Tic Tac Toe

This looks like an ordinary museum scene with a couple of Mondriaan paintings, but actually I made up the entire scene. The museum doesn't exist and the Mondriaans cannot be seen together. Victory Boogie Woogie, the painting on the right hangs in the Netherlands while the one on the left can be seen in London.

The painting in the middle looks like it's by Mondriaan, but it's a fake. I designed it myself. If you take a closer look at my design, you might recognize it as a finished game of Tic Tac Toe. I can go into great detail about what this all means, but to be short it's just my crummy way of trying to be funny. You can laugh now or not.

kind regards, Gerard

The Mona Lisa Curse

My recent auction paintings were for a part inspired by Robert Hughes's documentary The Mona Lisa Curse (2008).

In this film art critic Hughes traces the rise of the commercial art market back to 1963, when Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous portrait was exhibited in New York. The Mona Lisa, says Hughes, was treated 'as thought it were a film star. People came not to look at it, but to say that they’d seen it.' He then goes on explaining why high prices being paid for contemporary art has to do with promotion and publicity and not with the quality of the works themselves.

I don't necessarily agree with all Hughes had to say, but I found the movie very interesting. Judge for yourself by watching part 1 of 12 below.

Minister Maxime Verhaegen presents Hillary Clinton book Famous Frisians in America

Our minister of foreign affairs Maxime Verhaegen recently presented Hillary Clinton a copy of the book Famous Frisians in America by editor Peter de Haan and others. Mrs. Clinton wrote a thank you note to mr. De Haan saying how much she enjoyed the gift. Hopefully she also notices the only painter in the book, that's me in case you were wondering:)

Famous Frisians in America is available in English as well as in Dutch at Amazon.com.

kind regards, Gerard

The Attraction is one of my paintings in the book Famous Frisians in America. It shows ground zero only a couple of years after 9/11. I was stunned how people turned it into a tourist attraction, people were smiling and taking pictures. On my painting you see a couple making a movie for friends back home. It's hard to see on the image, but the dark spot above shows the names of people killed during the attacks. It hangs as a dark cloud above my figures.
