In the Hamburger Kunsthalle I saw this guy trying to make a drawing of the lovely paintings displayed by Felix Valloton. There actually was a whole class scattered over the exhibition making drawings, but this guy caught my eye because of his red shirt against the red in the painting. It works quite well.
Have a great weekend!
kind regards, Gerard Boersma

I really have a lot of inspiration in making these paintings of people looking at art lately. On my painting you see a lady looking the other way while it looks like the young girl on the painting is trying to grab her attention. I thought it was a great motif for todays painting. kind regards, Gerard Boersma Attention G. Boersma acrylics on masonite 6" x 6", 15 x 15 cm 2008 SOLD

This may come as a surprise to you, but even though I'm a realist I'm still a huge fan of expressionism. I love the loose brushstrokes, the intense colours and well, just the way those artist express themselves. I could never paint like that, it just doesn't feel right to do myself. Anyway, the woman on my painting is looking at a painting by Kirchner in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg.

While painting todays painting I thought the horses could storm at me any minute from now, that's why I entitled this piece The Storm. If those horses were real I sure wouldn't want to stand where this lovely lady on my painting stands. The painting she's looking at is by Renoir and is called 'A Morning Ride in the Bois de Boulogne'. You can see it in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg. kind regards, Gerard Boersma The Storm G. I've been busy painting still lifes these last few days, but as I said I didn't give up painting humans at all as todays painting clealry demonstrates. I love how the figures are sitting/ standing in a circle. They connected to each other, but are still enjoying art in their own way. The lovely painting on the back is by Felix Vallotton as seen in the Hamburger Kunsthalle. In other news my birthday is coming up this friday and I got a special action in the decks! While I visited the Kunsthalle in Hamburg a while ago there was some kind of art class going on. The woman on my painting participated in this class and is trying to copy a painting by Felix Vallotton. This painting The Abduction of Europe has a mythological theme. The naked lady is Europe who's been seduced by Zeus transformed into a bull. As the story goes he dragged Europe into the sea and brought her to Crete where she became the first queen of that island. Ultimately the whole continent got named after her. I don't know if the woman on my painting finished her version of the painting, but of course I did so. I love the blue and purple colours, it makes the painting by Vallotton really pop out. kind regards, Gerard Boersma The Bull G. Boersma acrylics on masonite 9.9" x 8.7", 25,2 x 22 cm 2008

If you have been following my blog you might remember my painting called 'Nude'. On this piece a woman was looking at a painting by Felix Vallotton in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg. I promised you a little series about this relatively unknown painter and today I finally live up to that promise. The unusual panel size follows the unusual hanging of the painting, but it works quite well! kind regards, Gerard Boersma Up High G. Boersma acrylics on masonite 9" x 6.1", 23 x 15,5 cm 2008 SOLD

Right opposite of the Kunsthalle I saw this lady enjoying the view. That day a marathon was going on and all the runners were just passing by below. Can you imagine people running 42 kilometres just for fun? That's quite an achievement and I got great respect for that. I tried running myself once after quitting playing soccer. That was not a succes, I immediately thought: 'Why am I doing this again?' So I soon quite sports alltogether and got serious about painting. That's quite an achievement too, isn't it?

This could easily be a painting from my Japanese series, but it's not. This Sushi bar is actually situated in Hamburg. I never used to be a big fish eater, but that changed last year. Me and my girlfriend were cooking some meatloaf when suddenly I had it up to here with that grey and greasy stuff. Right there and then we decided to eat more fish. Now I'm used to it and I'm finally enjoying it, especially sushi. I guess I got taste now! kind regards, Gerard Boersma Sushi G. Boersma acrylics on masonite 6" x 6", 15 x 15 cm 2008

In the Kunsthalle in Hamburg I visited an exhibition showing the works of Felix Vallotton. I hadn't heard of him before I must admit, but that guy sure can paint! This French painter was closely associated with the Nabis group, which also included artists like Pierre Bonnard and Eduard Vuilard amongst others. In his day and age, late 19th and early 20th century, his painting were thought of as highly provocatve, because of the many nudes and unsettling way of how he painted them. His paintings seem cool and controlled, leaving out details which makes his art so unsettling. I will make a little series of this great painter, starting of with todays painting 'Nude". kind regards, Gerard Boersma Nude G. Boersma acrylics on masonite 6" x 6", 15 x 15 cm 2008

Just two days to go before my open studio takes place! I'm really looking forward to that. All the pieces are framed and I know exactly where to hang them. There's a lot to see too, no less than 32 paintings! Tomorrow I will post a link to a survey of all of them complete with my personal comments. Among them is todays painting The Iceberg. In the Kunsthalle in Hamburg hangs this masterpiece of a shipwreck by Casper David Friedrich. The ship itself is covered by the man, but you sure can see the great ice landscape. I just had to paint that! I hope to welcome you as a guest this weekend! kind regards, Gerard Boersma The Iceberg G. Boersma acrylics on masonite 13.8" x 12", 35 x 30,6 cm 2008

It was a hard day at the studio, the heat is just not going away. It's sweaty and I decided to work tropical hours, early start and early finish if possible. Still it was a good day for painting. I worked on this scene from the Hamburger Kunsthalle. A woman is looking at a painting which we cannot see, the one we do see is I believe by impressionist Corot, although the image is hardly recognizable. In this case I wasn't really interested in the art displayed, but more in the act of observing and the whole scenery. I especially liked the stairs. In other news, I'm framing artwork for my upcoming open studio. The small paintings even look better when framed, I'm defenitely satisfied with that. I'm thinking about offering the frames as an option for my blog paintings. This week I'm also putting some never before seen larger sized paintings online as well. These paintings will be shown at my open studio on 24th and 25th of may. A survey of all the paintings for my little exhibition will be online just before my open studio. Of course I let you when exactly! kind regards, Gerard Boersma The Stairs G. Boersma acrylics on masonite 6" x 6", 15 x 15 cm 2008

It's sooo hot here, my paint is almost dry before I can put it on my panel. It's kind of difficult to paint with this weather, but I still managed to make this scene from the Hamburger Kunsthalle. One of the nicest paintings in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg is 'Wanderer above a sea of fog' by Casper David Friedrich. This painter is one of the icons of the German Romantic movement and best known for his allegorical landscapes. His works are often symbolic and convey the spiritual experiences of life. Like I said yesterday, I really enjoyed my visit to the Kunsthalle in Hamburg. In this great museum there hangs this painting called 'Girls on a Bridge' by Edward Munch which I really love. For me Munch is the painter of human emotion, there's hardly any painter who can top him at that. He didn't lead an easy life, it was full of deaths and that shows in his paintings. On mine the figure is somewhat reminiscent of Munch, that's one of the reasons I called it The Bridge. kind regards, Gerard Boersma The Bridge G.
