Video: Gerard Boersma- The Auction

New Video: The Auction

Second video clip me and Jasper Noordermeer made just last week. This time around my painting The Auction is the center of attention. Again you hear me speak Dutch, but the clip has English subtitles too. Nice note to add, I wear the same sweater as I did on my painting Me, Me, Me!

I'm really having fun making these little vids. I feel like a reporter must feel when presenting the news on location. Can't wait to make the next one! Not sure when that will be, but we're working on it. More video clips can be found on my Youtube Channel.

I'm still working on my commissioned paintings too. One is almost completed, but still needs a couple of days work. Of course my collector is the first one to see it once it's completely finished, I'll then post it here for all to see. In the meantime, I sure hope you enjoy me video clip The Auction!

kind regards, Gerard

New Video: Gerard Boersma- The Crime

New Video: The Crime

I've been wanting to do some video clips for a long time now, but my lack of knowledge of the medium always prevented me to do so. I still don't have any, but luckily my buddy Jasper Noordermeer does. He's excellent with the camera and knows how to direct, edit and produce as well.

We're planning on doing a series of short clips with me talking about my paintings or perhaps my philosophies on life and art in general as well. We're planning on shooting one whenever we find the time in our busy schedules. Hopefully it turns out to be a regular thing.

In any case, in todays clip you hear and see me talking about my protest painting The Crime. You're hear me speak Dutch, but Jasper provided the clip with some English subtitles too.

I sure hope you enjoy this little vid. I'm going to take a little break from my daily paintings, I've got tons of commissioned paintings piled up that need my attention bad. I'll post something new whenever I have the chance and will continue to post older and larger scaled paintings on my other blog Hyperrealism Paintings as well. More video clips can be found on my Youtube Channel.

kind regards, Gerard

Me, Me, Me!- 17 Selfportraits in 1 Painting

'Everybody will have their 15 minutes of fame,' Andy Warhol once said.

In a time where television programs such as American Idols, Popstars, Next Dancer, Next To Nothing, Next Topmodel, Next President as I like to call the political debates on television, proof to be extremely popular by both the candidates as well as the audience Andy might be right.

Add to it the rise of the internet where everybody talks about themselves on Facebook, Twitter, My Space, LinkedIn and tons of other social media websites, it seems like people feel more important than ever. It's not even individualism anymore, I think we passed that stage and we're now entering the stage of egoism. Everybody talks about me, me, me!

I thought it would be pretty cool to make a painting totally over the top that captures this feeling or idea. I thought let me, me, me create a painting that's all about me, me, me. So I used a selfportrait by me, me, me to make a Gerard Boersma Adoration Wall.

I Warholed up my selfportrait as I've seen others do on Facebook. This is a hommage to Warhol as he was the first to understand that a painting may be saying a 1000 words, but 1000 pictures might have nothing to say at all.

I saw it as a great way to make the image as flat as possible, but still make it pretty and light too. You know, just something nice to look at, no more, no less.

But of course I'm a realist painter so I thought I put myself in front of my own adoration wall to add a little realism. Making the total number of selfportraits 17, in just 1 painting. And even more about me, me, me.

It's also a way of saying that the only person in the world that cares that much about yourself is you, you, you.

kind regards, Gerard

Of course after painting Marilyn Female I couldn't resist making a male version too.

I'm still in doubt whether these two paintings are a diptych or not. They sure do look great together side by side, but of course they don't quite fit too. The portraits of Marilyn don't really match and the frames are a bit off too. Then again they do look great together. What do you think, diptych or not?

You might have read my tweet already, but I didn't make it through to the next round of the Royal Prize for Painters. I got knocked out of the competition. Today I drove back to Amsterdam to pick up my paintings at Sotheby's (Sotheby's Amsterdam is closing shop by the way!).

Of course I'm curious to know why I got kicked out, but it's the policy of the competition not to give out any information for the simple reason that it's too time absorbing to give each artist an explaination. So I haven't got the slightest clue. I thought I had a chance with my portrait of Wilders, but the jury thought otherwise. Ah well, back to the studio again!

Marilyn Female is inspired by one of my recent daily paintings. I thought it would be just perfect for a larger painting, adding even more Marilyns on top so it looks like a never ending wall filled with images of her. I like the contrast between the flat graphic portraits by Warhol against the realism of my figure. It makes the woman more real in some way.

Yesterday I brought my paintings The Prophet (Geert Wilders with Muslims) and Reproduction to Sotheby's, Amsterdam for the 2nd round of the Royal Prize for Painters. The government just increased the speedlimit to 130kmph or 80mph on certain highways, so I got there pretty quick.

It was nice to see all the other entries of the 30-40 artists who made it through to this round. Today workers at Sotheby's do their best decorating the place, making sure everything is just top notch. Tomorrow the jurors will make their pick. They let you know by phone if you're amongst the artists invited to show at the palace of the Queen or not. Sure hope I make it through to the next round!

The Myth

There’s a myth floating around in our society. It’s a myth I thoroughly resent and find pretty annoying to say the least. It’s the myth of what it means to be an artist.

According to the myth an artist is this free spirited, bohemian character who breaks all the rules in society. A misunderstood genius on the break of insanity. The myth tells us that struggle, complexity and suffering are neccessary components of creativity. Without these an artist isn’t a true artist at all.

No, a true artist isn’t concerned with a comfortable lifestyle. They wear raggedy clothes, find inspiration in the middle of the night, stay young forever and become famous long after they’re dead and burried.

Financial success is equal to selling out and the ultimate poison for their work. Artists are supposed to be weird, moody, flamboyant, outgoing or even downright antisocial.

The Truth

The truth is I don’t like to struggle nor do I like to suffer or being hungry. I like the finer things in life and think most rules in society are necessary. I hate it when a new shirt has splashes of paint all over it. I like to comb my hair and just look great. I like to sleep at night and don’t mind growing older and wiser.

And yes, I’d rather enjoy the fruits of my labour right now then after I’m dead. I don’t mind making money. It means I was of service to another human being. As a result I can buy food and shelter, art materials or best of all gifts for friends and family I care about.

I enjoy talking to people and I like to be kind, gentle, cooperative and social. I like to think, to be clear headed, have an open mind and learn things. I like getting up early in the morning, work hard and commit myself to excellence and to finish what I start.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with gathering knowledge and setting goals. I like to be a happy positive person, thoroughly enjoying myself and all life has to offer. If that means I’m not a true artist, so be it. But I do love to paint, it's my own personal Eldorado.
