A man is admiring a portrait of Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney by American realist artist Robert Henri in the Kunsthal in Rotterdam.
Whitney was a patron of the arts in New York and where she later founded the well known Whitney Museum. Robert Henri who made this wonderful portrait was the leader of the Ashcan School, a realist artistic movement that came into prominence in the United States during the early twentieth century.
The group is best known for works portraying scenes of daily life in New York's poorer neighborhoods. I already painted my own urban scenes of daily life when I learned about the Ashcan School. Although my style differs greatly, I think my work would have been a great fit!
