Coffee Bar In Agrigento G. Boersma Last year I visited Agrigento on the island of Sicily in Italy for the first time. I stayed at the bed and breakfast Luna Kina run by my friend Giovanni who also happens to collect my work. Giovanni was kind enough to show me around the whole week I was there. I recently made a few studies of people enjoying works of art by Alphonse Mucha. I settled on making this larger piece of a man enjoying his painting entitled 'Reverie' which means 'dreaming'. Alphonse Mucha was a Czech painter and decorative artist best known for his distinct Art Nouveau or Jugendstil style, an art movement that was most popular between 1890 and 1910. Mucha produced many paintings, illustrations, advertisements, postcards, and designs. Art Nouveau means New Art and was a reaction to the academic art of the 19th century. It was inspired by Celtic art and natural forms and structures, particularly the curved lines of plants and flowers The painting my figure is enjoying is a clear example. Ikea painting of a woman and man looking for 'art' in Ikea store G. Boersma In an Ikea store painting of I saw a woman and a man looking for so-called paintings. Of course the art they're looking at isn't real art, these are just prints on canvas not even limited in edition. Thousands of the same image are in circulation and many have them in their homes. I thought it would be interesting to paint those images as a way to elevate them to real art. With Ikea I want to raise questions about consumerism and of course just make an image that's beautiful to look at too. In The Car G. Boersma The woman on my painting is enjoying In The Car by Roy Lichtenstein in a museum. In The Car is one of a series from the early 1960s in which Lichtenstein deals with the theme of romance. Lichtenstein would paint his pop art works on a monumental scale, much enlarged from his original source material of comic-strip illustrations. His paintings present archetypal images of contemporary America, simultaneously glamorous, mundane, dramatic and impersonal. 7.6.18Waste Of Time- Painting Of My Brother Lying On The Couch At My Parent's House To Watch Some TV
Waste Of Time G. Boersma One night, I believe it was Christmas eve, I saw my brother lying on the coach at my parent's house to watch some television. I grabbed my camera, took a pic which I later used as a reference for this painting. If you look closely you see a lamp, a donkey and a dog sitting on top of the tv. My parents actually had those things there. To me the lamp symbolizes enlightenment. That's the relief you think you get from watching tv. In reality it's a burden to watch, represented by the donkey. But you faithfully keep on watching anyway. This faith is symbolized by the dog. New York Movie G. Boersma SOLD A movie theater is a place where you can escape for a few hours into a different world. The usherette in Hopper's painting probably has seen the movie a thousand times and just waits for its ending. In the meantime she leans against the wall reflecting her own thoughts. 5.6.18Op Art- Painting Of Woman Enjoying Painting By Victor Vasarely
Op Art G. Boersma After quite a few studies I finally settled on this compostion of a woman enjoying a painting by Victor Vasarely. He was a French-Hungarian artist credited as the father of the Op Art movement, short for Optical Art. Utilizing geometric shapes and colorful graphics, the artist created compelling illusions of spatial depth, as seen in this work my figure is enjoying in a museum. Painting Op Art is quite an experience. The checker board kept dancing before my eyes and I had to take regular breaks to rub my eyes a bit! I like how the painting is almost entirely black and white with just a few dashes of color here and there on the figure.
