In this painting you see a woman enjoying the vibrant, hypnotic rhythms of a Yayoi Kusama polka dot painting. For Kusama, these dots are not mere decoration; they are symbols of infinity, the vast cosmos, and a lifelong tool for survival.
She turned to drawing dots as a coping mechanism to map, contain, and control her terrifying psychological experiences. Kusama often notes that a polka dot carries the form of the sun, symbolizing the energy of the entire world and representing a space with no beginning or end. As the woman looks at this boundless sea of dots, her contemplation reminds us that we are all interconnected particles of this space.
All the best, Gerard
