The woman on my painting is enjoying a painting by James McNeill Whistler. It shows the old Battersea bridge in London.

Whistler wanted to capture the mood and feeling of a moonlit scene on the Thames, using musical terms like 'nocturne' to emphasize mood over narrative and a limited palette to create a sense of harmony and stillness.

James McNeill Whistler is one of my all time favorite artists and when I saw this book on the bookshelf I knew I wanted to paint it. I love how he looks at us with this bold self assured look of his. I also love how his whole life is cramped into this bundle of pages. That's what remains of us after we're gone I guess: a bunch of stories with a price tag on it. Let's make it a good story.
