In his mid-fifties and at the height of his career, Cézanne began a series of paintings, drawings, and watercolors of card players. Cézanne referred to this series as 'souvenirs of the museums', as they were steeped in art historical references to paintings by past European masters. Painting a woman enjoying this piece in a museum adds another layer to these references.
