I painted it twenty years ago, after watching the news one evening and wondering what I was actually looking at. I decided to take a photo of my television screen (one of those TVs with a bulky back) to freeze time and use it as a starting point for a painting. His Divers (or Les Plongeurs) is a celebrated series of paintings and drawings initiated in the 1940s that depicts entangled human bodies in mid-motion. The initial inspiration came to Léger in 1940 when watching divers in Marseille and, later, a crowded swimming pool in the United States. The chaotic, tangled mass of limbs was his way of capturing the aggressive speed, motion, and overwhelming sensory experience of modern life. All the best, Gerard
