The Subway

Thank you all for all your nice comments on the cover of the Leeuwarder Courant! As promised here's todays painting!

While I was in New York for my show in Soho I often took the subway to get around town. While waiting for my own train I saw this scene right in front of me. The train is about to close its doors and is almost ready to leave. People are getting aboard in the nick of time and as always the train is crowded. It always intriques me when people are put together in places with other people they don’t know. I often wonder what they're thinking of, especially the Asian woman in the middle.

Due to the holidays this is the only painting I'm putting online this week. I'll be back next week. Merry Christmas and a happy newyear!

kind regards, Gerard Boersma

The Exeption - Cover Christmas Special Leeuwarder Courant

It's here! My painting 'The Exception' is printed on the cover of the Christmas Special of the Leeuwarder Courant. It feels really good to see my painting printed in that many copies (about 100.000) and I'm very happy about the results!

As I mentioned earlier the theme for the Christmas Special is 'exception' and so is my painting. On my painting you can see an old lady in front of a cash-machine at night. You hardly see any women alone on the streets in Holland at night, let alone an old lady. She doesn’t feel threatened in any way though, she feels safe enough to even use the cash-machine. A device the elderly usually love to avoid. As you can see, she’s a real exception in many ways!

The original painting is available for purhase, but giclées are available too. Those are high quality reproductions on paper made with the computer. Once finished one can hardly tell the difference between the original and the giclées. The giclées are signed and numbered and are available in a limited edition of just 100 for only 50,- euro each. The giclées come with a certificate of authenticity and are the same size as the original painting, 60 x 45 cm or 23,6 x 17.7”. You can order your giclée directly from the Leeuwarder Courant by writing to: Redactiesecretariaat Leeuwarder Courant, Sixmastraat 15, Postbus 394 , 8901 BD, Leeuwarden. By phone 0031 (0) 58 2845655 or by email redactiesecretariaat@leeuwardercourant.nl or just send me an email. I would be happy to forward your order for you.

Due to the holidays I'm only able to publish one new painting this week, but the painting will be a bit larger in size and I promise you it's going to be a good one as you can see for yourself tomorrow!

Merry Christmas and a happy newyear!

kind regards, Gerard Boersma

The Chase Two

I finally acted upon the advice of my familymembers and very talented painters Grietje Huisman en Gerrit Wijngaarden. They sometimes tell me that a couple of my paintings could be stronger if I didn't paint every detail, but just a small piece of it. Usually I brush aside their advice quite nonchalantly, but when I took a second look at my painting ' The Chase' I thought: 'My family just might have a point here.' So I took heed to their wise words and I'm very satisfied with the results. I might just take another look at other paintings as well!

I told you guys yesterday that the Christmas Special of the Leeuwarder Courant with my painting The Exception on the cover will be available this saturday, but I just heard that it will be published on monday dec 24th. We have to wait a little bit longer!

Merry Christmas and a happy newyear!

kind regards, Gerard Boersma

Update cover Leeuwarder Courant

I just got back from signing and numbering all the giclées of my painting ‘The Exception’. It was a real thrill to see them! For those who have never heard of a giclée, it’s a high quality reproduction made from the original painting and in this case printed on paper. One can hardly tell the difference between my orignal painting and the giclées. Art Revisited did an excellent job!

This saturday the Leeuwarder Courant will publish their Christmas Special with ‘The Exception’ on the cover. Inside there’s an article about me as well. As the Leeuwarder Courant has the right to publish the painting first, it’s still a secret how the paintings looks. Of course I will put it online as soon as I can!

The giclées will be available from this saturday on in a limited edition of just 100 for only 50,- euro each. The giclées come with a certificate of authenticity and are the same size as the original painting, 60 x 45 cm or 23,6 x 17.7”. The original painting is also still available for purchase. You can order the giclée directly from the Leeuwarder Courant or just send me an email. I would be happy to forward your order for you.

The Bonifatius Church

I already painted The Oldehove and The Avero Tower, but I couldn't resist the temptation to paint our other landmark The Bonifatius Church as well. The church was build around 1884 and is dedicated to Saint Bonifatius, as you probably guessed already. It's one of the highlights in the career of architect Cuypers, who also designed the Rijksmuseum and the Central Station, both in Amsterdam.

Tomorrow afternoon I will sign and number the giclées of my painting 'The Exception', which I made for the cover of the Christmas Special of the Leeuwarder Courant! Cannot wait to see how they look!

The Choice

I enjoy drinking a cold beer after some hard work, especially the heavier ones. Last week I ran fresh out of my special beers and I went to the supermarket to pick up a new sixpack. Standing in front of all these different types of beer I couldn’t make up my mind which one to pick. Life is full with choices, some are hard and some are easy. This one was defenitely a hard one and it inspired me to make this painting.

The Chase

When I was in New York for my exhibition in Soho I saw this man standing at a cash-machine. I often feel that money rules everything around us and I thought this was an beautiful motif to express that. I couldn't help but smiling when I read the name of the bank: 'The Chase'. It's all in the name as they say!

The Tram

During my visit to The Hague I saw this man waiting at the tram-stop near central station. Obviously the tram right in front of him wasn't the one he was waiting for, but I saw him looking at the man inside. It was almost like he was looking at a painting in a museum and thought it was a beautiful motif for todays painting. I think it just might work on a larger size as well, let's find out!

The Diggin'

Just like the man on the painting I'm a lover of music. I listen to al lot of reggae, dancehall and good old nineties hip hop. As long as it has a good grove in it I'm enjoying it, especially when it's pressed on those big black cd's. The man on the painting is looking for that special record which perhaps makes his collection complete or just makes him want to dance.

Selfportrait

Every now and then I love to make a selportrait. I painted my last selfportrait in 2006 and it's not really up to date anymore. I did lose quite some weight last year, so it was time to paint another one. Here's how I look in 2007, still looking good and still a thinker!

The Snackbar

When I was invited by Anker & Anker to show my paintings at our municipal theatre De Harmonie earlier this year, I packed my paintings and jumped on my bike to bring them over. While riding my bike carrying 10 larger sized paintings across Leeuwarden I suddenly remembered I have a driver liscense nowadays. Anyway, on my way over I saw this empty snackbar near our municipal theatre. I stopped and thought: 'I have to paint this someday!' Well I finally did. I just love the whole atmosfere of the painting. There's nobody there, but it still seems there's something about to go down.

The Telephone

Almost everybody has a mobile phone nowadays, but this painting could only work with a public phone. Luckily those are still around too. I wanted to create a painting full of suspense and I think I did a good job here. It looks like the phone could ring any minute from now and you’re just happen to be around to pick it up and answer the call.

Last week I finished painting the commission by the Leeuwarder Courant for their Christmas Special. The people at the largest newspaper in my region were excited about ‘The Exception‘ as the painting is titled. Unfortunately you guys have to wait to see it due the publicist rights. High quality reproductions, giclées as they call it, of this painting will be available soon in a limited edition of just 100. Today me and reporter Sietse Singelsma went to Art Revisited, the company which will make these giclées. We had the grand tour around the company and it was really interesting to find out how giclées are made. I would like to thank everybody at Art Revisited and I cannot wait to see the giclée of my own painting!
