31.5.08The Distance
Late in the evening a man is making a telephone call to his loved ones far away. It's the call you make to hear if everything is alright or when you just want to hear somebody's voice. For some reason there's this distance between you and them, but luckily there's this little machine called a telephone.

30.5.08Change Two
After painting Change last week I thought I tried my hand at a smaller version of it. I'm still having fun experimenting with these smaller sizes. This weekend I will paint a couple of 4" x 4" or 10 x 10 cm, but then I'm returning to my usual size again. I cannot wait to get started!
kind regards, Gerard Boersma
29.5.08Carriage
I woke up kind of sleepy this morning. That's because I had a long day yesterday, I worked untill midnight. Besides painting I'm busy making a book of my blogpaintings. The book has 40 pages and about 50 full colour images. The measurements are 8.3" x 8.3" or 21 x 21 cm complete with hardcover. The book will be published by myself and at first for my own enjoyment. If the results are good I'm thinking about making more. Of course I'm very excited about this and cannot wait to see it!
I'm also very excited about todays painting of a subway carriage. Usually the carriages are loaded with people, but here there's nobody insight. You can feel the presence of humans however and it could be soon before the carriage is loaded with people again. kind regards, Gerard Boersma
28.5.08The Walkman
The man on the painting is taking a tour in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam by wearing a walkman with information of each painting displayed. If never did it myself, but I can imagine them being great fun. The painting he's looking at is by Millais. The panel is again really small, but don't be alarmed: I haven't abandoned the usual size of 15 x 15 cm, I'm just experimenting a bit with sizes here.
kind regards, Gerard Boersma
27.5.08The Lines Two
I'm having so much fun painting these little gems. The panel is only 3.5 x 2.7" or 9 x 7 cm, but it's a real thrill to make as realistic as possible. You really need a steady hand here, especially painting the piece of art on the right. It looks like a Mondriaan, but it is actually a painting by another painter from the Stijl movement called Van Doesburg. The scene is situated at newly build Museum Belvedere for contemporary art in Oranjewoud. The painting was shown at my open studio last weekend.
In other news, my painting The Door from a couple of days back was sold but is now available again. If you're interested just send me an email stating the title. Have a great day! kind regards, Gerard Boersma
26.5.08The Rest
My open studio was great! It's always very exciting for me, but luckily a lot of people showed up and there was never a dull moment. My first guests arrived early in the morning and the last ones left late in the evening, way after official closing time. I'm completely worn out today, but I feel so blessed! Painting can be a lonely profession and I therefore especially appreciate all the feedback from everybody. I got a lot of possitive comments not only on the art, but on the frames as well. I'm defenitely thinking about offering the frames as an additional option for my daily paintings. Thank you so much!
As you can imagine I couldn't find the time to post any new paintings this weekend, but I'm back in my studio now fully motivated and happy to be painting again. Between all the preparations for my open studio last week I managed to make this second version of my larger sized painting The Rest. Although I might not share his religious believes I have great respect for the man on my painting. In the midst of all the noise and liveliness of New York, the man still finds time to sit down to read his book and take a rest. He's waiting for the bus to show up to take him away to a better place. Leaving all the troubles of the city behind him. I for one could take a rest myself, but really painting is my own little escape and that's exaclty what I would do if I had a week off! kind regards, Gerard Boersma

23.5.08The Decency
Tomorrow is my open studio and I'm ready for it! All the art hangs in place, I scrubbed to the floor, filled the refrigerator and did a bunch of other chores as well. A lot of people already said they love to come and I'm looking forward to welcome all my guests. I'm not sure if I can post any new paintings this weekend, we'll see how that goes.
In any case my latest larger sized painting The Decency will be shown tomorrow. It took me about two months to complete it, but I defenitely like the results. My work is often about the indiviualism of todays society and I'm not the only one who noticed this. A lot of people talk about showing more respect to one another. Still I feel that respect is something you have to earn. Therefore I feel that decency and good manners might be something we need even more than respect, because those are things we all can show instantly. It doesn't have to be big things. Opening a door for a lady is big enough for me. As I said The Decency is part of my open studio this weekend. Of course you're cordially invited, but if you're not able to come or just curious, here's a survey complete with my personal comments of all the works shown this weekend: Paintings Open Studio I hope to greet you as a guest! kind regards, Gerard Boersma The Decency G. Just two days to go before my open studio takes place! I'm really looking forward to that. All the pieces are framed and I know exactly where to hang them. There's a lot to see too, no less than 32 paintings! Tomorrow I will post a link to a survey of all of them complete with my personal comments.
Among them is todays painting The Iceberg. In the Kunsthalle in Hamburg hangs this masterpiece of a shipwreck by Casper David Friedrich. The ship itself is covered by the man, but you sure can see the great ice landscape. I just had to paint that! I hope to welcome you as a guest this weekend! kind regards, Gerard Boersma
21.5.08The Tram
In The Hague you got these nice trams with red and some kind of light brownish yellow which I love to paint. Near central station I saw this man waiting for his tram to show up. The one right in front of him isn't his, or if it is he better hurry and get in. The scene reminds me of my museum paintings, because of the abstract background and the window. Tomorrow the preview continues!
kind regards, Gerard Boersma

20.5.08Art Books
The great thing about making daily paintings is not only that it makes one a better painter, but one can try and experiment too. At times a small painting just stares back at you and says: 'Please make a larger sized version of me!' Well, one cannot argue with that.
The Art Books is just one of those paintings and I made it exclusively for my open studio this weekend. On the painting you see a man in a bookstore picking up some books about art. You can see Dali with his strange mustache looking quite fierce back at us. I wonder what my girlfriend would say if I came home with a mustache like that. I don't think I want to know that. kind regards, Gerard Boersma

19.5.08The Door
The Door is a painting I hung on to for quite some time now. I painted it in 2006 and just couldn't let it go. I finally thought my open studio would be great opportunity to show it to you all. For me a door is somewhat like the future. You have to go through it, before you know what lies beneath. We can only guess what that is. The painting is situated in my old studio, so besides the future, it represents my past now too.
The Door is one of my exclusive paintings I will show at my open studio 24th and 25th of may. This week I will give you a preview of most of them, but of course you're cordially invited to my brand new studio! kind regards, Gerard Boersma
18.5.08The Admirers Two
Like yesterdays painting today I tried my hand again on a smaller sized version. This time it's a second version of my blogpainting The Admirers. It's a real thrill to paint something that small and still make it work. The figures are looking at a painting by Van Gogh in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. The preview continues tomorrow!
kind regards, Gerard Boersma
17.5.08The Observers Two
If this scene looks familiar to you, you're right. The painting is a second version of my blogpainting The Observers, 15 x 15 cm. Usually when I make another version I choose to make it larger, but in this case I wanted to see if I could pull it off on a smaller size. I think it works quite well. The scene is siutated at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and although the painting is mostly covered the couple is looking at the Milkmaid by Vermeer.
Observers Two will be shown at my open studio next weekend. Tomorrow I will continue the preview! kind regards, Gerard Boersma
16.5.08Big Fish
If you have been following my blog lately you probably know I'm having my open studio in the weekend of 24th and 25th of may. I will show my latest paintings and some exclusives which I painted especially for this event. Starting from now I will give you a preview of these paintings and post them this week untill the big event.
First up is Big Fish. I'm keeping it in the family with this one, because the man is looking at a painting of my relative Gerrit Wijngaarden in Gallery Zofier. I entitled the painting after the statues of the big fishes, but of course the real big fish is the painting by Gerrit! kind regards, Gerard Boersma
15.5.08One Way
Recently I heard somebody say or read somewhere that two wrongs don't make a right, but 3 left turns do. My sign already shows the right way, but as it says it's only one way. There just might be others!

14.5.08Change
I just love painting these night scenes, they're so much fun to do. The lighting gets me everytime. Why I entitled this piece Change I totally leave that to your imagination this time.
Besides painting I'm preparing for my open studio on may 24th and 25th. Everything goes as planned, but I still got some work to do. As a matter of fact I get right on it now, have a nice evening! kind regards, Gerard Boersma

13.5.08The Tram Ride
Today I painted this scene of a tram in Amsterdam. The woman is surrounded by all this glass and steel. I remember sitting at the other end of it and I thought it was a very strange place to be in. I just had to paint it!

It was a hard day at the studio, the heat is just not going away. It's sweaty and I decided to work tropical hours, early start and early finish if possible. Still it was a good day for painting. I worked on this scene from the Hamburger Kunsthalle. A woman is looking at a painting which we cannot see, the one we do see is I believe by impressionist Corot, although the image is hardly recognizable. In this case I wasn't really interested in the art displayed, but more in the act of observing and the whole scenery. I especially liked the stairs.
In other news, I'm framing artwork for my upcoming open studio. The small paintings even look better when framed, I'm defenitely satisfied with that. I'm thinking about offering the frames as an option for my blog paintings. This week I'm also putting some never before seen larger sized paintings online as well. These paintings will be shown at my open studio on 24th and 25th of may. A survey of all the paintings for my little exhibition will be online just before my open studio. Of course I let you when exactly! kind regards, Gerard Boersma

11.5.08Japanese Clothes
A bit later than usual, that's because I went out to dinner with my girlfriend and a good friend of ours. I had a splendid evening and even enjoyed some sunshine today, gotta work on my taint you see. My face is all red now, I think I'll drink another one just to cool down. Anyway, todays painting is situated in a Japanese clothing store. I liked the odd perspective and of course the hip clothes they wear in Japan.

It's sooo hot here, my paint is almost dry before I can put it on my panel. It's kind of difficult to paint with this weather, but I still managed to make this scene from the Hamburger Kunsthalle. The lady is taken a close look at some famous portraits of Marilyn Monroe by Andy Warhol.
kind regards, Gerard Boersma
9.5.08The Wanderers
One of the nicest paintings in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg is 'Wanderer above a sea of fog' by Casper David Friedrich. This painter is one of the icons of the German Romantic movement and best known for his allegorical landscapes. His works are often symbolic and convey the spiritual experiences of life. My wanderers seem to enjoy the landscape just as much a I did!
kind regards, Gerard Boersma
8.5.08Make Up
In the Karstadt warehouse in Hamburg I saw these two girls looking to buy some new make up. Or at least they were trying everything out from the lipsticks to the mascara. As you can imagine it took them quite some time. Nowadays beauty doesn't come easy, it's plain hard work!

7.5.08The Bridge
Like I said yesterday, I really enjoyed my visit to the Kunsthalle in Hamburg. In this great museum there hangs this painting called 'Girls on a Bridge' by Edward Munch which I really love. For me Munch is the painter of human emotion, there's hardly any painter who can top him at that. He didn't lead an easy life, it was full of deaths and that shows in his paintings. On mine the figure is somewhat reminiscent of Munch, that's one of the reasons I called it The Bridge.

6.5.08Elevator
I'm back from my short spring break to Hamburg and happy to be painting again! I had a great time in Hamburg, especially loved the museum Kunsthalle. You can expect a little series about this German city soon. From now on it's business as usual with a painting a day.
On saturday the 24th and sunday 25th of may my new studio will be open all day for all to see. On display are my latest paintings and some exclusives which I painted especially for this event. You're cordially invited to come! For those who aren't able to pay me a visit, I make sure you can see a preview of the exhibition online beforehand. More info follows soon! kind regards, Gerard Boersma
