Ballet Dance Class- Painting of a woman enjoying a painting by Edgar Degas

Ballet Dance Class
painting of a woman enjoying a painting by Edgar Degas

G. Boersma
acrylic on masonite
59" x 48" or 150 x 120 cm
2018

I just finished my latest large scaled painting of a woman enjoying Ballet Class by Edgar Degas.

From the 1870s until his death, Degas's favorite subjects were ballerinas at work, in rehearsal or at rest, and he tirelessly explored the theme with many variations in posture and gesture.

Here the class is coming to an end – the pupils are exhausted, they are stretching, twisting to scratch their backs, adjusting their hair or clothes, an earring, or a ribbon, paying little heed to the inflexible teacher, a portrait of Jules Perrot, a real-life ballet master.

Ballet Class will be shown publicly for the first time during the summer show at gallery Twee Pauwen in The Hague. If you're interested in purchasing this painting just let me know!

All the best, Gerard

The Village- Painting Of Man Enjoying Painting By Marc Chagall

The Village
painting of a man enjoying painting by Marc Chagall

G. Boersma
acrylic on masonite
8" x 8" or 20 x 20 cm
2017

SOLD

On the painting we see my figure enjoying a painting by Marc Chagall. Painted the year after Chagall came to Paris in 1910, 'I and the Village' is influenced by memories of the artist's place of birth and his relationship to it.

In the village, peasants and animals lived side by side, in a mutual dependence here signified by the line from peasant to cow, connecting their eyes. I and the Village is nostalgic and magical, a rural fairy tale: objects jumble together, scale shifts abruptly, and a woman and two houses, at the painting's top, stand upside-down. This daringly whimsical style were at the time considered groundbreaking and very enjoyable up to this day.

kind regards, Gerard
