Marilyn Monroe passed away in 1962 and the typical Warhol theme of fame, beauty and death reached a first climax in his oeuvre by painting her portrait posthumously.
The artist painted multiple variations of Marilyn, Warhol not only demonstrating his exceptional sense of colour, but also consciously integrated photography, the ultimate means of mass communication.
