I painted it twenty years ago, after watching the news one evening and wondering what I was actually looking at. I decided to take a photo of my television screen (one of those TVs with a bulky back) to freeze time and use it as a starting point for a painting. G. Boersma SOLD In Luchtalarm, I depart from my signature, quiet museum interiors to present a minimalist modern still life. The composition is deceptively simple: a mechanical air raid siren cutting sharply into a brilliant, cloudless blue sky. The primary symbolic tension in Luchtalarm lies in its forced duality. To me, the serene blue sky represents peace, freedom, and the calmness of everyday life, while the siren is a symbol of latent vulnerability—a reminder of how quickly peace can be shattered by geopolitical instability, climate catastrophes, or modern conflict. The painting operates much like Schrödinger's cat; it is simultaneously calm and anxious. Because we cannot see sound, the siren might actually be blaring right now, trapping the viewer in that tense space of not knowing which one it is.

I was directly inspired to create this piece after hearing Rutte speak publicly about the realities of modern war. With this painting, it is my sincere hope that we don't forget the raw horrors of war, with Anne Frank standing as one of its most enduring and poignant symbols.

G. Boersma SOLD The man on my painting is enjoying a painting by Fernand Léger. His Divers (or Les Plongeurs) is a celebrated series of paintings and drawings initiated in the 1940s that depicts entangled human bodies in mid-motion. The initial inspiration came to Léger in 1940 when watching divers in Marseille and, later, a crowded swimming pool in the United States. The chaotic, tangled mass of limbs was his way of capturing the aggressive speed, motion, and overwhelming sensory experience of modern life. All the best, Gerard
