You’re now viewing my painting of a woman enjoying a self portrait by Paul Gauguin. He dedicated this self portrait to Van Gogh. In it Gauguin appears as Jean Valjean, anti-hero of Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables’, who, while vilified by society, remains true to his personal morality. Seen on the right in profile is Émile Bernard, a fellow painter, who later accused Gauguin of taking credit for his ideas – not without some justification.
