Lunch Break

I thought I wouldn't make it today, but I did find enough painting time! On the Ernst and Young plaza in downtown LA I saw this young man having a lunch break. The man looked quite lonely to me, but he had his laptop handy. So who knows maybe he was chatting away with online friends.

This morning I went to the doctor to have a little lump removed behind my right ear. As I said yesterday it's nothing serious at all, but I do look a bit like Vincent Van Gogh today!

Sea - Woman looking at painting by Rothko Large

Just like yesterday I got another larger sized painting for you today. If the scene looks famliar, you're right. It's the larger sized version of my daily painting Sea which I made recently. I have made a lot of museum-scenes, but never on a larger scale. I thought the Rothko painting was a good start. Painting larger allows me to add more detail which always makes the paintings more sharper. I defenitely like that.

Tomorrow morning I have to pay my doctor a visit, nothing serious but I'm not sure if I can paint afterwards, I sure do hope so!

kind regards, Gerard

Dirk - painting of muslim women wating for tram in Amsterdam

Today I got a larger sized painting for you. It's the larger sized version of Dirk which I completed a while ago. I really like the contrast between the muslim girls in an obviously western setting. One of the women is wearing a burka, quite easy to paint I might add. I always wonder how a woman with such strong religious beliefs would feel in a western society. I mean all she gets is strange looks wearing a burka, but she must be irritated that everybody else is walking around quite naked through her eyes. Anyway, she's holding a bag by a well known supermarket in the Netherlands called Dirk. It won't get more Dutch than that!

kind regards, Gerard

Break

A man is looking at the painting 'Man with a hoe' by Millet. On the painting you see a man resting on his hoe during a hard day of work. My figure is also resting but something tells me he isn't working that hard like Millets figure.

Battery Charger

Well, I picked up my brush again. I'm left my LA-series for what it is for today and painted this still life of a battery charger, plugged into the wall. Not sure if this is a good one or not, but I don't really care. I made because it really is symbolic for how I'm feeling right now. I miss my girlfriend terribly and need to find a way to recharge my batteries.

New Appartment

If you have been wondering why I didn't post any paintings this week, well, after 2,5 years me and my girlfriend broke up. Right now I'm busy decorating my new appartment. I hope to pick up my brush again next week.

Study

It seems I'm heavy on the 'art within art' paintings this week. That will change soon enough though. On todays painting you see a couple studying a painting by Millais in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Have a great weekend!

Alive - man looking at painting by Gaugain

Arii Matamoe is title of the painting by Paul Gaugain the man is looking at. It shows a decapitated human head. The notion of a human head ritually displayed in an ornate interior suggests the formality of a ruler lying in state. The dark subject manner stems from real events and the artist witnessing a public execution. Gaugain made it during his first stay in Polynesia in the early 1890s and the title is Tahitian for noble sleeping eys i.e death. Luckily my figure isn't dead at all, he's enjoying his life by looking at some great art in the Getty Center in Los Angeles!

Sea - Woman looking at painting by Rothko

I don't got enough painting time these last couple of days! It seems I got caught up with a bunch of other stuff which needed my attention badly. Much of it is not art related, but today I got interviewed by Mercurius television, a local station here in Leeuwarden. They're going to air the item next tuesday.

Anyway, today I did get some painting time, well a whole day actually. It felt great! On todays painting you see a woman looking at a painting by Rothko. I'm not fond on abstract painting at all, but his I like. You really have to see it in person to fully appreciate it. The colours are amazing! It's like a sea surrounding you on all sides. That's why I named the painting Sea. I saw the Rothko painting at the Getty Center in Los Angeles. A great museum up in the hills. You drive up to it by freeway, park your car and take a tram up the hills to the museum. The architecture is great, but the views are even more amazing. If you ever happen to be in LA, make sure you visit this museum!

Coca Cola Bottle Small 2 - Still life of bottles of coke

I know I said I started working on my new series of paintings about LA, but I got a couple of unfinished paintings lying around. I cannot stand that, so today I decided to work again on my small Coca Cola bottles. It's real tricky to paint the logo that small, but I think I nailed it. One of these days I'll paint a larger Coca Cola bottle!

Obama Books

My jetlag is almost gone and I'm slowly getting used to the cold weather again! It sure feels good to be back in the studio painting! Today I started with my my new series of paintings about LA. First up is a still life painting of Barack Obama books.

Of course I saw the inauguration of Barack Obama live on television and thought I have to do something with this. I didn't want to make just another portrait of Obama, but wasn't sure what to paint then. Later on I walked into the bookstore Barnes and Nobles on the Santa Monica Promenade. There I saw this pile of books on Obama and thought that's it! That's what I'm going to paint and here it is!

Back from Los Angeles

I'm back from Los Angeles! My paintings were represented there by Amstel Gallery during the prestiguous LA Art Show.

The LA Art Show was held from january 21 through january 25 for the 14th time. Never before a gallery from the Netherlands was invited to participate. The LA Art Show is an art fair where the absolute top from the artworld gathers. Over 135 galleries from around the world presented work by old masters like Rembrandt, Monet, Picasso, Renoir and Goya, but modern artists like Roy Lichtenstein, Damien Hirst, David Hockney, Jasper Johns and many others were well represented as well.

The fair officially opened with gala which was attended by many Hollywood-stars. Actors from tv-series like E.R. and Oz where there, but moviestars like Geena Davis and Kevin Bacon visited the fair as well. Other moviestars send their representatives to make a selection for them. Curators from major museums also made their appearances. Exact visitor numbers aren't available yet, but the first estimations ran well over 30.000.

In L.A. I had about 26 feet at my disposal to hang 20 of my artworks at the booth of Amstel Gallery. Visitors ranked our booth as one of the best of the fair. Visitors were impressed by my modern subject manner and my highly detailed and realistic form of painting. Besides my own paintings Amstel Gallery also showed photographs by Patricia Steur and works by Belgium artist Ronald Cueppens.

The many impressions I made in Los Angeles will reflect in a new series of paintings. I returned back home not only with a major jetlag and a dislike of cold weather, but also with a lot of pictures for reverance for future paintings. This march Amstel Gallery will show these works alongside older ones. In march my work can also be seen in the United States again. Amstel Gallery will represent me from march 5 - 8 at the Bridge Art Fair in New York during the Armory Art Week. This fair will be held at a stone's throw away from the Armory Show at the same time. For now I'm trying to shake of my jetlag and adjust myself to the extreme cold temperatures here! I will be picking up my brush soon!

kind regards, Gerard Boersma
