Nicolas Stael was a Russian born artist (1914-1955) whose work left a vivid imprint on subsequent European art, particularly in the field of non-geometric abstract painting.

For de Stael, figuration and abstraction were never mutually exclusive categories. His aim was neither to represent things directly, nor to bow to the total abstraction. Instead, de Staël's was interested in the suggestion of volume, space, and distinct forms in the barest possible terms, alluding to external stimuli without ever giving in to a wholly figurative process.

White Center (Yellow, Pink and Lavender on Rose) is an abstract painting by Mark Rothko completed in 1950. Rothko believed that the rectangles merely offered a new way of representing the presences or spirits that he tried to capture in those earlier works.

He imagined a kind of direct communion between himself and the viewer, one which might touch the viewer with a higher spirituality. White Center was sold in May 2007 by Sotheby's on behalf of David Rockefeller to the Royal family of Qatar.

Hans Hofmann was one of the most important figures of the Abstract Expressionists and celebrated for his exuberant, color-filled canvases. He believed fervently that a modern artist must remain faithful to the flatness of the canvas support.

Nature was the origin of art, Hofmann believed, and no matter how abstract his pictures seemed to become, he always sought to maintain in them a link to the world of objects.

Although the suggestion of movement was critically important to Hoffmann his foremost medium of expression was color: 'The whole world, as we experience it visually,' he said, 'comes to us through the mystic realm of color.'

Ad Reinhardt was a prominent American abstract artist, writer, critic, and educator. Although commonly associated with the Abstract Expressionists, his work had its origins in geometric abstraction.

In this work, subtle variation in hue creates a grid, an effect intended to be neither symbolic nor referential but purely optical. Reinhardt argued for the elimination of sentiment from art. 'I don’t understand, in a painting,' he said, 'the love of anything except the love of painting itself.'

Although Reinhardt sought to remove all references to the external world from his pictures, he remained convinced that his art had the potential to affect social change. He also maintained an interest in various types of mysticism. Something perhaps my viewer is enjoying.

Clyfford Still was an American painter, and one of the leading figures in the first generation of Abstract Expressionists, who developed a new, powerful approach to painting in the years immediately following World War II.

Still's overriding theme is the existential struggle of the human spirit against the forces of nature, a notion that finds expression in the vertical forms that reach defiantly through the majority of his compositions, and a struggle he evoked in his phrase 'the vertical necessity of life.'

His expansive fields of color have sometimes been likened to caves or vast abysses momentarily illuminated by crackling flares of light. A believer in art's moral value in a disorienting modern world, Still would go on to influence a second generation of Color Field painters.

Motherwell intended his Elegies to the Spanish Republic (over 100 paintings, completed between 1948 and 1967) as a "lamentation or funeral song" after the Spanish Civil War.

His recurring motif here is a rough black oval, repeated in varying sizes and degrees of compression and distortion. Instead of appearing as holes leading into a deeper space, these light-absorbent blots stand out against a ground of relatively even, predominantly white upright rectangles.

They have various associations, but Motherwell himself related them to the display of the dead bull's testicles in the Spanish bullfighting ring.

André Breton, leader of the Surrealist group, assigned this work its title based on a meal he shared with Gorky, during which Breton associated an artichoke leaf with an owl.

Gorky's interest in unpremeditated or automatic gestures was aided by his use of thin, liquid paint, which he poured onto the canvas, allowing it to seep freely into the support. As a realist artist it's kinda fun to take a break and just splash some paint around!

Willem deKooning is well known for his abstract expressionists works of art. Woman I was one of a series of six paintings centered upon a female figure that deKooning worked on from 1950 to 1953.

Here, he took the opportunity to further experiment with the wide-ranging methods of applying paint to canvas. It might surprise you that DeKooning made numerous preliminary studies then repainted the canvas repeatedly, scraping away and re-working the image, over nearly two years.

I of course didn't work on it for over two years, just one day, but as I'm a realist artist it was a welcome change to splash some paint around!

I remember first seeing a Rothko painting in a book. I thought it was so simple and it didn't do anything for me. When I saw one in real life I remembered he once mentioned one could best experience his art from a mere 12" or 30 cm distance. So I did. And then something happened. I was overwhelmed by all nuances in colors and felt swept away to a new reality of sorts. Really wonderful and hard to explain. But I do understand why people cry in front of his works. When it gets you it is that powerful.
