Maisons à l'Estaque or Houses at l'Estaque is a 1908 oil painting by Cubist painter Georges Braque. L'Estaque is a fisherman’s village in the surroundings of Marseille well-known for its fabulous landscapes celebrated by Paul Cézanne.
Houses At L'Estaque is considered to be the very first Cubist landscape. In this painting, the artistic rendering and structure of composition is more important than transcribing a feeling of reality. The landscape is reduced to its essential, patterned by various scattered shapes and the limited use of color.
The painting prompted art critic Louis Vauxcelles to mock it as being composed of cubes which led to the name of the movement Cubism.
