Back from Amsterdam

The show in the Amstelchurch has ended and today I went to pick up my paintings in Amsterdam. I spent the most of my time in the train today. The Dutch trains are famous for their delays nowadays and today wasn't any different. I was hoping I could squeeze some painting time in and finish a painting today, but no such luck. Oh well, tomorrow I defenitely finish it. Hold on till then and in the meantime enjoy Max.

Bernice

Todays painting is a commissioned portrait. The painting of the little girl was a birthday present for her mother. The panel is quite small and at first I wasn't completely sure I got a good likeness, but the mother assured me I nailed it. You cannot argue with that!

I always find bookstores very interesting to paint and this scene from a local bookstore was no different. You see a lady squatting down to pick up some books. The painting is part of my show in Amsterdam. It hangs right next to the Tram and The Statue, they make a lovely trio!

The Garbage

While walking through Amsterdam last saturday with the soccer fans all dressed up in orange screaming and shouting for Holland, I saw this man going through the garbage. At first I had to laugh, because I thought he was one of those fans who drank too many beers already. It took me while to realise that he was none of the above. The man works for the city and collects all the garbage produced by millions. Usually his uniform really stands out, but not during a soccer match. A tough job, that's for sure, but very respectable one too. Just imagine what would happen if those guys were on strike for a day or two. What a mess that would be!

The Supporters

The opening of my show in Amsterdam last saturday wasn't a big succes. It was very quiet and if you're wondering why take a look at todays painting. Yes you're right, soccer is to blame! The Europian Championship is going on and Holland had to play against Russia on the same day as the opening. Amsterdam is a crowded city anyway, but things were really crazy saturday. Everybody dressed up in orange, drank beer and forgot all about my show. Oh well, that just happens sometimes. Hate to say Holland lost the game 1-3, but I got a nice motif for todays painting.

The Statue

When I said yesterday that I have a lot of small paintings waiting to be painted in a larger sized version I didn't mean that I don't have other subjects to paint as well. Todays painting 'The Statue' is an example of this. The woman on the painting is looking at a fabulous painting by Renoir in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg. This painting will be part of my show in the Amstelkerk in Amsterdam. The show opens tomorrow at 17:00h and of course you're cordially invited to come!

The Admirers 3

If you have been following my blog lately you know that I'm currently working on larger sized paintings. I got so much smaller paintings which are screaming for a larger sized version and I feel the need to address to that for the time being. The Admirers is one of them. It actually is a commisioned painting by a collector of mine from California. The figures are looking at a painting by Van Gogh in the Van Gogh Musuem in Amsterdam.

The Bridge

I'm glad I told you guys last friday that at this point I'm focussing more on my larger sized paintings and temporarily not have to deal with the pressure of finishing a painting daily, because since this weekend I quit smoking. Things are going well, haven't touched one sigarette since, but at times everything just flashes in front of my eyes and I'm having trouble concentrating. Then I know it's time for one my very tasty nicotine chewing gums, which helps a bit. I hope todays painting and the paintings ahead don't look too shaky. Please forgive me if they do, but I defenitely want to kick my nasty habit to the curb once and for all!

The Walk

Crossing a road can be a dangerous thing. You just might get run over by a bus or like the man on my painting by a yellow cab. But at times you just have to cross the road and take the risk, otherwise you just ain't going anywhere. I for one would be more comfortable riding the cab though.

Summer is here and everybody is enjoying the weather. I noticed things are going a bit slower than usual because of this. I therefore decided to take the opportunity to start working on some larger sized paintings as well. Since I started this blog back in september last year I feel I haven't adressed to that enough and now it's a perfect time to do just that. As you understand larger paintngs take longer to finish, so I won't be posting daily for the time being. Don't worry it is still my aim to post at least 3 paintings a week, including larger and smaller sized paintings.

The Show-Case

A bit similar to yesterdays painting, although today the figures aren't looking at a shopwindow but at a show-case in a museum. The Princessehof museum for ceramics in my hometown to be exact. If you look closely you can see some ceramics through all the refelctions of the window opposite. It almost makes the painting abstract, I love the effects of it.

I told you recently that I've got a show coming up in Amsterdam. Well, that's way sooner than I thought. The grand opening is saturday 21st of june at 17.00 h. The show will feature some great realist artists and is held at the Amstel Church, Amstelveld 10 in Amsterdam. Because this is a special location the exhibition only last for one week, so make sure you don't miss it!

Window Shopping

In 2006 I showed my paintings at Lyppens Diamantairs in the PC Hoofststraat in Amsterdam. This street is widely regarded as the most expensive one in the Netherlands. All the great brands are there, you know Gucci, Versace and many others. My figures are looking at a shopwindow of one of those stores at the PC Hooftstraat. I don't think they bought anything, looking is enough for some.

Marilyn

Todays painting is again inspired by the portraits of Marilyn Monroe by Andy Warhol. I took the liberty to change the background colour from cool whites to warm yellows. I feel those colours work very well, it makes the painting warm, don't you think so?

In other news I got a show coming up in Amsterdam in the Amstel Church. More details follow soon!

Icon

When mister Klemm from New York saw my daily painting The Icon he immediately asked me if I could paint a larger sized version of it. I changed the composition a bit showing more of the great portraits of Marilyn Monroe by Warhol. I'm very satisfied with the results as is mister Klemm and I just wanted to share it with you. The painting now hangs in his office for all to see.

The View

Right opposite of the Kunsthalle I saw this lady enjoying the view. That day a marathon was going on and all the runners were just passing by below. Can you imagine people running 42 kilometres just for fun? That's quite an achievement and I got great respect for that. I tried running myself once after quitting playing soccer. That was not a succes, I immediately thought: 'Why am I doing this again?' So I soon quite sports alltogether and got serious about painting. That's quite an achievement too, isn't it?

Sushi

This could easily be a painting from my Japanese series, but it's not. This Sushi bar is actually situated in Hamburg. I never used to be a big fish eater, but that changed last year. Me and my girlfriend were cooking some meatloaf when suddenly I had it up to here with that grey and greasy stuff. Right there and then we decided to eat more fish. Now I'm used to it and I'm finally enjoying it, especially sushi. I guess I got taste now!

Nude

In the Kunsthalle in Hamburg I visited an exhibition showing the works of Felix Vallotton. I hadn't heard of him before I must admit, but that guy sure can paint! This French painter was closely associated with the Nabis group, which also included artists like Pierre Bonnard and Eduard Vuilard amongst others. In his day and age, late 19th and early 20th century, his painting were thought of as highly provocatve, because of the many nudes and unsettling way of how he painted them. His paintings seem cool and controlled, leaving out details which makes his art so unsettling. I will make a little series of this great painter, starting of with todays painting 'Nude".

Savoy

One of the nicest restaurants in New York has to be Savoy. Located in Soho, the place is well known for its food and warm interior like the fire place, but I decided to paint the exterior. You see a man walking by and another one checking out the menu. The painting is a bit more loose than usual, at times a painting just asks for this approach and I'm very glad I did so!

Hot Dog

Okay, okay I told you that I wouldn't post any real small paintings for a while, but I really couldn't resist the temptation to paint this one. I hope you can forgive me! On the painting you see a man selling hot dogs at night in New York. It's a rough job I guess, but a very honest one too.

In other news I completed working on my book and it's off to the printer. If everything goes as planned I should receive my copy at the end of this week. I'm really looking forward to that! Tomorrow I post a painting of my usual size of 15 x 15 cm, I promise!
