In Morning Sun, the woman - modeled after Hopper's wife, Jo - faces the sun impassively and she seems to be lost in thought. The bare wall and the elevation of the room above the street also suggest the bleakness and solitude of impersonal urban life. Then again she could just quietly enjoy the morning sun.

The figure looking at her comes prepared for a different type of weather as he is holding a folding umbrella.

Early Sunday Morning is one of Edward Hopper’s most iconic paintings. The painting portrays the small businesses and shops of Seventh Avenue in New York City shortly after sunrise. It shows a blue sky over a long, red building. A barber pole sits in front of one of the doorways and there's not a human soul in sight.

The long, early morning shadows and the succession of verticals and horizontals, create the charged, almost theatrical, atmosphere of an unpopulated street at the beginning of the day. I'm sure a crowd will appear soon, but for now all is quiet and peaceful.

Room In New York is painting by Edward Hopper that portrays two individuals in a New York City flat.

It is said to have been inspired by the glimpses of lighted interiors seen by the artist near the district where he lived in Washington Square.

The scene of a brightly lit room is contained within the dark sill of a window. The stark framing makes the room the main focus, drawing the eye and giving realness to the action of peeping into a space where the subjects are unaware they are being watched. But of course the whole scene is just a painting hanging in a museum.

Attending to private affairs in her apartment, the anonymous woman in Night Windows is unaware of any viewer's gaze. The composition of three windows allows for a dramatic setting of illuminated interior against dark night. The painting exposes the voyeuristic opportunities of the modern American city and the contradiction it offers between access to the intimate lives of strangers and urban loneliness and isolation.

One of the best-known images of twentieth-century art has to be Edward Hopper's Nighthawks. The painting depicts an all-night diner in which three customers are all lost in their own thoughts. They all seem as separate and remote from the viewer as they are from one another.

I love how Hopper has eliminated any reference to an entrance. The viewer is drawn to the light, but is shut out from the scene by a seamless wedge of glass.

Hopper denied that he purposefully infused this or any other of his paintings with symbols of human isolation and urban emptiness, but he acknowledged that in Nighthawks 'unconsciously, probably, I was painting the loneliness of a large city.'

Whether he did or not this painting is an all time favorite of mine and just perfect for my ongoing series of people in museums.

On todays painting you see 2 figures looking at Italian Quarter, Gloucester by Edward Hopper from 1912 as seen in Kunsthal Rotterdam were the paintings were shown on loan from the Whitney earlier this year. I like how the painting almost looks like a window and gives you this view to another world behind the yellowish wall. As a longtime fan of Hoppers work it's just great to have him included in my ongoing series about people admiring art in museums. The painting on the left is by Hopper as well.

In other news I started to work on a large auctionhouse painting. Don't want to tell you too much about it yet, but it's situated at Christie's and shows workers taking telephone bids. The painting is 35.6" x 27.6" or 90,3 x 70 cm in size so it takes sometime to complete. If I'm not posting for a while you know why.

Art Chicago is coming up by the end of this month. As always I'm represented by Amstel Gallery, it's going to be a great show and I'm really looking forward to it! More info soon!

As I said yesterday I was glad to visit the show Modern Life with works by Edward Hopper and his peers. Hopper has always been a great influence to me as a painter and it's always a pleasure to see his works in real life.

On todays work you see a man looking or rather looking away from Hoppers South Carolina Morning. As Hopper figures usually lacked any communication I thought it would be great to do the same with my figure. He's looking in another direction as well. Hopper influenced me greatly, but on a whole other level the title Other Direction also stands for me choosing my own path.

At the latest moment possible I heard the Kunsthal in Rotterdam showed for the very first time ever works by Edward Hopper within the context of their time. Eight top pieces by Hopper from the collection of Whitney Museum of Modern Art were shown together with works by famous artists like Georgia O'Keeffe, Ralph Soyer, Reginald Marsh, Charles Sheeler amongst others.

I visited the show on its closing day and I'm glad I did so. Hopper has always been one of my alltime favourite artists and I'm just happy his Railroad Station is now part of my ongoing series of works about people looking at art in museums.
