Knowledge - Painting Of Man In Bookstore

Yes I told you yesterday I'm concentrating on larger sized work, but that doesn't mean I completely overlook my beloved dailies. Today I got this great scene from a local bookstore for you. A man is willing to expand his knowledge and is there a better way to that then by picking up a book? I especially like the wall of books behind him. It's almost abstract, but then again it's completely the opposite.

Jewelry

In the Magna Plaza in Amsterdam I saw this couple looking for some jewelry. I love the red color in the background. Usually it is a bad idea to use such a strong color in the background, but somehow it works out great here. It gives the painting a great atmosphere.

Sweeper- Man cleaning in front of restaurant 6 x 6"

Yesterday Omrop Fryslan dropped by to film and interview me about the LA Art Show. The item airs this sunday at 17.30h and is repeated every hour all sunday evening. The item shows new footage combined with old footage from the New York-documentary. I cannot wait to see it! After the filming I had to bring my paintings to Joure where I show my work at the Gemeentehuis Skasterlan from dec 6 - feb 1.

So I had a busy day yesterday and it felt really good to back in my studio again for some painting. Although it only has been a couple of days I felt it was long overdue. On todays painting you see a nice old fellow sweeping the tiles in front of his restaurant. I just love the lighting, it makes lovely deep shadows, I'm especially fond of the red on the left. I believe the restaurant is ltalian. In any case it's located at the Utrechtsestraat in Amsterdam, very near Gallery Rudolfv where I showed my last month.

The Ikea - Man looking for 'art' at Ikea store 6" x 6"

A man is looking for some 'art' at the Ikea-store. Of course the art he's looking at isn't real art, they're just prints on canvas not even limited in edition. Thousands of the same image are in circulation and many have them in their homes. To be honest with you I cannot stand these type of images. Ah well, what can you do about it? Not much, but I sure can make a painting of just that and that's what I did. Hope you enjoy it!

Alligator - Painting of woman looking at art 6 x 6"

You might be wondering why todays painting is entitled 'Alligator'. Well, if you look closely on the painting the woman is looking at you see a naked man fighting of an alligator, while an young lady is looking at the scene. This lovely painting is by Felix Vallotton as seen in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg.

Today I also got some very good news! I cannot say much about it for now, I wish I could, but it has something to do with an artfair and believe me it's huge! More info soon!

Surfing - Painting of woman behind computer 6 x 6"

Last week the Noordelijk Filmfestival took place in my hometown Leeuwarden. The festival is about movies, movies and more movies. Usually they show alternative movies, you know those which aren't made in Hollywood, but this year there were a lot of documentaries too. I visited the festival last saturday and I saw a real bad one. Luckily I also saw this scene of a lady taking a break from the movies and checking the internet. She traded the big screen for a smalller one.

As you probably know already I auction my paintings here on my blog, but I decided to run them a little bit longer than one day. Starting now the auction will last for a week.

I'm back! I had a nice slow week after my open studio. Well slow isn't really the word for it, all I had was a break from my daily paintings. I worked on a larger scale painting all week. It's nearing completion and with a bit of luck I can show it to you this week. It's been a while since I last worked a whole week on just one painting, it felt really good, but after just a couple of days I started to miss my daily paintings and I'm more than happy to start again.

On todays painting you see a couple of muslim women waiting for the tram to show up at the Central Station in Amsterdam. One of the women is wearing a burka. She's also carrying a shopping bag which says Dirk. This is the name of a well-known chain of supermarkets in The Netherlands. It hardly gets more Dutch than that. I thought the contrast with the muslim women is quite interesting.

While working on the larger scale painting last week I also had some time to re-think my weblog. I decided to go at it a little different than you're used to. 3rd Ave

On todays painting you see a man reading on the subway station of 3rd Ave in New York. Like my previous daily painting 23rd Street you see the scene from the platform across. I love this view through the heavy beams. Although the composition is quite simple, it works quite well!

I'm still preparing for my open studio this weekend. I still have to clean out my studio and hang the art so everything is top notch. I'm planning to do this and a bunch of other chores tomorrow. I think I'll need the whole day for it, so no painting this friday, but I will be back soon!

The Wall

You are probably wondering why the man on the painting is staring at a wall. Well, the wall is a vending machine. After inserting your coin you can open a little window to get some kind of snack. When lucky the snack is steaming hot, when you ran fresh out of luck the snack is not edible at all. It's worth a try though!

The Wall will be shown at my open studio this weekend, which I'm really looking forward to. As for now I'm busy preparing, you know figuring out what to show, framing and many other little things that need to be taking care of. It's taking shape as we speak and I cannot wait to greet my guests!

Onlooker

Another great scene from the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels. To be honest, I haven't got the slightest idea which artist painted this, but it sure looks great. I'm not sure if you can see it, but the painting shows a couple of men hard at work in a factory. They're pulling on something big and it doesn't look like a pleasant job. The woman who's looking at the scene is way better off, all she has to do is sit back and enjoy. I sure hope you do the same!

Lexington Ave

I had so much fun painting the subways scenes again that I couldn't resist the temptation to paint another one. This one was a little tricky, because of the amount of detail involved. I'm particular fond of the shiny floor, although the picture really doesn't do it any justice. You just have to take my word for it I guess. Anyway I hope you enjoy this painting as much as I did painting it!

In other news an article about the studio complex I work in appeared in the Leeuwarder Courant this week. I haven't read it myself yet, but I know it's accompied with a nice picture of me working on yesterdays painting The Call. As soon as I get my hands on a copy of it I let you know!

Cow

The larger sized painting I talked about yesterday will have to wait for monday I'm afraid, there are still a few things that need some work. 23rd Street

This is one of the stations I traveled to from yesterdays subway station. Of course there were others as well, but this one caught my eye because of the arrangement of the people. The view from the platform across trough all the black beams make the scene complete for me.

Besides my daily painting I just completed a larger size one as well today. Well that is to say I think I did. I'm going to do the overnight test, you know let it rest for a while and then see if there's any adjusting to do. It's a great scene with children, but you see that soon enough!

Houston Street

The first time I visited New York I stayed in a lovely loft on Houston Street. From there I explored the city either by foot or the subway. Todays painting shows the subway station I often took. The scene spoke to me because of the strong perspective and the train heading towards you. I wish you could see it for real, the painting is way more detailed than the picture.

The Library

The Nose

Rembrandt once said that a painting is there to look at, not to smell it, meaning a painting is best viewed at a small distance. Somehow like the man on my painting I always love to take a close look myself. Studying the techniques and brushwork can be very illuminating.
