Last friday my oldest brother Frank celebrated his birthday. I thought I'd suprise him with a portrait of his youngest son Lars which I made last week in secret. Dinah, mother of Lars, was in on it, sending me pictures of Lars by email to work from. Needless to say my brother thought it was the best gift ever! I really enjoyed painting Lars, he's such a fun kid, always laughing and looking surprised at everything. He actually looks a bit like me when I was that age.
I'm mainly going to concentrate once more this week on larger sized paintings, but you can expect some smaller ones as well.
kind regards, Gerard

Fanta - still life of fanta glass
I'm enjoying these still life paintings so much that I couldn't resist the temptation to paint another one. This one is the large version of my daily painting Fanta I did a while ago. I was kind of curious how the glass would look larger than life. Not sure if I got all the circles straight, but it looks realistic enough for me.

Impression - woman looking at Monet
In the Getty Center in LA they have a marvelous collection of impressionist paintings. All the big names are there from Degas to Monet, where the lady on my painting is looking at. I'm not sure what the title is of this Monet, but it's the one with the cathedral bathing in light.

Lays - still life of potato chips
For the first time ever I made a larger sized still life! Of course it's not your regular still life, it's one I encountered in my local supermarket while doing my groceries. On the shelf I saw thes bags of potato chips and the colours really spoke to me. It ws kind of tricky to paint the labels of the bags a couple of times, but they do give the painting a nice rhythm so to speak.
In other news yesterday I was interviewed by Friesch Dagblad. They're going to do a rather larger article about me in next week saturdays issue. So not the one of tomorrow, but the week after that. Since it is a Dutch newspaper the article will be only available in Dutch. Today I got my picture taken by their photograph, nice pic of me in front of my work. Have a great weekend!

Macbook
I'm a big fan of Apple computers. I cannot help it, I like the way they look and how they're so easy to use. No wonder that when I was walking on the Santa Monica Promenade I just had to visit the Apple Store there. It was a blessing to actually walk in LA, you hardly can do that anywhere without cars racing down the street, Well anyway, inside the store I saw this man checking out the latest models of the Macbook.

Working on large still life
I'm currently hard at work at my first large sized still life. Usually I make them quite small 6.7" x 6", but the one I'm working on is way larger about 27" x 17". I don't want to give you in progress picture as yet, but I will soon. The painting shows a row of bags of potato chips as seen in my local supermarket. It's going to be a colourful one!
Tomorrow I will post a new daily painting as usual. In the meantime a new auction has just started on ebay. You can check it out here or if you want to see all current auctions you can do so by clicking here

This is not a Magritte
In the Getty Center in Los Angeles I saw this woman admiring the famous painting Treachery of Images by Magritte. Beneath the pipe he wrote Ceci n'est pas une pipe meaing this is not a pipe. Of course the painting shows a pipe, but it's true though. It's not a real pipe, it's an image of a pipe. Well actually, on my painting it's an image of an image of pipe. That's why I entitled the painting 'This is not a Magritte'.

Lunch Break - larger sized version
Today I completed the larger sized version of Lunch Break. It feels really good to concentrate on larger sized work for a change. Of course I make these all the time, but ever since I started my daily blog I have to share my time between small and larger work. So it feels good to fully dedicate myself to a painting more than one day. It gives me peace of mind and I can go all out on adding all these little details, which is quite typical for my style I guess. The painting is situated at the Ernst and Young Plaze in Downtown Los Angeles.

Concentrating on larger paintings this week
I got a couple of shows coming up and I need some more larger sized paintings for them. I therefore decided to leave my dailies for a minute and concentrate on my larger sized work. So no small paintings this week, but I'm guessing that the first larger sized painting will be finished this wednesday. I'll keep you posted!

Atm
I felt like making a really small one today. The subject is quite of present interest with the financial crisis going on and everything. I just thought I painted this scene in front of an ATM machine of Bank of America. Who knows it just might be that this bank is a thing of the past as other banks. Sure hope not.

Reflections - Hooters shopwindow painting
As you might know I'm a member of Daily Painters.com, but you might not know that every first wednesday of a new month we're having a special theme. Being stubborn I usually skip these theme days, but this time I couldn't pass. The theme for march is reflections and I always love to paint things that reflect light some way. Todays painting is my version for the special tomorrow. You see a shopwindow of the Hooters store on Hollywood Boulevard in LA. Again, I was mostly interested in the reflections of course.

Cripple
In LA I saw a lot of homeless people. I'm not sure if the man on my painting is homeless, but he sure has a rough life. I spotted him at the Santa Monica Pier sleeping in his wheelchair right next to a Coca Cola vending machine.
