Killah - painting of shopwindow at night

It feels real good to be fully concentrating on larger scaled paintings once again. There's no stress of finding any new subjects to paint for the day, no deadlines and above all I can go all out with the details, which I absolutely love.

This past week I painted Killah, a painting showing a shopwindow of a clothing store at night. I thought the name of the store was quite odd, Killah is slang for Killer if I understand American slang correctly. I remember standing in front of the shopwindow wondering about this, when I saw that the dummies were already killed so to speak. They all lost their heads, but at least they still looked nice.

This saturday my solo-show at Artemisia will open. Today we decorated the gallery and it really turned out great. A sneak preview of the show can be seen on the website of Artemisia. The show will be opened this saturday at 16.00 h (4 pm) by Peter de Haan, editor of the book Famous Frisians in America. I'm looking forward to the show and I hope to greet you as my guest!

Night Train

Something completely different than Obama, but more up my alley I guess. One evening I took a stroll down to the trainstation here in Leeuwarden. I saw a train ready to departure with a beautiful view trhough the windows of the car. Just had to paint that!

Central Station - painting of central station at night

I still travel by train every now and then. Recently I came back late at night from a trip to Groningen. Usually the central station is quite busy, but at night there's hardly anyone. It makes the place look a little bit eerie, but still comfortable to me, because I was almost home. Todays painting gives a good sense of what I felt when I stepped out of the train.

The opening last saturday of the show Nieuwe Uitleenschatten in Groningen was huge succes. Although it was really warm that day a lot, and I mean a lot, of people showed up. The show itself was a pleasure to visit, great selection of work by great artists. If you haven't seen the show yet, you can do so until aug 28.

Crossing - woman crossing a street at night in New York

After concentrating on medium and larger sized work for a while I started to miss my little daily paintings. I now return to my 'dailies', which means more frequent updates. Crossing is the first one. On the painting you see a woman crossing a street in New York. She's the only one who wants to go to the other side of the street, a rare thing in New York I guess. To me it's also symbolic for choosing your own path. The woman doesn't walk on the far end of the crossing by accident, she has chosen it.

In other news, tomorrow about ten of my paintings will go to Groningen for a groupshow in Der Aa Kerk. This former church is located in downtown Groningen and is now used for all kinds of social and cultural activities. In association with SBK Amsterdam and CBK Groningen my paintings will be shown there from aug 14 untill aug 27. The official opening will take place on aug 15 at 16.00 hours. I would be honoured if you could join the festivities!

Head-Lights - painting of yellow cab New York

It's so hot in my studio! The paint is drying before I even can mix it properly. It's one of those days I wished I was a plein air painter. Ah well, I just keep going at it and besides I got a small break coming up this weekend starting tomorrow. In any case I finally made the larger sized version of Head-Lights. It seems I'm heavy on the cabs these days!

Times Square

Another great night scene in New York. This time the painting is situated at Times Square. The paintings shows a little bit more buildings than usual, but that's because the whole place is heavy lightened, which is a blast to paint. I painted this one with my upcoming show in New York in mind. At this point I'm not sure which ones to bring so we'll see how that goes.

The Head-Lights

Like I said yesterday, I tried to get a cab over and over again. This one didn't stop either. I bought a metrocard on the spot and went for the subway. Despite my bad experiences with cabs I still had great fun painting this, especially the lights are always a pleasure.

It's museum-weekend, which means a lot of museums in the Netherlands are open for free this saturday and sunday. Today I went to the museum of my relative Jopie Huisman with my father and mother. Walking through the museum brought back a lot of memories to my dad. I heard stories I haven't heard before. It's also very strange that so many visitors come to see the portraits by Jopie of my great grandfather and mother. It makes me very proud and I think there are a couple of paintings coming up situated at the Jopie Huisman Museum.

The Call

In 2005 I showed my work at Galerie Rudolfv in Amsterdam. The gallery now celebrates its tenth anniversary and they invited all their artists to participate in a huge group show which is held from oct 18 - nov 29. The show opens on oct 18 at 5 pm (17:00h). Of course I'm participating in this special show and I think todays painting is the one I'm sending in. The painting is the larger sized version of The Call I did earlier this year on 10 x 10 cm (4" x 4")panel. I love the theme and I think it's a great contribution to the show.

The Textmessage

No new painting today, I've been working very hard on a commisioned portrait. It's going really well, but unfortunately I cannot tell you who commisioned it, it will spoill the surprise when the portraited person receives the painting. Of course I will post it as soon as I can, probably by the end of september. So no new painting, but I do got this lovely larger sized painting for you today.

The Walk

Crossing a road can be a dangerous thing. You just might get run over by a bus or like the man on my painting by a yellow cab. But at times you just have to cross the road and take the risk, otherwise you just ain't going anywhere. I for one would be more comfortable riding the cab though.

Summer is here and everybody is enjoying the weather. I noticed things are going a bit slower than usual because of this. I therefore decided to take the opportunity to start working on some larger sized paintings as well. Since I started this blog back in september last year I feel I haven't adressed to that enough and now it's a perfect time to do just that. As you understand larger paintngs take longer to finish, so I won't be posting daily for the time being. Don't worry it is still my aim to post at least 3 paintings a week, including larger and smaller sized paintings.

Hot Dog

Okay, okay I told you that I wouldn't post any real small paintings for a while, but I really couldn't resist the temptation to paint this one. I hope you can forgive me! On the painting you see a man selling hot dogs at night in New York. It's a rough job I guess, but a very honest one too.

In other news I completed working on my book and it's off to the printer. If everything goes as planned I should receive my copy at the end of this week. I'm really looking forward to that! Tomorrow I post a painting of my usual size of 15 x 15 cm, I promise!

Inspired by yesterdays painting of a man placing a telephone call late at night, todays painting The Call also shows somebody in a phonebooth at night. The Distance

Late in the evening a man is making a telephone call to his loved ones far away. It's the call you make to hear if everything is alright or when you just want to hear somebody's voice. For some reason there's this distance between you and them, but luckily there's this little machine called a telephone.

Change

I just love painting these night scenes, they're so much fun to do. The lighting gets me everytime. Why I entitled this piece Change I totally leave that to your imagination this time.

Besides painting I'm preparing for my open studio on may 24th and 25th. Everything goes as planned, but I still got some work to do. As a matter of fact I get right on it now, have a nice evening!
