Sometimes I experiment a little. This is a painting of a wall where a cross used to hang. The wall has yellowed a bit and the nail is still there.

It's a bit of oddment within my oeuvre, but I sure love the symbolism in this piece.

Taking Of Christ- Painting Of Man Enjoying Two Paintings By Caravaggio

Taking Of Christ
painting of a man enjoying two paintings by Caravaggio

G. Boersma
acrylic on masonite
±47 1/4" x 29" or 120 x 74 cm
2024

SOLD

Caravaggio's dramatic painting The Taking of Christ depicts the events of the night of Holy Thursday. Judas has identified Christ with a kiss, and the temple guards move to make their arrest as another disciple flees the scene.

The image would have encouraged viewers to follow Christ's example, to place forgiveness before revenge, and to engage in spiritual rather than physical combat. Caravaggio presents the scene as if it were a frozen moment, to which the over-crowded composition and violent gestures contribute dramatic impact.

On Boy Bitten by a Lizard we see Caravaggio himself dressed as an effeminate Bacchus who has reached down to pluck a cherry only to have his middle finger bitten by a lizard. It is a sarky Italian lament on the brevity of sensual pleasures. The lizard, representing old age also symbolizes the fact that one doesn't stay young forever and that their will be an end eventually.

Last Supper- Painting Of Woman Enjoying Painting By Andy Warhol

Last Supper
painting of woman enjoying painting by Andy Warhol

G. Boersma
acrylic on masonite
8" x 8" or 20 x 20 cm
2018

SOLD

Andy Warhol's final series of paintings, The Last Supper, was inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s world-famous masterpiece of the same title.

The seeming irreverence for the distinctions between the sacred and the profane, high art and commercial design reflects Warhol’s inevitable transformation of a deeply religious work into a cliché whose profound message has become muted through repetition.

Eerily prescient, The Last Supper was to be the last project of Warhol’s life. His sudden and unexpected death, just one month after the exhibition opened in Milan.

Crucifixion- Painting Of Woman Enjoying Painting By Francisco Zurbaran

Crucifixion
painting of woman enjoying painting by Francisco Zurbaran

G. Boersma
acrylic on masonite
8" x 8" or 20 x 20 cm
2018

SOLD

The figure on my painting is looking at a painting of Jesus Christ by Francisco Zurbaran who painted it in 1627. Conforming to Counter-Reformation dictates, Zurbaran depicted the event occurring not in a crowd but in isolation. Emerging from a dark background, the austere figure has been both idealized in its quiet, graceful beauty and elegant rendering and humanized by the individualized face.

Salvator Mundi- Self Portrait Of Me Enjoying Painting By Leonardo Da Vinci

Salvator Mundi
self portrait of me enjoying painting by Leonardo Da Vinci

G. Boersma
acrylic on masonite
8" x 8" or 20 x 20 cm
2018

SOLD

This painting shows me enjoying Salvator Mundi by Leonardo Da Vinci.

The painting shows Jesus Christ as Salvator Mundi (Latin for Savior of the World). Da Vinci painted it around 1500. Jesus gives a benediction with his right hand raised and two fingers extended, It sold last year for a record breaking 450 million and is currently the most expensive painting ever to be sold at auction.

I thought it was a perfect theme for my ongoing series of people in museums and of course there's a lot of symbolism here too.
