Still Life of Art Books- Caravaggio

Caravaggio Books
Still life of art books

G. Boersma
acrylics on masonite
30" x 29.3" or 76 x 74,5 cm
2011

After painting my series for Explore the North festival my original plan was to return to my daily paintings, but I couldn't help myself. I really wanted to paint this still life of art books first.

On the painting you see a detail of Caravaggio's masterpiece Judith beheading Holofernes. The painting tells the story of how Judith saved her people by first seducing Holofernes and then decapitating him with his own sword.

Although the story is pretty gruesome, I feel the portrait of Judith is one the best in art history. The expression on Judith's face is just amazing. Of course this large still life was a great excuse to make my own copy. Other art books include books about Vincent Van Gogh and Salvador Dali.

Caravaggio Books and 26 other large paintings can be seen at my solo show at ROI, Heerengracht 23 in The Hague. The show opens this tuesday december 20 at 16.30h. and runs to the end of january. I hope to greet you there as my guest!

Art Within Art- Van Gogh's Portrait of Gaugain

Portrait of Gaugain
woman enjoying Van Gogh's Portrait of Gaugain

G. Boersma
acrylics on masonite
6" x 6" or 15 x 15 cm
2011
SOLD

On todays painting you see a woman admiring Van Gogh's portrait of Gaugain. Both painters lived and worked together for a while. Rumor has it that Vincent's brother Theo paid Gaugain to do so.

Vincent was desperate for a painting buddy and thought Gaugain was the perfect match. From Gaugain's point of view it wasn't. He couldn't handle Van Gogh's odd moods.

There's a theory floating around that it was Gaugain who cut Van Gogh's ear during a nasty fight. Vincent protected Gaugain by saying he did it to himself, that's how much he wanted Gaugain to stay.

Not sure if this theory has any truth to it, but it sure is an interesting take on things. Finally Gaugain left, but not before Van Gogh made this wonderful portrait of him.

The Nose

Rembrandt once said that a painting is there to look at, not to smell it, meaning a painting is best viewed at a small distance. Somehow like the man on my painting I always love to take a close look myself. Studying the techniques and brushwork can be very illuminating. The paintings on my painting are by Van Gogh as seen in his museum in Amsterdam. If you would like to bid on this painting please click here to place your bid.

Landscape

The paintings I love best by Vincent van Gogh are his landscapes. Those are usually very colourful, bright and just plain beautiful. The man on my painting is looking at one of them and it sure was great fun to paint! If you would like to have this blogpainting just click on the link beneath the painting to place your bid. You'll receive the painting safely packaged after a week up to days after the auction ends.

In other news I'm busy framing my paintings for my upcoming one man show at Galerie Van den Berg in my hometown Leeuwarden. It's going to be a good one, I can tell you. There's still time left to enter my special birthday action. Next week the winners will be announced!
