Kazimir Malevich was the founder of the artistic and philosophical school of Suprematism. He invented this term because he believed that art should transcend subject matter. The truth of shape and color should reign 'supreme' over the image or narrative.
His ideas about forms and meaning in art would eventually constitute the theoretical underpinnings of abstract art. Malevich worked in a variety of styles, but his most important and famous works concentrated on the exploration of pure geometric forms.
With the piece 'Black Cross' Malevich explores an important aspect of human life, that of the power to choose between two options. In some cases, this choice is reduced to one between good and evil. In other situations, it is not so obvious which option is good or will bring results down the road. Perhaps that is what my figure is thinking about as well.
