Tax rise and Happy New Year

This last day of 2010 is one filled with mixed emotions. On the one hand I'm happy, I'm close to completing my larger sized painting, an extremely complicated piece which potentially can stir up things a bit. I got a couple of great shows coming up as well and I can't wait to get started on my daily paintings again. As a matter of fact, my new year's resolution is to make one each day again like I used to do. All good things!

But on the other hand I'm saddened by the fact that our government here in The Netherlands decided to go through with the tax-rise for arts and culture. I just heard they had an emergency meeting this week. Taxes for visual arts will rise from 6% to a staggering 19% starting tomorrow! Can you believe that? Not only is this an outrageous high tax-rise, but our government gave us about 3 days to prepare ourselves for this!

Taxes for performing artists won't rise untill july 2011. This too amazes me, why make a difference between performing artists and visual artists? That's sure doesn't strike me as fair. Well, the whole tax-rise doesn't strike me as fair.

Fair or not, taxes will rise tomorrow. After giving it much thought I decided not to let my beloved collectors take all the heat, meaning I will not raise prices for my daily paintings, but I'm afraid I have to for my larger scaled paintings. This means my income level probably will drop a bit. Of course I'm not pleased with this to say the least, but it's the best solution I can come up with for my collectors.

To end on a positive note: I completely changed my packaging for my daily paintings. They now come in a luxurious white gift box filled with 2 layers of foam. A certificate of authenticity and a free digital book on cd are included as well.
Sarah Bowie, a collector of my work, recently quoted me in her article about
'Brown as color mix'. A nice read on this last day of 2010!

I wish you all a happy new year and make sure to have some fun tonight! Be safe and I will see you again this monday!

kind regards, Gerard

From a gun back to a nice scene of a woman looking for books in one of our local bookstores. I wish I had a bookcase like that, mine isn't as near as big. It would be great to have a wall covered with books, like you have your own library and never run out of anything to read. But then again I'm glad I haven't got one, there's no room left for any paintings!

Something completely different from museum scenes, shoes or bookstores! Todays still life painting shows nothing else but a Colt 45. This painting appears in a yet to be released videoclip of popular Dutch band The Proov.

One of the bandmembers is nicknamed Colt 45, don't ask me why, I wouldn't know, but I do know they didn't want to use a real gun in the videoclip so they used my painting instead. Quite an honor!

While painting I couldn't help but notice how powerful this gun looks, even against an yellow background. Perhaps it's because I'm not used to guns, but man that thing is powerful!

Prince- Woman Looking At Richard Prince

Prince

G. Boersma
acrylics on masonite
2.3" x 2.7" or 6 x 7 cm
2010
SOLD

A while ago I went shopping for some new panels to paint on. I ordered my usual bunch when the owner said he got an oddly shaped piece left. I asked him if he could chop it for me, he did and now I got a stack of tiny ± 6 x 7 cm panels.

Todays painting is the first on one of those little panels. It shows a woman looking at Richard Prince's work called Nuts. Like yesterdays shoe I zoomed in a bit making the large painting by Prince the backdrop for this painting. I like the contrast between the abstract background and the realistic woman.

To be honest I'm not exactly sure what to ask for this little gem so I thought this is a perfect chance try something new here. It works a bit like the big auctionhouses Christie's and Sotheby's. They usually give an estimate of what the painting is worth and then start the auction just below the estimate.

By friday I collect all bids and who ever has the highest bid wins the painting. If two people place the same bid, the first one gets it. To make it fair for everybody please note that you can bid only once!

The second high heel shoe painting for ebay. I approached it a bit different this time around. I thought it would be fun to zoom in and only show the nose of the shoe. It gives the painting a more abstract feel, but still it's realistic as well. I like that!

CL 014 is the last shoe painting for now, I will be returning to some urban scenes and of course I continue working on my larger sized painting. That one is really complicated, it has over 750 little portraits. I'm about half way through and cannot wait to get it completed!

Today I'm heading over to see my painting relatives Gerrit Wijngaarden and Grietje Huisman to discuss a very special show. More info follows soon!

Lost - Man Reading In Bookstore

Lost

G. Boersma
acrylics on masonite
6" x 6" or 15 x 15 cm
2010
SOLD

It's kind of hard to follow up on yesterdays painting with a small 6" x 6", but still I like this one a lot. To me it represents that feeling I get when I'm surrounded by books, finding one with an interesting title and just cannot stop reading. The whole world seems to disappear around you and the book just completely absorbs you. That's why I entitled the painting 'Lost'.

I also got some bad news I'm afraid. Starting january the Dutch government decided to triple (!) the taxes for art and tickets to cultural events. The taxes will go from 6% to a whooping 19%. They are also making some heavy cuts on subsidizing art and culture.

This has caused a lot of turmoil in the Dutch artworld and no one is pleased about this to make an understatement. I don't like it one bit, but still I have to play along I'm afraid. Since I never like it when people raise prizes and you get nothing in return, I'm thinking of a way to add more value. I haven't decided what to do yet, but any ideas are more than welcome. So if you think of something please let me know!

SOLD

Finally no shoes:) Remember a while ago I talked about a painting that featured some well known models from the Netherlands? Well, I have been working on it for over a month, but this is it: my painting of Anker and Anker.

Anker and Anker are twin brothers and both are attorneys at their own lawfirm. They handle some of the most famous lawsuits in this country and appear regularly in the mainstrain media. A two hour documentary about the brothers recently aired on national tv for example.

I asked Anker and Anker a while ago if they wanted to model for me and I was thrilled to learn when they agreed to do so. Last week I showed the painting to them. I got up early in the morning, packaged the painting carefully and headed over to their headquarters. A nice note to add is that their firm is located in a 16th century building were the first wife of Rembrandt was born.

And here I was, a 21st painter with a painting of the new owners, quite exciting I can tell you. I always get a bit nervous before showing a portrait to the sitters. Last minutes doubt creep in about the likeness and many other things. But there was no need to worry: both brothers absolutely loved it! They loved the light, all the details and they even said that one could actually see the difference between the two of them, a great compliment when you're painting twins!

Currently the painting hangs in their firm, but it just might go on public view in the not so distant future. Sure hope you enjoy this one!

I also continued working on my larger scaled painting. As a matter of fact I have for most of the time this week, hence the few updates. It turns out nice, but it's soooo much work. It's been a while since my last update. I kind of got caught up in a larger scaled painting which potentially can be quite newsworthy. In any case it will take some time before it's finished, but slowly but surely I'm getting there.

In the meantime I did paint a couple of shoes, which I will be posting this week. After that I'm returning to some other beloved subjects and of course I continue working on my larger scaled painting.

With all my smaller shoe paintings I've done recently of course I couldn't resist the temptation of painting a larger one as well. You cannot see it on the pictures, but the smaller ones are about life size, so this one is larger than life.

There's something funny about painting things larger than life, it makes the object looking kind of weird, but then again it doesn't. I for one defenitely like it! The painting can be seen at the Affordable Art Fair Amsterdam which opens tomorrow.

New book - Acrylic Innovation By Nancy Reyner

Cover of the book Acrylic Innovation by Nancy Reyner
published by North Light Books, USA
Hardcover, 144 pages
English
11 x 9 x 0.8 inches

I am proud to announce to be included in bestselling author and artist Nancy Reyner's new book about innovative acrylic painters from around the world. I'm the only artist from the Netherlands to be featured and if I'm not mistaken the only one from Europe.

Acrylic Innovation takes a close look at artists who are taking advantage of acrylics potential to create unique genres or styles and addresses methods and techniques for finding an individual artists own voice in the medium.

This book presents a wide variety of successful acrylic painters, each using acrylic in unique ways to create their own original styles. By looking at how other artists came up with their ideas, readers will be able to explore ways of personalizing their own art.

Loaded with original artwork and valuable insight from 64 artists, this book offers an incredible range of diverse styles and subjects. Readers see how each artist uses acrylic in unique ways to create expressive and personal art. I have been flipping through the book these last couple of days and even I am learning a thing or two.

Here is a link to purchase the book from Amazon, who offers a 34% discount on the book and you have a change to look inside as well.

A while ago me and Petra of Amstel Gallery were talking about my greatuncle
Jopie Huisman
. As you might know he was a realist painter and well known for his paintings of rags and old shoes. We both expressed our appreciation for his paintings when Petra said beneath her breath that somebody should paint modern shoes. Suddenly we were both silent, looked at each other and I said that's a very good idea!

So here it is, CL 001, the first painting of my new series of paintings about high heels. I especially choose to paint high heels, because they are modern, hardly painted before, but above all they look so classy and stylish. The high heels also make for a very nice diagonal composition. It's very powerful.

The shoes are brand new and the light background makes it look really fresh, almost like an ad. I like that. It makes the shoes look like they're waiting for their new owner to pick them up. We can only fantasize what she will look like and what great parties the shoes will be worn to. To emphasize the idea of an ad I thought it would be fun to give the painting a title with letters and numbers like companies do with their products.

Todays high heel shows a shoe by Christian Louboutin, perhaps you knew already when you saw the trademark red sole. This week I will post a new high heels painting everyday. Sure hope you will enjoy those!

The Thinker- Painting Of Boy Reading In Bookstore

The Thinker
If you're interested in purchasing this painting, please email me for more information and price.

G. Boersma
acrylics on masonite
41.3" x 54.6" or 104,8 x 138,7 cm
2010

SOLD

It took my quite some time, but I finally completed my largest painting up to now. The measurements are a whooping 41.3 x 54.6" or 104,7 x 138,7 cm. The painting shows a boy reading in a bookstore. Books are everywhere. I'm guessing there are at least 500 of them on the painting, I didn't really want to count them all. But by any means feel free to do so and prove me wrong or right:)

When you look at children you're basically looking at the future. I always hear a lot of people complaining about the youth, sometimes that's justified, but I feel the boy on my painting is a fine example of how the youth can be as well. Here's a boy surrounded by books, sitting down and just starts reading. Like most children he probably has a lively imagination and a healthy curiousity about what the future has in store for him.

I always like this about the youth, they're full of live and usually are very enthousiastic about even the smallest things. I just hope he can keep up this positive attitude towards the world and that nobody puts this fire out. Lets hope that the fire-distinquisher on the far right will never be used.

The Thinker Detail

From tomorrow onwards I will pick up my daily paintings again, starting with a special series!

Update

Just a quick update of what's going on right now. After enjoying a little break, I'm back in the studio painting.

I'm currently working on my largest painting up to now, its measurements are about 104 x 138 cm or 41 x 54", quite a challenge! Don't want to spoil the surprise of what the subject manner is, but I can tell you things are going really well. I think I can complete the painting by the end of this week or by monday at the latest. After that I will be returning to my daily paintings as well.

Coffee Bean- Man With Laptop Behind Window Of Coffeeshop

Coffee Bean
If you're interested in purchasing this painting, please email me for more information and price.

G. Boersma
acrylics on masonite
35.6" x 27.6" or 90,3 x 70 cm
2010
SOLD

It's been a while since I last posted, I was hard at work finishing Coffee Bean! I got lost painting all the little details, there really were a lot! But I loved painting every single one of them. On the painting you see a man sitting with a laptop behind a window of a coffeeshop. If you take a closer look you see another figure in the background left doing the exact same thing.

It seems people nowadays drag their computer everywhere. I always wonder why. Perhaps it's because they want to enjoy a cup of coffee and they feel insecure if they don't have something to play with when they're alone. In any case, it sure makes a great painting and I would love to hear your thoughts on this! The scene takes place somewhere in LA. I forgot the exact spot, but it's either in Hollywood or Santa Monica.

I'm going to take something like a summer recess. You know sleeping in a little and get my mind of painting for a while. Getting some new energy and come back totally charged up. Not sure how long I will be gone, I'm guessing a week, maybe two. That would be long enough!

Vase- woman looking at Sunflowers Vincent van Gogh

Vase
SOLD

G. Boersma
acrylics on masonite
6" x 6" or 15 x 15 cm
2010
SOLD

Although I spent most of my time working on my larger sized painting I did find time to paint this scene from the Vincent van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam as well. The woman is looking at Van Gogh's worldfamous Sunflowers. It looks like the girl is alone, but you can tell by the shadows on the wall there's actually quite a crowd behind her, you as an observer are one of them. I like the fact that the shadows look like a vase themself.

Today I also bought my largest panels in a very long time. As a matter of fact one is just a monster and will be the largest painting I've ever done once finished. Its measurements are a whooping 41.2 x 54.6" or 104,7 x 138,8 cm. I was flipping through a book about Hopper when I suddenly got inspired to paint big, really big.

It was kind of tricky getting the panels back to my studio in one piece on my bicycle. Yeah I know, why not take my car instead, but I was afraid it wouldn't fit. Luckily one of the employees at the store helped getting the panels safely packaged on one of my pedals. Quite a ride I can tell you.

Anyway, I already have some idea for the painting and I cannot wait to get started. If you're an artist yourself you know about that tingly feeling you get before starting a new work. But first I want to finish that other large painting and let's not forget about my dailies as well!

Commisioned Painting- Snackbar Het Vliet

Snackbar Het Vliet
SOLD

G. Boersma
acrylics on masonite
6" x 6" or 15 x 15 cm
2010

In my hometown there is this quite unusual snackcounter, not because they sell strange things or anything. No, they're pretty straight forward with that. It's because of their clientele and the employees themselves. Imagine the most wonderful characters from all walks of live coming together in one place and you get a good idea of what I'm talking about. One of my collectors is a regular there and asked me to paint this scene of snackcounter Het Vliet.

I'm currently working on a larger sized painting of a man sitting in a coffeeshop (the one that actually sells coffee, not to be mistaken with the Dutch smokeshops which are called coffeeshops as well). It's coming together just great and I'm hoping to complete it anytime soon. After that I will pick up my daily painting routine.

Bad news I'm afraid, I didn't get a call from Sotheby's today, which means I didn't make it to the next round of the Royal Prize for Painters. Such a shame! Haven't got the slightest clue why, it isn't custom they tell you. Perhaps I know more tomorrow when I'm picking up my work, but I'm afraid I'll never know. Ah well, back to the easel again! Well friday that is.

In any case, todays painting is a still life painting of an art bookshelf I did a while ago. It got collected by one of my beloved collectors as soon as I finished working on it. Hope you enjoy this!

Royal Prize for Painters

Dirk
one of the paintings for the Royal Prize for Painters, painting is sold

Today I went to Amsterdam delivering 2 paintings at auctionhouse Sotheby's for the second round of the Royal Prize for Painters, a very prestigious award our Queen Beatrix gives away each year to a promising young artist. If I make it through this round I can show my work at her palace in Amsterdam and actually meet the queen personally as well.

When I drove away this morning the weather was extremely bad, it poored and poored like it hadn't done for weeks. Of course I took a couple of bad exits and had to walk about a mile or so in the rain with a painting under each arm. However, as soon as I delivered my work and walked out the clouds broke open and the sun started to shine again. I hope the sun will shine again this wednesday afternoon when I'm hearing whether I made it through this round or not, very exciting!

The dad of my sister in law recently retired and celebrated an anniversary as well. My sister in law Dinah asked me if I could paint something to remember his company. She thought a welder would be perfect and we decided to go for that. Needless to say her dad was quite pleased with his brand new painting!

Milkmaid- Man Looking At Vermeer

Detail Milkmaid

I don't know what it is about the Milkmaid by Vermeer, I just love that painting! The lighting, composition, subject matter, it all speaks to me. He was just an amazing painter!

Not to toot my own horn, but I'm quite satisfied with my version as well. It was pretty tricky to get the painting by Vermeer straight, especially since it's so small. It's only about 1- 1.5" or 3-4 cm in length. The head of the Milkmaid is only one fith of an ince or half a centimeter high. So yeah, that's small! You can imagine how great it felt when I actually finished that part. Hope you enjoy this one as well!

2010

SOLD

I sure could use some refreshment like the bottle of Dr. Pepper on my painting, it's so hot in my studio! I'm loving the weather but it's really troublesome to do some decent painting. The paint is drying like crazy, at times even before I can apply it. It's a nice excuse to take things slowly, but I do have a couple of paintings lined up for this week. I also started working on a larger scaled painting which is going to be a real beauty once finished. For now I hope you enjoy Dr. Pepper!

I kind of rediscovered the 8" x 8" or 20 x 20 cm size. I like it, because it's still small, but it gives me enough room to get as realistic as I want, especially with the still life paintings. Todays painting shows my beloved theme of glass and Coca Cola.

The Product 2- People On Escalator Ikea

Product 2
G. Boersma
acrylics on masonite
6.7" x 6" or 17 x 15 cm
2010
SOLD

I sometimes use my small daily paintings as studies for my larger works, you know, just to see how it looks or just to try out something. Todays painting is just that, a study for my larger sized piece The Product I did a couple of weeks ago.

Before I started working on the larger sized piece I wanted to practice a little with all those different types of people on the escalator. Besides that I experimented with the composition. I like how you don't really see the escalator here, but after going back and forth I eventually went for a wider shot for my larger sized painting.
