Besides the larger scaled painting I'm also preparing for a groupshow called Icons and Common Man from april 23 - june 5 at Gallery Roos Van Tudor in Leeuwarden.

My portrait of Geert Wilders with Muslims will be shown to the public for the first time. Crime, a protest painting I made against the new tax law for the arts will also be shown there for the first time. The show opens this saturday at 16.00h. I hope to greet you as my guest!

Jubileum Expositie Jopie Huisman

Museum De Andere Kant just before the crowd arrived

I wanted to post something about the opening of my show with my great-uncle Jopie Huisman yesterday, but I needed a whole day to recover. What a day it has been! So many people showed up! I don't have any exact numbers, but I've been told that over 500 people attended the openings ceremony!

Opening speech by cousin Joop and son Jacob

It all started at the Jopie Huisman Museum where cousin Joop and son Jacob made their opening speech. Those guys are something else. They never organized a show before, let alone one of this size and magnitude, but they did it anyway. And how!

They talked about their trips cross country meeting all the people who owned one or more works by Jopie. Without those proud owners the show would have been impossible! Jacob and Joop collected over 150 works by my great-uncle, most of these paintings and drawings were never shown to the public before.

Former Provincial Governor of Friesland Ed Nijpels,
Jopie's first wife Elly and me painting

After the speeches the whole crowd had to move across the street to hear Ed Nijpels speak. Together with Jopie's first wife Elly and me we painted a black and white version of the selfportrait of Jopie as an original way to open the show.

My showroom upstairs

Of course you could find me upstairs in my own showroom. I enjoyed talking to everybody and I got loads of positive responses. Some of the people I talked to turned out to be distant relatives whom I never had the pleasure of meeting before. I heard so many stories about Jopie as well that my head is still spinning!

Needless to say I had a wonderful time and I would like to thank Jacob and Joop again for inviting me to show and everybody else who made this show possible! I'm going to take things easy today and slowly getting back to painting. In the near future I will be painting at the show, dates are to be announced!

The Meeting- Selfportrait with Selfportrait Jopie Huisman

The Meeting
Selfportrait with Selfportrait Jopie Huisman

23.6" x 23.6" or 60 x 60 cm
2011

Yes, yes I know! I wouldn't post any larger scaled paintings here, but I wanted to make an exception for The Meeting!

The painting is a center piece for the show with my late great-uncle Jopie Huisman which opens tomorrow at 14.00h. The painting is very dear to me as it shows me enjoying the famous selfportrait by Jopie in his own museum, so you could say it's a selfportrait within a selportrait. More background info on this piece can be found on my other blog.

Today I went to the museum once more for the final details. We're all set for the big day tomorrow! It's going to be huge. I heard they even close the road in front of the museum for all trafic, they expect that many people. I sure hope they all show up!

Ed Nijpels, former Provincial Governor of Friesland for Queen Beatrix, opens the show tomorrow by finishing a black and white version of the selfportrait by Jopie I made especially for the occasion. I'm going to assist him. At least that's the plan, I don't think he even knows about that one yet:) I'm sure it's going to be lots of fun!

Well, I'm going to get a good night sleep, so I'm fully charged up for tomorrow. I sure hope to see you there and otherwise I'm going to tell you all about it right here on my blog!

kind regards, Gerard

PS I'm sooo sorry if you got my shoe paintings again, I mixed up things! It should be okay now!
