15.9.08American Bookstore
What a weekend it has been! Last friday my one man show opened at Galerie van den Berg. There was a nice crowd and I enjoyed talking to everybody. The art really looks good hanging on the walls and I got many good responses from everybody. I would like to thank you all for your kind words! After the opening I went to another party some friends of mine were throwing to celebrate, It was very late before I went home, I can tell you that.
I keep it in the bookstores with todays painting. Edward Hopper once said that is quite difficult to paint indoors and outdoors at the same time. While painting this one I found out that he's right, but it isn't impossible. The painting is situated at the American Bookstore at De Spui in Amsterdam. kind regards, Gerard Boersma

25.8.08The Bus-Stop
Today painting is slightly reminiscent of a painting called The Bus I did earlier this year. That painting showed the front of the bus, I now concentrated on the back of it with two men waiting for their bus to show up. I can tell you it was quite difficult to get all the reflections in the window just right, but I think I managed it quite well.

10.7.08The Bull
While I visited the Kunsthalle in Hamburg a while ago there was some kind of art class going on. The woman on my painting participated in this class and is trying to copy a painting by Felix Vallotton.
This painting The Abduction of Europe has a mythological theme. The naked lady is Europe who's been seduced by Zeus transformed into a bull. As the story goes he dragged Europe into the sea and brought her to Crete where she became the first queen of that island. Ultimately the whole continent got named after her. I don't know if the woman on my painting finished her version of the painting, but of course I did so. I love the blue and purple colours, it makes the painting by Vallotton really pop out. kind regards, Gerard Boersma 
5.7.08Up High
If you have been following my blog you might remember my painting called 'Nude'. On this piece a woman was looking at a painting by Felix Vallotton in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg. I promised you a little series about this relatively unknown painter and today I finally live up to that promise. The unusual panel size follows the unusual hanging of the painting, but it works quite well!

12.6.08The Show-Case
A bit similar to yesterdays painting, although today the figures aren't looking at a shopwindow but at a show-case in a museum. The Princessehof museum for ceramics in my hometown to be exact. If you look closely you can see some ceramics through all the refelctions of the window opposite. It almost makes the painting abstract, I love the effects of it.
I told you recently that I've got a show coming up in Amsterdam. Well, that's way sooner than I thought. The grand opening is saturday 21st of june at 17.00 h. The show will feature some great realist artists and is held at the Amstel Church, Amstelveld 10 in Amsterdam. Because this is a special location the exhibition only last for one week, so make sure you don't miss it! kind regards, Gerard Boersma 
6.6.08Sushi
This could easily be a painting from my Japanese series, but it's not. This Sushi bar is actually situated in Hamburg. I never used to be a big fish eater, but that changed last year. Me and my girlfriend were cooking some meatloaf when suddenly I had it up to here with that grey and greasy stuff. Right there and then we decided to eat more fish. Now I'm used to it and I'm finally enjoying it, especially sushi. I guess I got taste now!

3.6.08The Soup
As promised todays painting has my usual size of 6" x 6" or 15 cm x 15 cm. We're back in the musuem again. On the painting you see a couple looking at the worldfamous Campbell soup cans by Andy Warhol. The scene is taken from a visit to the Kunsthalle in Hamburg.

1.6.08The Call
Inspired by yesterdays painting of a man placing a telephone call late at night, todays painting The Call also shows somebody in a phonebooth at night. The phonebooth is now located in my hometown Leeuwarden near the trainstation. The painting has the same meaning as The Distance. I sure hope you enjoy this painting as much as I did painting it!

19.4.08The Doors
The subway is one of my favourite things to paint, especially the one in New York. On my painting you see the train about to close its doors and ready to leave. If you look closely you can see a couple of people standing in the train. I wish you could see it in real life, the painting has many subtle brushwork, which you somehow cannot see now. I really enjoyed painting this one and I sure do hope you share my enthousiasm!
In other news, I'm going away this friday for a short springbreak. Me and my girlfriend are going to spend some time in Hamburg, Germany. Besides that there are a lot of festivities coming up here, including my dad's birthday. If you have been following my blog you know what that means. 14.4.08Delicate
It is said that the best way to describe the art by Jan Mankes is as delictate. For those who never heard of him, Mankes was a Dutch realist painter who lived from 1889 till 1920. He's quite underrated, but fortunately he's coming back into fashion lately. On my painting you see his selfportrait. The scene spoke to me, because of the different directions my figures are looking.

30.3.08The Exit
I don't know what it is, but I always love to paint people in public spaces. This time I went for a scene in the New York subway, 57 street to be exact. Two people are waiting for their train to show up. I had great fun with the contrast between the reds and the greens which I feel work really well here.

29.3.08The Sunflowers
Just because it is saturday I got a larger sized painting for you. As you can see it is from my series of paintings about people in museums. The two man are looking at the famous painting 'Sunflowers' by Van Gogh. Of course this painting belongs to the permanent collection of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. As a painter I cannot get enough of these museum scenes, they're so much fun to do. I hope you share my enthousiasm!

27.3.08The Crows
No strange things happening in my studio today, but I do got this great museum scene with one of the eeriest paintings by Van Gogh. 'Wheatfield with Crows' is my personal favourite and probably the one most subject to speculation. It was executed in July 1890, in the last weeks of Van Gogh’s life. To me the dramatic, cloudy sky filled with crows and the cut-off path symbolizes his psyche at the time. You could see them as signs of his coming end and many claimed it was his last painting. However there's no real proof for it. Fortunately my figures are in a completely differtent state of mind and are simply enjoying themselves!

23.3.08The Ladder
Happy Eastern! I've had about enough eggs for today and decided to paint something that has nothing to do with eastern at all. On the painting you see two fellows standing on a ladder in front of the Holland Casino in Amsterdam. They're not cleaning the windows, but are fixing some problem with the sign.

Last years painting 'Narcissus' of a man working out in the gym inspired me for todays painting. The woman is standing on one of those walking machines. I guess it's hard work trying to look good. I'm not a sportsman myself, but I do like to paint it. It's way easier.

17.3.08The Clothing Store, a painting every single day
As I told you recently I just became a new member of the Daily Painters Gallery. Likewise my new studio it really inspires me and I decided to become a real daily painter. This means that from now on I will post a new painting every single day. Yes, every single day, including the weekends!

15.3.08The Museum
I could easily get addicted to making these paintings about people in museums. They're so much fun to do! First of all it's great to paint people who are looking at something beautiful and if I did a good job later on people in real life are doing exactly the same thing. Also the lighting in museums is just magnificant and I get to copy some of the greatest artists ever lived, which makes me a better painter I believe.
Todays painting is taken from a visit to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. The people are looking at a painting by Millais. Friends from Amsterdam bought it on the spot alongside The Generations, but I defenitely wanted to share it with you all. More to come! kind regards, Gerard Boersma
