A few years later I painted over Jacob in favor of a self portrait

It's been a while since my last update. I've been mad busy completing a couple of larger scaled paintings. I've got 5 lined up and ready to be posted, including my odd painting with 17 selfportraits. The first one however is this lovely scene in the Jopie Huisman Museum.

As you might know I'm currently showing with my great-uncle Jopie at Museum de Andere Kant, the place where the Jopie Huisman Museum first started out back in the 80s. At a quiet moment just minutes before the opening I asked his son Jacob, one of the guys organizing the show, if he would be ever so kind to pose for me. He willingly accepted and here it is: Jacob enjoying the painting Rood Baaien Hemd by his dad in the Jopie Huisman Museum. He loved it and I sure hope you do too!

In other news, like last year I've been invited to the 2nd round of the Royal Prize for Painters, a painting competition held each year by our Queen Beatrix. This monday I've got to bring 2 paintings to Sotheby's in Amsterdam where the jury gathers to judge this years entries.

Next wednesday I hear if I made it through this round. Last year I didn't, but I'm hoping things will be better this year around. It would be pretty cool if I did, because you get to show your work at the Queen's Palace in Amsterdam and you get to meet the Queen too. I'm thinking about bringing my portrait of Geert Wilders with Muslims, but I'm not sure which other work to bring yet. Any suggestions?

Work in progress- 17 selfportraits in just one painting

No daily painting today, as I'm working on a new larger scaled painting. It's going to be a great one, 17 selfportraits all in just one painting. Sounds narcistic? Well, that's right, but you'll get the whole concept of this painting once you see it.

I'm also preparing to post a couple of brand new larger scaled paintings, those should be online soon.

Art Within Art- Van Gogh's Portrait of Gaugain

Portrait of Gaugain

On todays painting you see a woman admiring Van Gogh's portrait of Gaugain. Both painters lived and worked together for a while. Rumor has it that Vincent's brother Theo paid Gaugain to do so.

Vincent was desperate for a painting buddy and thought Gaugain was the perfect match. From Gaugain's point of view it wasn't. He couldn't handle Van Gogh's odd moods.

There's a theory floating around that it was Gaugain who cut Van Gogh's ear during a nasty fight. Vincent protected Gaugain by saying he did it to himself, that's how much he wanted Gaugain to stay.

Not sure if this theory has any truth to it, but it sure is an interesting take on things. Finally Gaugain left, but not before Van Gogh made this wonderful portrait of him.

Street Scenes- Man Standing In Doorway

On Doorway you see a man carrying a backpack standing in a doorway somewhere. We cannot see what he's seeing, we only see a glimpse, but it sure looks bright. It looks like the man is taking it all in before entering any further.

To me doorways are symbolic for entering a new phase in life, we all have our backpacks to carry, but once we get there things are better than ever before. You might want to take a moment and let it all in before going any further.

During my visit to the Van Gogh Museum I had this wonderful view from above on these two guys resting on one of the benches on a lower level. Not exactly art within art, but still a lovely motif for todays painting!

I'm leaving my series of shoe paintings for the time being. This week I'm returning to my art within art series and street scenes.

First up is this wonderful scene from the Van Gogh Museum, a man admiring the Yellow House painting by Van Gogh. It's one of my favourite works by this old master!

Portrait of Menno

Menno
In loving memory of my buddy Menno

This is one of the toughest paintings I ever created. Not so much on the technical side of things, I painted many portraits before, but it was extremely tough because it shows my old buddy Menno who unfortunately passed away 2 years ago.

Menno and I were friends when we were teenagers, always hanging out, playing video games, soccer, you know, fun stuff. As we grew older we kind of lost contact, but I never did forget the good times we shared.

I recently bumped into his dad a couple of weeks ago when I visited my old hometown Makkum. I sat down for a meal at one of the restaurants when it dawned to me that his dad owns the place.

We started talking and Hennie, a fine sculptor himself told me he wanted to make a portrait of Menno but couldn't find the time and energy to do it. That's when I offered to do it for him.

His dad was thrilled when I gave him his portrait of his son. I'm so grateful for my talent to do such a thing for his family, but damn how I wish the occasion could be different. Hennie said he would hang the painting in his restaurant for all to see. I couldn't think of a better place. Thank you Menno for all the good times, I never forget you.

Yes, I'm still in my shoe painting mode! I can't help it, I just love it. Instead of showing you the whole shoe, I wanted something different. I love the cropping, it's obvious that the painting shows a high heel, but then again it has certain abstract qualities about it too. I defenitely like that!
