The Subway

Thank you all for all your nice comments on the cover of the Leeuwarder Courant! As promised here's todays painting!

While I was in New York for my show in Soho I often took the subway to get around town. While waiting for my own train I saw this scene right in front of me. The train is about to close its doors and is almost ready to leave. People are getting aboard in the nick of time and as always the train is crowded. It always intriques me when people are put together in places with other people they don’t know. I often wonder what they're thinking of, especially the Asian woman in the middle.

Due to the holidays this is the only painting I'm putting online this week. I'll be back next week. Merry Christmas and a happy newyear!

kind regards, Gerard Boersma

The Exeption - Cover Christmas Special Leeuwarder Courant

It's here! My painting 'The Exception' is printed on the cover of the Christmas Special of the Leeuwarder Courant. It feels really good to see my painting printed in that many copies (about 100.000) and I'm very happy about the results!

As I mentioned earlier the theme for the Christmas Special is 'exception' and so is my painting. On my painting you can see an old lady in front of a cash-machine at night. You hardly see any women alone on the streets in Holland at night, let alone an old lady. She doesn’t feel threatened in any way though, she feels safe enough to even use the cash-machine. A device the elderly usually love to avoid. As you can see, she’s a real exception in many ways!

The original painting is available for purhase, but giclées are available too. Those are high quality reproductions on paper made with the computer. Once finished one can hardly tell the difference between the original and the giclées. The giclées are signed and numbered and are available in a limited edition of just 100 for only 50,- euro each. The giclées come with a certificate of authenticity and are the same size as the original painting, 60 x 45 cm or 23,6 x 17.7”. You can order your giclée directly from the Leeuwarder Courant by writing to: Redactiesecretariaat Leeuwarder Courant, Sixmastraat 15, Postbus 394 , 8901 BD, Leeuwarden. By phone 0031 (0) 58 2845655 or by email redactiesecretariaat@leeuwardercourant.nl or just send me an email. I would be happy to forward your order for you.

Due to the holidays I'm only able to publish one new painting this week, but the painting will be a bit larger in size and I promise you it's going to be a good one as you can see for yourself tomorrow!

Merry Christmas and a happy newyear!

kind regards, Gerard Boersma

The Chase Two

I finally acted upon the advice of my familymembers and very talented painters Grietje Huisman en Gerrit Wijngaarden. They sometimes tell me that a couple of my paintings could be stronger if I didn't paint every detail, but just a small piece of it. Usually I brush aside their advice quite nonchalantly, but when I took a second look at my painting ' The Chase' I thought: 'My family just might have a point here.' So I took heed to their wise words and I'm very satisfied with the results. I might just take another look at other paintings as well!

I told you guys yesterday that the Christmas Special of the Leeuwarder Courant with my painting The Exception on the cover will be available this saturday, but I just heard that it will be published on monday dec 24th. We have to wait a little bit longer!

Merry Christmas and a happy newyear!

Update cover Leeuwarder Courant

I just got back from signing and numbering all the giclées of my painting ‘The Exception’. It was a real thrill to see them! For those who have never heard of a giclée, it’s a high quality reproduction made from the original painting and in this case printed on paper. One can hardly tell the difference between my orignal painting and the giclées. Art Revisited did an excellent job!

This saturday the Leeuwarder Courant will publish their Christmas Special with ‘The Exception’ on the cover. Inside there’s an article about me as well. As the Leeuwarder Courant has the right to publish the painting first, it’s still a secret how the paintings looks. Of course I will put it online as soon as I can!

The giclées will be available from this saturday on in a limited edition of just 100 for only 50,- euro each. The giclées come with a certificate of authenticity and are the same size as the original painting, 60 x 45 cm or 23,6 x 17.7”. The original painting is also still available for purchase. You can order the giclée directly from the Leeuwarder Courant or just send me an email. I would be happy to forward your order for you.

The Bonifatius Church

I already painted The Oldehove and The Avero Tower, but I couldn't resist the temptation to paint our other landmark The Bonifatius Church as well. The church was build around 1884 and is dedicated to Saint Bonifatius, as you probably guessed already. It's one of the highlights in the career of architect Cuypers, who also designed the Rijksmuseum and the Central Station, both in Amsterdam.

Tomorrow afternoon I will sign and number the giclées of my painting 'The Exception', which I made for the cover of the Christmas Special of the Leeuwarder Courant! Cannot wait to see how they look!

The Choice

I enjoy drinking a cold beer after some hard work, especially the heavier ones. Last week I ran fresh out of my special beers and I went to the supermarket to pick up a new sixpack. Standing in front of all these different types of beer I couldn’t make up my mind which one to pick. Life is full with choices, some are hard and some are easy. This one was defenitely a hard one and it inspired me to make this painting.

The Chase

When I was in New York for my exhibition in Soho I saw this man standing at a cash-machine. I often feel that money rules everything around us and I thought this was an beautiful motif to express that. I couldn't help but smiling when I read the name of the bank: 'The Chase'. It's all in the name as they say!

The auction only lasts for 10 days and you can expect the painting within a week to 10 days after the auction ends. Bidding starts at only one dollar. You will receive the painting safely packaged and ready to frame or simply displayed on a small easel. During my visit to The Hague I saw this man waiting at the tram-stop near central station. Obviously the tram right in front of him wasn't the one he was waiting for, but I saw him looking at the man inside. As long as it has a good grove in it I'm enjoying it, especially when it's pressed on those big black cd's. When I was invited by Anker & Anker to show my paintings at our municipal theatre De Harmonie earlier this year, I packed my paintings and jumped on my bike to bring them over. While riding my bike carrying 10 larger sized paintings across Leeuwarden I suddenly remembered I have a driver liscense nowadays. Anyway, on my way over I saw this empty snackbar near our municipal theatre. I stopped and thought: 'I have to paint this someday!' Well I finally did. I just love the whole atmosfere of the painting. There's nobody there, but it still seems there's something about to go down.

The Telephone

Almost everybody has a mobile phone nowadays, but this painting could only work with a public phone. Luckily those are still around too. I wanted to create a painting full of suspense and I think I did a good job here. It looks like the phone could ring any minute from now and you’re just happen to be around to pick it up and answer the call.

Last week I finished painting the commission by the Leeuwarder Courant for their Christmas Special. The people at the largest newspaper in my region were excited about ‘The Exception‘ as the painting is titled. Unfortunately you guys have to wait to see it due the publicist rights. High quality reproductions, giclées as they call it, of this painting will be available soon in a limited edition of just 100. Today me and reporter Sietse Singelsma went to Art Revisited, the company which will make these giclées. We had the grand tour around the company and it was really interesting to find out how giclées are made. I would like to thank everybody at Art Revisited and I cannot wait to see the giclée of my own painting!

The Highway (Going Home)

Me and a friend recently visited a close friend of ours. The weather was bad. It had been raining all day and it still did when we decided to head back to our city. Although I had a good time at my friends house I was feeling kind of tired and I couldn't wait to get home. I guess it was the wetter. When we stopped at a traffic-light I saw this view which expressed exactly how I felt at the time and right there and then I decided to paint it.

I also got my hand on some pictures of the opening last sunday, you can see those here.

Just like my other blog painting The Traffic-Light this painting is situated in New York. It has the same meaning too, but I decided to paint another one at night. The lighting and atmosphere make the scene more dramatic and I simply love it.

I enjoyed the opening at Galerie Help U Zelven in Winterswijk yesterday. I like to thank everybody who showed up, it was nice talking to all of you! The responses where great and I'm convinced that we put a great show together that's really worth seeing. You can do so untill jan 19 2008. I'm hoping to get my hands on some pictures soon!

I'm currently working on the commission by the Leeuwarder Courant for their Christmas Special which I mentioned earlier. I recently became an uncle again! My brother Frank and his girlfriend Dinah are the proud parents of a beautiful baby boy called Lars.

I was in a toy-shop looking to buy a present for my new born nephew when I saw this gun. I couldn't believe how real it looked. I remember saying to myself: 'Do we really want our children to play with guns?' The Children

I'm back from my vacation in Valencia, Spain! Me and my girlfriend Esther enjoyed all the good stuff the city has to offer. I especially liked the Spanish cuisine and the city of art and science. This masterpiece of architecture by Valencians own Calatrava are a must see when you visit the city! Ah well, it's back to painting again.

The Children started out as a study for a larger sized painting, but I liked it so much that I decided to finish it. It reminded me of my own childhood when nothing was more important than a couple of blocks with wheels on it. As you grow older you get all these responsibilities and things aren't always that easy. The painting shows it can be that simple at times.

Yes I know I told all of you that I wouldn't post any new paintings this week due to my vacation, but I had some time left and I just couldn't help myself.

I always wanted to make a painting of somebody looking at art, I finally did so. The painting expresses my love for art and of course the rose is a symbol for this. The lovely lady is looking at a painting by Piet Hein van Asperen, a not so well known Frisian painter but a very good one. I had a great time painting this one and I think I'll make a larger sized painting of it as well.

Tomorrow I'm going on vacation to Valencia Spain which I'm really looking forward to. I'll be back next week!

Oddment - The Oldehove

Pisa isn't the only town with a crooked tower, my hometown Leeuwarden has one too! It's called the Oldehove and stands about 40 m. tall and about 1.69 m. crooked. Construction started in 1529 but was soon abanded when the tower started to sink in the ground. The people of Leeuwarden were left behind with an unfinished tower.

As a painter from Leeuwarden you just have to paint our landmark at least once. I decided to go for a night scene. The little building on the left is one of the entrances of the newly build car park beneath the ground.

Next week I won't be able to post any new paintings. I'm going on vacation to Valencia, Spain for a couple of days! I'll be back in business on november 19.

The Leeuwarder Courant has asked me to paint the cover for their annual christmas special! For those who have never heard of the Leeuwarder Courant, it's the largest newspaper in my region with more than 100.000 readers. As you can imagine I'm very honored that they have asked me.

The theme for their christmas special will be 'Exception' and it's also the theme for my painting. Other than that I'm totally free to paint what I like. As an exception (pun intended..) the Leeuwarder Courant also offers a limited number of giclées of the painting. This is a very high quality fine art print, in this case on paper. Our society is aimed at youth I often feel that old folks don't really count in our society. To symbolize this I painted them next to a trash-can, the place where you put stuff you don't longer need. For me the elderly are also a container, not of trash but of wisdom, knowledge or at least life experience. And that's something we youngsters could use, isn't it? That's why I called the painting The Containers, there's more than one of it on the painting.

Anker was impressed by it and invited me to show my works during a large congress for lawyers of which I'm very thankful. The congress will take place tomorrow at the municipal theatre Harmonie in Leeuwarden. A lot of lawyers will come to this event and it's a great oppurtunity to introduce my works of art to them. Ten of my larger sized works will be shown there for only one day. The congress is a private one and not open to the public. I saw this tram leaving during my visit to The Hague. The tram was crowded and people were jumping aboard in the nick of time. It always intriques me when people are put together in places with other people they don’t know. All these people have a different background and their own story to tell. I wonder if they took the time out to get to know one another a little bit during the ride. Next time I will jump aboard too and find out!

Oddment - The Trashcan

I recently got out of the train and I was walking towards the exit of the train station of my hometown when something shining caught my eye. When I took a good look I saw it was this trashcan. The Netherlands is famous for it’s designs and the trash-can isn’t the exception to the rule. While I stood there observing the garbage can it suddenly reminded me of keeping up appearances. The trashcan may be shining on the outside, inside it’s nothing but trash. You wouldn’t know that when you only see the outside.

The Security

In addition to my blog paintings I decided to put one of my larger paintings up for auction. The painting is called The Security and is approximately 37" x 27" (93,3 x 70 cm.) in size.

The painting is situated at Wallstreet, New York. I painted it in 2006 just after my second show in the Big Apple. A man is trying to buy something at a kiosk, but there seems to be no assistant in sight. This just might be why the policeman is watching him closely. Perhaps the man is about to do something wrong!

Tomorrow another daily painting!

The New Religion

During my visit to Amsterdam I took the escalator in the Magna Plaze Mall. While looking down I saw this lady admiring a red dress in a shop-window. The dummy is bathing in light and the whole scene reminded me of statues you see in churches. Perhaps the woman is even saying prayer to get her husband buying her that dress, finally!

Oddment - The Door

Although I made it myself, this painting intriques me. I wish I could walk through that door and see what's behind it. For me the door symbolizes the path I take. You'll never know what's next and what you might find after you open one door. Sometimes you get a glimpse in advance and here the future looks mighty bright!

The Shopping Mall

Although I like to look good, I'm not particular fond of shopping. Recently I had to get me some new cloths though and I was wandering through a shopping mall. I was upstairs and saw this lady searching for cloths when I looked down. I don't know if she bought any, I know I got some nice new shirts when I got back home and this great idea for a painting which you are now viewing.

If you would like to have this blog painting just click on the link beneath the painting to place your bid. The auction only lasts for 10 days and you can expect the painting within a week to 10 days after the auction ends. Bidding starts at only one dollar. I'm hoping you enjoy this painting and my other paintings as well!

Upcoming shows

Two shows have just ended last week but two more are already on their way! In the first week of november I will show my latest pieces at a special exhibition in the Posthoorn Church near the Central Station in Amsterdam. This exhibition will only last for one week and is organised by Master Art Consultancy from Amsterdam They often organise shows at special locations and this one is going to be good!

Last summer Galerie Help U Zelven from Winterswijk asked me to design a table-cloth together with Louise Cohen. After some hard work we finally got the design together and it's looking pretty good. The table-cloth is made in the Dutch Textile Museum and will be shown in november and december at Galerie Help U Zelven. It will be available in 5 different colors with matching napkins. Besides the table-cloth Louise will show her latest designs and I will show my paintings.

Exact dates and more information about the shows to be announced. Tonight I will post a new daily painting!

The Office

I always find great motifs to paint while I knockabout the streets of my hometown at night. This time I noticed this office. Although the lights were still shining, there's not a soul in sight. All the employees have left the office and are enjoying their hard earned night off. Still it seems something could happen any minute from now and the place is bursting with activity once more.

The Platform

I just recently got my driving license, but I still find myself riding the train quite often. Old habits are hard to kill I guess. One night I arrived in my hometown very late. This was after the grand opening of my show at ICO, centre for art and culture in Assen. It took me almost 3 hours to get home and I was feeling kind of tired and sleepy, but at the same I was pleased about how the show went. I finally stepped out, looked back and saw this beautiful view of the train I was just in. Right there and then I decided to paint it and I'm pretty satisfied about the results!

Oddment - The Arrow

I’ve got something special for you today! ‘The Arrow’ is my second oddment for this blog and unlike ‘The Avero Tower’ this one doesn’t differ in subject manner but in size. The painting is exactly the size as you see it here, 9,7 x 7,4 cm (3.8” x 2.9”). It’s a real thrill to paint something that small and I love how the arrow points to something we cannot see. This and the lighting give the painting a special atmosphere, don’t you think?

Yesterday the Leeuwarder Courant ran a large article on me and my blog, which I will post soon. I have to translate it you know. I also want to thank everybody who are bidding on my recent paintings. It’s greatly appreciated!

The Magazines

I love to read and it comes to no surpise that you might find me in a bookstore somewhere. I recenlty saw this lady looking at some magazines. I really love the lighting in this one. It gives the painting this magical atmospere which is emphasized by the fact that we don't know what she's reading.

The painting is ready to go, so you can expect it within a week to 10 days after the auction ends. Bidding starts at only one dollar. You will receive the painting safely packaged and ready to frame or simply displayed on a small easel. Please be reminded that the colors may slightly vary due to a digitalcamera's results and depending on your monitor.

I hope you enjoy this painting and the paintings ahead. If you wish to be informed about all my paintings, you can subscribe to my blog. Each painting's entry includes a direct link to the auctions. Bidding on my first blog painting 'The Tram-Stop'ends this sunday!

Oddment - The Avero Tower

I love to take a walk at night after a hard day of work.
On one of my walks I saw this big giant rising up against
the skyline in my hometown Leeuwarden. Of course I saw
the Avero Tower before, you have to be blind not to see it.
In fact on a clear day the whole province can actually see it,
but I never saw it in this light. I'm usually not a landscape
painter, but this view I couldn't resist. I just love the
lights and the reflections in the water. For people who have
been to my hometown, the view is taking from across the park
Prinsentuin near the statue of Us Mem. It's the first oddment
painting on this blog and I hope you enjoy it as much as I
did painting it. Have a nice weekend!

I'm finally in business! The Tram-Stop is the first painting for this blog. The painting shows the tram-stop in front of the central station in The Hague (Den Haag), Netherlands. The painting is ready to go, so you can expect it within a week to 10 days after the auction ends. Bidding starts at only one dollar. You will receive the painting safely packaged and ready to frame or simply displayed on a small easel. The results of my special birthday action!

After a nerve wrecking month I finally announce the winners of my special birthday action! Before I do I want to thank everybody for their many kind, creative and personal motivations. The response was way beyond expectation!

One person wrote to me that it was the most beautiful ass ever. Somebody else wrote never to want to own a VW and especially one that rides on gasoline. Others wanted to trade me their reproduction of the ‘Gipsygirl with tear’.

As you can imagine, I’ve had a hard time picking just one winner. Therefore I decided to pick two! Of course there’s only one painiting ‘The Shell’, for the other winner I decided to make a customized painting!

Winner ‘The Shell’, Hans Knulst from Apeldoorn

Hans wrote a beautiful motivation. He analyses the painting and let his imagination run freely. His motivation was an eyecatcher and the most complete of all. Our expertise jury, me myself and I, called it analysing, personal and extremely creative. For example Hans wrote about the air of damping gasoline and his deepest refelections of his soul saw the light by telling me his thoughts after a long ride. Hans motivation was quite accurate and is the only right winner of The Shell!

Winner ‘Customize painting’, Maaike van Gils

Maaike had very personal reasons to win my painting and asked me not to publicize those. To give you a tip of the iceberg, she has been through a lot lately, both pleasant and unpleasant. She wrote:’When have you time to think about this stuff. When driving!’ Her story really spoke to me and I’m looking forward making a customized painting for her!

Winners cd Duke and Gonzo - Gritty

The illustruous hiphop duo Duke and Gonzo have only just released their debutalbum Gritty and allready their receiving good critics! I painted the cover for this album and I was able to give 3 of them away!

The first winner is Janco Graafsma, age 17. My painting reminded him of last summer when he was vacationing with his friends abroad for the first time without his parents.

The second winner is Froukje Zijlstra, Amsterdam. Froukje always want to fill her tank at a nice rounded figure. Unfortnately this never happens as we all know. She has a hard time explaining at the check out that she fails short a couple of dimes. How recognizable!

The third winner is Hetty Schuil. She wrote a moving motivation about her blank walls. Unfortunately this still is the case, but her room is now filled with beautiful music!

more info about Duke and Gonzo can be found here:
duke and gonzo

I still want to win something!

As I said above, the responses were way beyond expectations, but I’m a bit saddened by letting so many of you down. To give everybody a second chance I decided to give a couple of my paintings up for auction every week! On my blog paintings will appear regarly on which you can place your bid. No motivation neccessary this time, just bidding, because from time to time I like to eat too. The first one will be called ‘The Tram-Stop’ and will be available next week!

Painting The Shell won by Hans Knulst

Uitslag wedstrijd ‘De Shell’

Winnaars Duke and Gonzo - Gritty

Heel herkenbaar!

De derde winnaar is Hetty Schuil. Zij schreef een ontroerende motivatie over haar lege muren. Dit blijft helaas nog even zo, maar de kamer wordt nu wel gevuld met prachtige muziek!

duke and gonzo

Gerard Boersma
