'Everybody will have their 15 minutes of fame,' Andy Warhol once said.
In a time where television programs such as American Idols, Popstars, Next Dancer, Next To Nothing, Next Topmodel, Next President as I like to call the political debates on television, proof to be extremely popular by both the candidates as well as the audience Andy might be right.
Add to it the rise of the internet where everybody talks about themselves on Facebook, Twitter, My Space, LinkedIn and tons of other social media websites, it seems like people feel more important than ever. It's not even individualism anymore, I think we passed that stage and we're now entering the stage of egoism. Everybody talks about me, me, me!
I thought it would be pretty cool to make a painting totally over the top that captures this feeling or idea. I thought let me, me, me create a painting that's all about me, me, me. So I used a selfportrait by me, me, me to make a Gerard Boersma Adoration Wall.
I Warholed up my selfportrait as I've seen others do on Facebook. This is a hommage to Warhol as he was the first to understand that a painting may be saying a 1000 words, but 1000 pictures might have nothing to say at all.
I saw it as a great way to make the image as flat as possible, but still make it pretty and light too. You know, just something nice to look at, no more, no less.
But of course I'm a realist painter so I thought I put myself in front of my own adoration wall to add a little realism. Making the total number of selfportraits 17, in just 1 painting. And even more about me, me, me.
It's also a way of saying that the only person in the world that cares that much about yourself is you, you, you.
kind regards, Gerard
