On my painting you see a man waiting for his order at kabobery Massis Kabob in Los Angeles. As a painter I'm interested in these small moments we usually don't think much about. To me they say a whole lot about todays society and the way we interact.

The Garden - woman looking at Monet

I haven't made a museum scene in a while now and just felt like painting one today. On the painting you see a woman looking at a painting by Monet. Not sure about the title of Monets painting, but it's one of his famous series of paintings of his garden. The scene takes place in the Getty Center in LA.

In other news, I got a special day coming up tomorrow. Tomorrow I wll be having breakfast with some of the most prominent figures in my region at the Fries Museum. This all has to do with a book called Famous Frisians in America which also features me. This book will be presented tomorrow in my hometown and in New York on sept 12. If you wish to learn more about the book please click here for detailed information.

Break - man looking at Millet

Today I finished the larger sized version of Break. On the painting you see a man looking at Man with a hoe by Millet. The man on Millets' painting is taking a rest of his hard labour on the land. Obviously my figure didn't have to work that hard today, he's enjoying a visit to the Getty Center, but still he's taking a rest as well.

Bubba Gump - Shrimp Fish Store Santa Monica Pier

I could enter my studio easily! Today I got a scene for you on the Santa Monica Pier. On the painting you see a woman in front of a shrimp fish store called Bubba Gump. Well I'm not sure if that's name of the store, but Bubba Gump is defenitely the name of the shrimp brand. I loved hanging around the pier, looking at the sea, hearing it roar and all the fishermen trying to catch something. Quite a relaxing atmosphere.

I'm off to see the artists performing right in front of my studio, I can feel the bass already pumping!

Verizon - street scene Santa Monica Promenade

I completed the commissioned painting I was talking about last week! It turned out great, but unfortunately I cannot show it to you yet, the painting is a surprise gift.

But I do have Verizon to show you. The painting is a street scene I witnessed at the Santa Monica Promenade in Los Angeles. I think it's my favourite street there. I love the colors and shadows of the telephone booth by Verizon, after which I entitled the painting.

In other news, tomorrow we celebrate Liberation Day in the Netherlands. A lot of artists perform during the festivities and I think they're performing right next to my studio. At this moment some guys are putting fences around my building. I was planning to paint tomorrow, but right now I'm not sure if I can even enter my studio at all. We'll see how that goes!

Escalator

In downtown Los Angeles I hung around the Ernst and Young Plaza for a while. The plaza is almost like a big hole in the ground, but it's nice to visit though. A lot of business men and woman grab a bite there during lunchtime at one of the many lunchrooms. The way to get there is by one of many escalators. On one of them I spotted this young lady, going up to leave again. I thought it would make a lovely theme for todays painting.

Entombment - museum tour in Getty Center in front of Rubens

Yesterday I completed this larger sized painting of a tour right in front of a couple of paintings by Peter Paul Rubens in the Getty Center in Los Angeles. I wanted it to show you show the painting then, but I couldn't get a good picture, I'm still not completely satisfied with it, but it will do.

In any case the painting is just perfect for Eastern, because the tourguide is talking about Rubens painting Entombment from about 1612. The painting depicts the moment after the Crucifixion and before the Resurrection when Christ is placed into the tomb. The Entombment was meant to make the viewer's religious experience personal and encourage the faithful to imagine the physical horror of Christ's Crucifixion. The painting left shows a small part of Rubens The Calydonian Boar Hunt from about the same year as Entombment.

While painting I suddenly realized that I was competing against one of the great masters of the past. I just had to get the paintings right or else my whole painting would fail. This made me a little nervous I can tell you, but the part which eventually gave me the most trouble was the green background. Go figure, not having any troubles with the Rubens, but with the plain backgrond! In any case I'm really satisfied with the results and feel it's one of the best paintings from my museum series yet. Happy Eastern!

Impression - woman looking at Monet

In the Getty Center in LA they have a marvelous collection of impressionist paintings. All the big names are there from Degas to Monet, where the lady on my painting is looking at. I'm not sure what the title is of this Monet, but it's the one with the cathedral bathing in light.

Macbook

I'm a big fan of Apple computers. I cannot help it, I like the way they look and how they're so easy to use. No wonder that when I was walking on the Santa Monica Promenade I just had to visit the Apple Store there. It was a blessing to actually walk in LA, you hardly can do that anywhere without cars racing down the street, Well anyway, inside the store I saw this man checking out the latest models of the Macbook.

This is not a Magritte

In the Getty Center in Los Angeles I saw this woman admiring the famous painting Treachery of Images by Magritte. Beneath the pipe he wrote Ceci n'est pas une pipe meaing this is not a pipe. Of course the painting shows a pipe, but it's true though. It's not a real pipe, it's an image of a pipe. Well actually, on my painting it's an image of an image of pipe. That's why I entitled the painting 'This is not a Magritte'.
