is to say I think I did. I'm going to do the overnight test, you know let it rest for a while and then see if there's any adjusting to do. It's a great scene with children, but you see that soon enough! kind regards, Gerard Boersma ![]()

24.9.08Houston Street
The first time I visited New York I stayed in a lovely loft on Houston Street. From there I explored the city either by foot or the subway. Todays painting shows the subway station I often took. The scene spoke to me because of the strong perspective and the train heading towards you. I wish you could see it for real, the painting is way more detailed than the picture.

23.9.08Salon
While painting Sideways I thought it would be a great idea to zoom out more and show you more of the room in the museum. I don't know all the artists of the paintings, but I know the one behind the lady is by Alma Tadema. The scene is situated at the Kunsthalle in Hamburg.

22.9.08Dr. Pepper
In my fridge I found another great still-life just waiting there. I grabbed it and put it in my little corner where I usually set up my still-lifes. When you change the lighting of these glasses and cans, the objects turn out to be beautiful things. I just couldn't resist sharing it with you.

19.9.08Seven Up
Just found another great glass to paint, no classy Martini glass this time, but straight up Seven Up to quench your thirst. Seven Up was way more difficult to paint than the Pepsi and Coca Cola ones, the lack of color on the glass was the main reason for this. I always love these challenges and my heart skips a beat when I get the results I'm looking for, rest assured it did! Have a great weekend!

Sideways is situated in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg, Germany. The lovely lady on the painting is looking at a piece of art by fellow Dutchman Alma Tadema, he's even from the same region as I am and quite an inspiration for me. Painting was quite hard by the way, not that the subject was that difficult, but because I got a severe cold. It's kind of hard to breath, but don't worry it will pass soon I hope!

Todays painting is inspired by my visit to the exhibition of Felix Vallotton in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg. I love the lighting with the backfigures and that strange little corner, sure hope you enjoy it as much as I did painting it!

16.9.08Martini
After my still lifes with all kinds of soda I decided it was time for something more classy. Therefore on todays painting you see a Martini glass, quite stylish ain't it?

What a weekend it has been! Last friday my one man show opened at Galerie van den Berg. There was a nice crowd and I enjoyed talking to everybody. The art really looks good hanging on the walls and I got many good responses from everybody. I would like to thank you all for your kind words! After the opening I went to another party some friends of mine were throwing to celebrate, It was very late before I went home, I can tell you that.
I keep it in the bookstores with todays painting. Edward Hopper once said that is quite difficult to paint indoors and outdoors at the same time. While painting this one I found out that he's right, but it isn't impossible. The painting is situated at the American Bookstore at De Spui in Amsterdam. kind regards, Gerard Boersma ![]()
SOLD 11.9.08The Library
The second painting I especially painted for my one man show at Galerie van den Berg shows the library again. The show opens tommorrow and I'm really looking forward to that. On display are 23 paintings. Besides my usual urban scenes I will also show paintings with a library and bookstore theme. More information about the show can be found here. You're cordially invited and I hope to greet you as my guest tomorrow!

8.9.08Museum Bench
While visiting the Kunsthalle in Hamburg I noticed these two ladies taking a rest and enjoying the view in the impressionist room. And an impressive view it is! You can see Manets painting Nana on the background.
As you might have heard already this friday my one man show opens at Galerie van den Bergh in my hometown Leeuwarden. The gallery is located in the Beurs, a passage to our public library. Besides my urban landscapes I will also show some paintings with the theme library and bookstores. Later this week I will post two new paintings which I especially painted for this occasion. For show details please click here. kind regards, Gerard Boersma ![]()
5.9.08Coca Cola Can
I'm slowly getting addicted to paint these little still-lifes besides my usual urban scenes. They're such fun to make and how strange it may sound sometimes more difficult too. That has to do with the minimal subjects, you cannot afford to make one mistake in either composition, lighting or anything else. It's a new challenge!
kind regards, Gerard Boersma ![]()
4.9.08The Nose
Rembrandt once said that a painting is there to look at, not to smell it, meaning a painting is best viewed at a small distance. Somehow like the man on my painting I always love to take a close look myself. Studying the techniques and brushwork can be very illuminating. The paintings on my painting are by Van Gogh as seen in his museum in Amsterdam. If you would like to bid on this painting please click here to place your bid.

3.9.08Fanta
After painting the other still-lifes I've done of glasses recently I felt like making another, this time of a Fanta glass. It was quite challenging getting all the reflections and lighting straight, but it sure is great fun to do.

2.9.08Portrait
In the midst of the results of my special birthday action I still found time to paint. On todays painting you see a man looking a beautiful selfportrait by Felix Vallotton in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg. On the background you can see one of the security guards. You might recognize the yellow wall from my previous painting The Nude.

The Results of my Special Birthday Action
After a nerve wrecking month I finally announce the winners of my special birthday action! Before I do I want to thank everybody for their many kind, creative and personal motivations. I had a great time reading them all!
One person wrote to me that Holy Water reminded him of a movie he had seen, while another saw Coca Cola as the only remedy for her pregnancy aches and pains. Somebody else talked in length about being a bull himself and therefore couldn't live without The Bull. Others wanted to have Holy Water for the deposit you get for bringing back the bottles of Coke to the supermarket. As you can imagine, I've had a hard time picking a winner, but our expertise jury, existing of me, myself and I finally managed to do so! Winner Holy Water - Renee Hilgers When Renee saw Holy Water she immediately thought of her son, who's addicted to Coca Cola and an artlover as well. Her son currently serves in Iraq. Renee wants to give him the painting, because anything from home or pictures that remind him of home are priceless. Holy Water would be such a hoot and a real reminder of home and just shows how much his family loves him. ![]()

1.9.08Photographer
I was not the only one taking pictures in the Kunsthalle during the Felix Vallotton exhibition. I noticed this guy taking a lot of pictures of the art displayed. He brought quite some equipment with him, you know different lenses and stuff like that. He was well prepared, but who can blame him, the art was just beautiful!
Tomorrow I will announce the winners of my special birthday action. Hold tight! kind regards, Gerard Boersma ![]()
