Painting in Progress- Day 1-2 Ralph's Supermarket

Painting In Progress
the first stages of a brand new painting- day 1 and 2

After a week filled with things unrelated to painting I struggled figuring out what to paint next. I finally came up with this scene at a Ralph's supermarket in LA. You see it here in the first stages. I love the spacious composition and can't wait to get my hands dirty on all the details on the left and right of the painting.

Painting in Progress- Day 13

Painting In Progress
the first stages of a brand new painting- day 13

I finished the painting! Before I show it to you I want to frame it first. I always glue some laths to the wooden panel so it sticks to the frame better. Well, I better get to it!

Painting in Progress- Day 12

Painting In Progress
the first stages of a brand new painting- day 12

Unfortunately I wasn't able to paint yesterday so this is day 12. I had great fun painting the floor, you got to love those Vegas designs, lots of curls going on right there. Today I'm going make some minor changes here and there. I'm not totally satisfied yet with the slot machines, I think they need some more work. My wife also said that the guy should lose his bold spot, that would make the painting better. Not sure about that, but perhaps I'll follow her advice.

Painting in Progress- Day 11

Painting In Progress
the first stages of a brand new painting- day 11

Well, things are moving up fast. I finished work on the slot machines (I think) and painted the chairs. Now it's on to the floor, that shouldn't take to long but you never know. After that it's looking for small mistakes and adding a few touches here and there. Almost there but not quite yet!

Painting in Progress- Day 10

Painting In Progress
the first stages of a brand new painting- day 10

I started work on the slot machines on day 9 and continue to work on them on day 10. I think I'm halfway there and I always like this part the best. It's so much fun! It's where I set my teeth into the painting, I really get going and I work with all my might to get it right. There's no turning back and there's still plenty work to do, I'm totally immersed in painting. I love that feeling.

Painting in Progress- Day 7-9

Painting In Progress
the first stages of a brand new painting- day 7-9

On day 7 I started work on the portrait of the figure. I also worked on the shirt of the man on day 8. I couldn't decide which color to give it and after many a try (from green to brown to white and then some) I finally decided on the bluish purple color on day 9. I did so to make the shirt blend in with the surroundings as to create more harmony.

I'm also working on the slot machines. Making all the lights glow with tons of transparent layers is loads of fun. It takes a while to get it right, but to me that's where the magic is.

Raphael- Still Life Painting Of Books On Raphael And Others

Raphael
still life painting of books on Raphael and others

G. Boersma
acrylic on masonite
6" x 6" or 15 x 15 cm
2012

SOLD

This painting is a study for the larger scaled painting Klimt Books (pictured below, sold). I wanted to experiment a little with the composition to see how it would look in real life before I started to work on the image I had in mind. As turns out it worked just great and I hardly changed a thing.

If you're interested in purchasing Raphael just click on the link above to enter the auction. Start price is just 75 dollars.

Not sure if the upper left corner is finished, but I moved to the right anyway. Did a lot of work already, but it still needs some more.

Painting in Progress- Day 5

Painting In Progress
the first stages of a brand new painting- day 5

Still working on the upper left corner. Added a lot of layers and adjusting colors as I go along.

It's kinda fun to take these progress pictures and show them to you, but I also noticed that I'm thinking more about the painting then usual. That's no good, because whenever I think about painting while painting, it becomes more difficult to do. That's why I usually listen to an audiobook or something like that. Mind busy, hands free as they say. My hands do the work, while my mind is elsewhere.
