After yesterdays Orval, the special beer from Belgium, I thought I give you some nonalcoholic Lipton ice tea today. I always love to drink this on a hot summers day. I can imagine myself sitting on a terrace sipping on this. Oh well, we just have to wait before this cold winter passes I guess.

Orval - Still Life Painting Of Glass Belgium Beer

Not that long ago I saw some Belgium guy on Dutch tv. When asked what the main difference is between our countries the guy answered that the Netherlands might have good roads (Belgium is notorious for extremely bad roads), but we sure don't know how to brew some good beer.

I must say the special beers from Belgium are the best. One of my favourites is Orval, a strong beer which easily gets you tipsy. On todays painting you see an empty glass (of course!) of this brand.

Abduction - man looking at Rembrandt Getty Museum

I have had this painting lying around for quite some time now, I don't know why I haven't posted it before. On the painting you see a man looking at The Abduction of Europa painted by Rembrandt.

A lot of action is going on Rembrandts painting. You see the god Jupiter, who disguised himself as a white bull in order to seduce the princess Europa away from her companions and carry her across the sea to the distant land that would bear her name. My figure just stands there admiring the scene in front of him. I thought this contrast is quite interesting.

Always - still life of coca cola glass

After all the museum paintings I've done lately I felt like doing something completely different for a change. I thought it would be cool to make a still life with some reflections and glass in it. I turned to my beloved Coca Cola motive, I just love the white lettering and reds of the label against a dark greenish background. It just looks so classy.

It's also been a while since I made a painting this small. It felt great to finish a painting within a day again and it got my juices going so to speak. I just might return to making dailies!

Swing - man looking at Robert Longo in Rubell Family Collection

First painting of 2010! It looks like the figures on the triptych by Robert Longo are dancing. They're really not according to the title Longo gave this piece: Man Trapped in Ice.

My figure just sits there looking, doing nothing but enjoying soom good art. He looks immobile, but the true immobile figures can be found on Longo's piece. I find this contrast quite intereseting. It shows that there's more than meets the eye and you cannot really trust your first impressions.

By placing the bench offcentred I tried to emphasize the dancing and swinging element of Longo's figure into the total composition.

Me in my studio
On this picture you see me in my studio working on Conqueror. As you notice I'm working flat on a table, with multiple brushes at the same time. The green palette I use is actually a plastic lit of an old bucket of latex paint. I have that one since I first started out, I cannot imagine making a painting without it! In the back you see my paintings The Corner and Lunch Break, the smaller ones in the back are Elevator and Pizza. The brown and white wooden panels are panels waiting to be painted, I always have a couple of them in stock.

Conqueror - couple looking at Nazis by Piotr Uklansky at Rubell Family Collection

Conqueror is the last painting of 2009 and the second one situated at the Rubell Family Collection in Miami. On the painting you see a couple in a warm embrace looking at The Nazis by Piotr Uklansky (1998).

The piece comprises 166 film stills and poster images culled from American and European postwar cinema, each picture showing the head and shoulders of an actor playing a Nazi. Although the piece provoked passionate and by times violent responses, fact is that its just a collection of actors portraying a Nazi in a movie. Judging by the responses it seems that people tend to believe in the reality of the representation.

I'm not sure what goes through the minds of my figures, but I do know that no matter what horror an ideology might bring it can never kill the love people have for one another. By placing my figures in a warm embrace I tried to show here that love is the true conqueror.

Conqueror and other paintings from my series about the Rubell Family Collection can be seen next week at the LA Art Show in Los Angeles from 20-24.

Painting those little portraits of all those Nazis took me quite some time. The portraits aren't any larger than about 1" x 1.5". I did about 10 or so a day. My painting doesn't show all the Nazis in Uklansky's work, but still shows over 100 portraits.

Nuts - A Guy Looking At Richard Prince At Rubell Family Collection

Happy New Year! Although I enjoyed a couple of days off during the holidays I've been hard at work making new works. I just started a new series of museum paintings situated at the Rubell Family Collection in Miami.

First up is Nuts, a guy carrying a golden handbag looking at Richard Prince's work with the same title from his so called Joke-series, paintings which often show a written joke. Here the text says: "A guy goes to a psychiatrist wearing only saran wrap. The psychiatrist says to the guy, I can clearly see your nuts. See your nuts you nut." I thought the guy with a handbag looking at this particular work by Prince really adds something to it.

Also, within the art world Prince is well known for borrowing imagery from other artists. For example he created controversy by re-photographing four photographs which previously appeared elsewhere. This became a major discussion concerning authorship and authenticity of photographic images, as well as photographic copyright issues. Furthermore the Joke-series question the importance of the unique in high art. To some extend I'm doing the same thing here as Prince, but with Prince his own work. I couldn't think of a more appropriate painting then one of his Joke-paintings.
